December 29, 2010 - EB meeting commemorating the birth of Theodore Herzl

JC Zemun Executive Board meeting honoring the 150th anniversary of the birth of Theodore Herzl was an appropriate formal occasion to round off this year’s successful community work. JC Zemun commemorated this important date with the screening of a documentary film made on the occasion on the centenary birthday anniversary of the “Father” of the modern Israel state, from the archive of Steven Spielberg. Prior to the commemoration the meeting agenda dealt with the report on the finalization of the “Righteous among Nations – Serbia” book publication project, future allocation of Federation budget funds and JCZ planned projects for 2011. All points were discussed and approved.
Acting on behalf of newsreel “Filmske Novosti”, Federation President Aleksandar Nećak handed over to the Community a film showing the presentation of the Righteous book held in the Memorial museum 21st October in Šumarice on December 16th  Mr. Nenad Fogel chose to screen the film segment of the exceptionally striking speech Federation President, Mr. Nećak delivered on this occasion.

December 16, 2010 -  Šumarice for the Righteous

On December 16th, inst., the book “Righteous among the Nations – Serbia” was presented in the Memorial Museum “21st October” in Šumarice. The Šumarice Memorial Museum, an indisputable symbol of the calamity that befell the citizens of Serbia during World War Two, was host to book: co-authors, historians Dr Milan Ristović and Dr Milan Koljanin, the Jewish Communities in Serbia Federation president, Mr. Aleksandar Nećak and JC Zemun president, Mr. Nenad Fogel. Special guest at the promotion was drama actor Mr. Goran Sultanović. The book is dedicated to the citizens of Serbia, the unarmed heroes, who as the writer of life-stories Mr. Milan Fogel puts, under threat of death during World War Two, saved Jews, more often than not, completely unknown to them. To allow better understanding of the courage of the Righteous the book section written by Prof. Dr. Milan Ristović, speaks of the historical conditions under which rescue operations were undertaken in the territory of Serbia. In his section historian Dr. Milan Koljanin gives a comprehensive outlook of the conditions Jews lived in inside Serbia and the state of Yugoslavia up to 1941. The book is also dedicated to the destiny of the Jewish population persecuted in Serbia during World War Two and their bare survival. The first months of the war saw the incarceration of Jews in the Topovske šupe camp. Once inside the camp Jews became an “undying” source for hostage executions in reprisal operations carried out by the Nazis. The mass execution of hostages by firing squad that took place in Kragujevac on October 21, 1941 established that Serbs were not exempted from oppressive hostilities undertaken by the German occupation administration. The number of killed hostages, 2794, clearly shows how the occupation authorities victimized Serbs and Jews alike. The horrific destiny that bonds the two peoples was once again proven when at the close of the promotion the Head of the Kragujevac Museum invited us to be their guests in Kragujevac next spring. Apparently book presentations undertaken by the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia, JC Zemun, as well as, book authors, can be ”read” as groundwork for a lasting memorial to the good people of Serbia.

December 8, 2010 - Hanukkah in Belgrade - a political history lesson

Distinguished guests in the SynagogueThe eight day of Hanukkah was celebrated in the presence of the President of Serbia, Mr. Boris Tadić, the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Hon. Irinej, and the Minister of Religion, Mr. Bogoljub Šijaković, as well as many dignitaries of religious communities and the Corps Diplomatic.

President of JCZ meeting PatriarchPresident Tadic lighting the first candleThe President of the Jewish Community in Belgrade, Mr. Jovan Elazar, welcomed the guest in chosen words and in his brief speech informed them of the origin and meaning of Hanukkah celebrations.  He then called on Serbia’s President, Mr. Tadić to light the first of the eight candles. The remaining candles were lit by the above mentioned notables. Just as the gathered guests believing that the official program was over, began to mingle, Rabbi Isak Asiel addressed the gathering with his recollections of a visit paid to NATO Headquarters in Brussels some ten years ago. All this talk was actually an introduction to a political cum historical lecture on the origin of Hanukkah holiday and a slight intimation how Jews were the only ones who 2200 years ago believed in the one God. At the end of a brief speech (25 minutes) he pointed out that today all major religions also observe one God. The remark was most probably made to point to the spiritual bonding of Jews with other confessions, which, in any case, soon became apparent at the reception held after the performance of JC Belgrade Choir.

December 8. 2010. - The Ministry of Religion continues to support JC Zemun

Minister of religion Sijakovic with our presidentSigning the agreementOn Wednesday, December 8, JCZ President, Mr. Nenad Fogel signed an agreement on continued Ministry’s financial support for Zemun Jewish Community website. From day one of the site’s existence, back in 2005, the Ministry has provided backing for its activity. One important task the Ministry has set as an objective, and which the Jewish Community in Zemun wholeheartedly upholds by way of its site activity, is:” perpetuating the development of religious cultures, liberties and creed tolerance as features of European integrations and the cornerstone on which the system of values of the European Union rests.” The Ministry’s explicit regard for our contribution to this cause has further enticed it to accept our request for Ministry funding of the Serbian-Jewish singing society “Da se ne zaboravi” (Cherishing the Memory) project implementation. This donation is extended from the Ministry of Religion project: “Advancement of religious culture, liberties and tolerance”. The said project is a part of the 2010 Program “Attaining cooperation among faiths and religious communities.”

December 6, 2010 - Hanukkah in Subotica

The Jewish Community in Subotica remains faithful to its traditional gatherings of regional Jewish Communities. Beside all communities from Serbia, except for JC Belgrade, Novi Sad and Niš, present at this year’s Subotica social event were our dear friends from Osijek and Hódmezővásárhelyen. First to address the guests was Ambassador of Israel to Serbia H.E. Arthur Koll, who recounted the story of Hanukkah and the Hellenic occupation. He further stressed the fact how, first on the scene, and engaged in combating the great fire in the north of Israel were Greek firefighters! Federation President Mr. Aleksandar Nećak expressed his gratitude to JC Subotica for its long-standing effort to bringing together all Communities from the territory of former Yugoslavia as well as from neighbouring countries: Hungary and Romania. He pointed out how their activities in re-establishing and upholding the Jewish faith were remarkable and deserved special acknowledgment by the Federation. In his speech Mayor of Subotica, Mr. Slavko Parać spoke of the ample contribution of Jews in the structuring and development of city Subotica. The star of the evening was unquestionably the famous Israeli musician Boaz Davidof who held a memorable concert completely adapted to Hanukkah celebrations. The most interesting part of the concert was the spontaneous performance of Belgrade opera diva, Ana Rupčić. Calling to the audience to join in and sing with him, Mr. Davidof eventually came upon Ms. Rupčić. Her voice and musical expression brought fresh beauty to the song. At the end of the concert Ms. Ana Rupčić sang the famous song of Napoli, “O sole mio”. This report would certainly be incomplete if the enormous effort of the Women’s Section of JC Subotica, led by Ms. Ružica Hauzer, was not mentioned. The star of the Hanukkah gastronomic spread, for which one can only have words of praise, was the traditional stew.

December 5, 2010 - Hanukkah - Chabad Serbia

The celebration of the fifth day of Hanukkah, dubbed “Hanukkah Bowling”, was organized by Chabad Serbia. The event was held at the Koloseum centre in Zemun. Children took pleasure in painting the Hanukkie, while adults spent time in bowling and conversation. Rabbi Yehoshua Kaminetzky opened the ceremony of the lighting of candles with a prayer for Israel. After a brief introductory speech he asked Federation President, Mr. Aleksandar Nećak to light the candles. All present joined in the singing of joyful Hanukkah songs. Of course, the event could not pass without the traditional doughnuts and latkes.

December 4, 2010 - The traditional Christmas Bazaar

For the third year running the Jewish Community lent its support to the above IWC (International Women’s Club) humanitarian activity. What marked this year’s Christmas Bazaar were its abounding cultural-entertaining displays and the opportunity to taste gastronomic specialties from all over the world. However, the Bazaar’s greatest quality is its charitable character – the entire sales proceeds, as well as, those from tickets bought go to various aid organizations.
The greatest interest shown was for the Israeli, Dutch, Indonesian and Japanese exhibition stands. Once again, Dead Sea cosmetics were the most sought out merchandise at the Israeli stand. The humanitarian sale was also assisted by the Ambassador of Israel to Belgrade, H. E. Arthur Col. Federation President Mr. Aleksandar Nećak and wife Matilda wished the Ambassador all the best in his humanitarian effort. We noted that the Ambassador also backed the event as a customer at the neighbouring Japanese stand.

The exceptional organization team, knowingly led by coordinator Dina Schosberger, must be credited for the outstanding atmosphere of, the fourth in row, Limmud Keshet as well as the enjoyment felt by its 370 participants. The host of the conference was the Jewish Community in Zagreb. Rendering pleasure to both “body and soul”, the copious program of the conference left no one dissatisfied. The occasion offered a multitude of events and activities: theatre shows, lectures, spiritual guidance, dancing workshops, sport events and recreation, miscellaneous workshops, concerts… Special complements go to the concept of the program envisaged for youngsters. Within the scope of the conference program a meeting of all presidents of Jewish communities from the territories of former Yugoslavia was organized. Beside the presidents of Osijek, Slavonski Brod, Virovitica, Split, Skopje, Prizren, Sarajevo, Rijeka, Zagreb and guests from Bulgaria, present at the gathering were also presidents of Jewish communities from Serbia (except JC Niš president). Staying in Bjelolasica for only a couple of hours the presidents of JC Beograd and Novi Sad arrived especially for that event in order to render their contribution to the meeting. Although they did not address the gathering the mere presence of the presidents of the two largest communities in Serbia was a sign of support to the Mishpacha project. A survey of results achieved a propos previous agreements and concepts of joint future activity constituted the basic themes of this meeting. We hope that the pervading positive energy of the Limmud Keshet will pass on to all who hold decision-making positions as regards future cooperation of our communities.

Nenad Fogel, President of JC Zemun
Zemun, November 22, 2010

November 10, 2010 - Deputy Minister of Religions receives the President of JCZ

Dr. Dragan Novaković, deputy Minister of Religions of Republic Serbia received Mr. Nenad Fogel, President of the Jewish Community in Zemun in a formal visit. The initial object of Mr. Fogel’s visit was to ask the Ministry of Religions to maintain its role as the general sponsor of the Zemun Jewish Community website; it was also the proper opportunity to inform on the recently released book about the Righteous of Serbia published by JCZ. Next, JCZ President Nenad Fogel informed Dr. Novaković about the activities of the Jewish Community in Zemun and among other stated:” We have to deal, face on, with the consequences of the Holocaust and tell the people without any constraint that speaking in numbers, we, as an entity, have been reduced to a number smaller than one percent of the population of Serbia. Our one chance to survive is to nurture the culture and tradition of Jews that have lived for centuries in these parts, something that JCZ is trying to achieve by way of its publishing activities.”
In an informative and frank conversation Mr. Nenad Fogel spoke to the Deputy Minister of current events in the Jewish Community in Serbia. He stressed the necessity for state institutions to obtain full insight into the organizational structure of the Jewish Community in Serbia. Mr. Novaković expressed his support for the activities of JCZ and opened the question of decentralized administration, i.e. the degree of independence of certain Jewish Communities.  Mr. Nenad Fogel voiced his view that Jewish Communities in Serbia have a high degree of independence in their activities, but also stressed how individual communities are obliged to coordinate their management and activity with the Statute of FJC in Serbia. Mr. Nenad Fogel explained how from the founding of the Federation back in 1919 all Jewish Communities were obliged to become its members and how the necessity to act jointly is even greater today since the basic interest of all communities are one and the same. This unity today is even more important in light of the process of restoring Jewish property. He particularly stressed that the leading role within the Jewish Community in Serbia rests with its President and that decisions are passed by the Federation Executive Board whose members are the presidents of all Jewish Communities in Serbia and lastly, that the role of the rabbi is purely of a religious character.
Mr. Novaković appraised the productive work of the JCZ and his gratitude for the detailed information presented to him. He promised the full cooperation of the Ministry in future projects undertaken by the Jewish Community in Serbia.

October 28th 2010. - A night brimming with emotions

Sinagoga Beit Daniel u Tel AvivuThe premiere presentation in Israel of the book “Righteous among the Nations – Serbia” was held in Tel Aviv on October 28, 2010. The book promotion in the Beit Daniel synagogue was opened by Nenad Fogel who at the very start stated: “I have great pleasure in being here with you tonight and in the company of three authors, three Milan’s: Milan Ristović, Milan Koljanin and Milan Fogel. Above all I would like to express my gratitude to the President of the Hitahdut oley ex Yugoslavia, Mr. Ben Shahar for his kind invitation. My special thanks to Mr. Josef Žamboki without whose generous donation we would not have been able to present today the book about the Righteous among Nations – Serbia, published by the Zemun Jewish Community.” (see the whole speech) He then expressed his gratitude to associate Miriam Aviezer Steiner, who assisted in the acquiring of relevant material which proved to be of great importance to the author Milan Fogel in writing the authentic life-stories of the Righteous. On the other hand Milan Fogel made every effort to maintain a logical thread by perfecting each story detail. The fact that he lives in Israel helped him to get in contact with many survivour Jews who immigrated to Israel upon World War Two. Before he began writing the stories Milan Fogel came to Belgrade to study material archived in Belgrade’s Jewish Historical Museum. As a result of this copious, two-year preparatory research work over 60 stories about the Righteous of Serbia came to life. Beside the mentioned authors and the book editor present at the promotion were English translator Olivera Polajnar and proofreader Ida Dobrijević. Photos illustrating this text were taken by the book’s technical editor Jugoslav Rakita.

He also expressed his views that the book is an important contribution to the battle against anti-Semitism both in Serbia and globally. In his address to the public he pointed out that he intimately re-lived the individual destinies of the people he was writing about in the stories since he too was a child of a saved Jew. The scale of his emotional involvement at times affected his writing skills making it hard for him to distance himself from the theme of his stories; the thought that what he was writing about had actually happened, never left him throughout the period of story writing. His closing words expressed his hope that he had managed to portray the significance of the Righteous of Serbia as well as their struggle to preserve the lives of Jews who were more often than not completely unknown to them. Speaking to the audience Professor Milan Ristović pointed out: “… a feeling of pleasure, deep inside, to be here with you all this evening. The possibility of sitting in front of a public of whom many are part of the history a historian is involved in, generates a rare feeling of satisfaction.” Professor Ristović maintains the view that there are always two sides to a story, i.e. history. One that studies human destinies from afar and thus loses sight of the so-called ordinary people. Although an inherent part of history, their presence in such studies is obscured. The other history attempts to deal with the very people it studies and to discern the core of human destiny. Further on Professor Ristović spoke of the prevailing conditions in Serbia during World War Two, how its territory was divided into five occupation zones with different forms of administration. In conditions when all who helped to rescue Jews were exposed to a fate equal to theirs, the fate of the persecuted victim, there were still people in Serbia who took the destitute into their homes. The fundamental idea, of selflessness, humanity became the most efficient weapon to undermine a horrendous system that governed over Serbia during the war. His speech ended with stressing once again his hope that the book shall represent a monument to those who helped people in need as well as to those whose lives were saved. Dr. Koljanin began his address by noting: “I had the privilege to be one of the authors of the book that now stands before you. Primarily I would like to stress the one thing, which I am certain, is its principal message, i.e., that in the direst circumstances there is always the possibility of deciding whether to help someone who is in mortal danger or to turn one’s head away. Taking into consideration how saving Jewish lives during World War Two dictated serious repercussions and life threatening risks not only to those who gave shelter but to their entire families too, it becomes clear that not everyone is capable of deciding to go down such a road. However, those who were prepared to help the persecuted showed such courageousness that they inadvertently became heroes; heroes of a special kind, different from those traditionally acclaimed in times of war.” Further on in his address Dr. Koljanin pointed out: “Instead of masses of anonymous people, numbers, great battles, portrays of mass destruction and desolation the reader of the book is faced with the individual, a human being with all his fears, dilemmas, weaknesses but a also with his determination, wish to help, to express his protest against evil, against occupation and against all who personify such circumstances.” Continuing on he also explained to the audience that his task was to present the Jewish Community of Serbia and later on Yugoslavia. This long period begins with the Karadjordje uprising and the reign of Miloš Obrenović. His segment of the book ends with the demise of the Yugoslav state after the attack of the Axis forces on Yugoslavia in 1941. His final words were dedicated to the important role Jews played in the liberation of the country: “Despite all the adversity they were exposed to members of the Jewish Community took part in the battle against anti-Fascism in large numbers and uncompromisingly showed their determinedness to defeat the enemy. Such resoluteness also notably marked their Jewish identity.”

In expressing his gratitude Mr. Stanojević said: “I am grateful to the authors and the publisher for bringing to life this exceptional work which is a contribution to the repute of both the country of Serbia and Serbs, as well as a confirmation of the battle of the Serbian people against Fascism.” He especially thanked the Zemun Jewish Community, as well as the Jewish Community in Serbia, maintaining the view that such events contribute to building and maintaining ties among the two people and are of significance for future coming together of both countries in other fields of activity. At the end of his speech he pointed to the broader moral significance of the book from its historical aspect, as well as to its aspect of envisaging a future that lies in wait for us all.

Next on the program was the viewing of the documentary film about the Righteous. The film script was written by Nenad Fogel. Mr. Rakita was film and sound editor. It was the final event of the presentation of the book about the Righteous from Serbia.

October 22, 2010 - In Salute of the Citizens of Serbia

The State Hall of Belgrade’s Municipality was too small to receive all those who wanted to express their respect and gratitude to the true heroes of World War Two. By publishing the book “Righteous among the Nations – Serbia” written by Milan Fogel, Milan Ristovic and Milan Koljanin, the Zemun Jewish Community brought back to life the deeds, and the unprecedented courage, shown by citizens of Serbia in their attempt to save their Jewish cohabitants from certain death. The introductory speech to the presentation was made by publication editor Nenad Fogel who among other stated: “I have great pleasure in announcing the presentation of the book “Righteous among the Nations – Serbia”, published by the Jewish Community in Zemun. The book we release today pays tribute to the brave people of Serbia, who during World War Two, to cite the writer of the life-stories, Milan Fogel, under threat of death, dared to rescue people of Jewish descent who were, more often than not, completely unknown to them. See the whole speech

Second to address the audience was Professor Filip David who spoke of the section of the book containing the life-stories about the rescue and the fates of both saviours, the Righteous, and Jews saved. He noted how Jews in pre-war Yugoslavia were practically assimilated, many seeing themselves as Serbs of the faith of Moses. However, the sense of belonging to the Serbian people and state could not help them stay alive during the Nazi occupation. He specifically stated that the Jewish Community cannot accept the fact that in Serbia today those that were responsible for the extinction of over 90% of the Jewish population of Serbia are being rehabilitated.
By reading the incredible stories of the destinies of the Righteous Dr. Milislav Stojadinović who during the occupation held the post of Belgrade mayor for a short time before the Germans replaced him, dissatisfied with his engagement in the war effort, and that of Hayria Imeri Mihaljić, a Roma from Kosovo, our renowned actors Marijana Petrović and Predrag Ejdus helped our guests get acquainted with the content of the book. The heartbreaking story of Hayria and little Stela brought the audience to tears.
In his succinct speech Professor Milan Ristović once again stressed the amazing courage of those individuals who exposed themselves and their entire families to danger, fully aware of the death threat to all, if found out. Pronouncement of the death penalty was legalized by the collaborationist government of Milan Nedić, together with other racist legislation imposed by the German occupier.
In his speech Dr. Koljanin acquainted the public with the section of the book in which he portrayed the status and life of Jews from the time of the decline of the Ottoman Empire and re-instatement of the Serbian State, up to the foundation of Yugoslavia, as well as of the years of living in Yugoslavia during the period between the two wars.
Dozens of descendants of the Serbian Righteous came to Belgrade to attend the book presentation gathering. All of them received a set of the publication: the book about the Righteous in Serbian, its English version and the multimedia CD with the film about the Righteous, as a small token in honor of the event.
Among the guest attending the presentation was Mr. Robert Sabadoš, Deputy President of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia. Representing Belgrade City administration was Mr. Zoran Alimpić, Municipality Deputy President. Dignitaries of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Islamic Community and the Catholic Church were also among the event’s guests.

The choir of the Serbian-Jewish Singing Society, led by maestro Djordje Stanković opened the event by performing the Israeli and Serbian national anthems. The presentation ended with the choir singing the song, L’Dor Vador – from generation to generation, truly befitting the theme of the event.

October 21, 2010. – Book Presentation Press Conference

A press conference covering out latest edition of the book and video film “Righteous among the Nations-Serbia” was held today in the state room of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia. First to address our guests, representatives of Belgrade newspaper and electronic media, was edition editor Nenad Fogel. He informed reporters of the scope of the project leading up to this publication already assigned capital work status. Prof. Dr. Filip David and co-author Milan Koljanin both spoke of the historical background of the book’s subject, as well as, of its significance in the light of present day social and political conditions.

September 8, 2010 - The New Year of 5771

Reminiscing about all the good things achieved in the previous year, members of the Zemun Jewish Community observed the coming of New Year 5771. All attending guests expressed their readiness to do everything needed in the next “ten days of repentance” in order to be entered into the Book of Life.
Today’s event was also an opportunity to discuss, and agree on, the forthcoming activities of Zemun JC. The group visit of Zemun Community’s members to the traditional Hinena gathering, once again organized by the Jewish Community in Subotica, will be the first event at the level of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia. By tradition, October is the month of books, and our contribution will be the presentation of the book published by JC Zemun Righteous among the Nations – Serbia. The promotion is scheduled for October 22 and will be held in the state-hall of Belgrade City Town Hall.

We wish all our members and friends a good and sweet New Year - Shana Tova Umetukah.

September, 5. 2010 – The Jewish Community of Zemun marked EDJC

By now an adopted tradition, we marked the European Day of Jewish Culture in the presence of our esteemed guests and members of our Community. It was just the perfect occasion to present to our guests, regulars to our celebrations, a visual recapitulation of JC Zemun’s activities in the past two year period. The booklet accompanying the video of the “Open Heart” exhibition contains 40 photographs. Printing of this catalogue was financially supported by Zemun Municipality and JOINT. The famous film director Goran Marković in making a tour of Zemun, stopped for a moment in front of our Community home; to invite him in to join our festivities came naturally. He willingly accepted. We learned that the reason of his tour of Zemun and its vicinity was to assist his colleague from Germany (of Jewish descent) in his research for data for a documentary film about volksdeutchers from Vojvodina. Mr. Marković was surprised to learn that Zemun has its own Jewish Community. We were glad that we could furnish him with our book about the history of the Zemun Jewish Community.

August 5th 2010 - “Bringing down of the curtain”

The testimony of Đorđe Stojanović from the village of Malajnica, near Negotin was the final take of the documentary release included in the Righteous among Nations Project. Đorđe Stojanović, vividly excited, recounted his memories of the day back in the year of 2000, when the Ambassador of Israel to Belgrade, Zoram Shani presented him with the Righteous medal. We filmed him standing in front of the house which had served as headquarters for various military formations during the war. Đorđe revealed how the house had first been inhabited by Draža Mihailovic’s Chetniks and subsequently handed over to the Germans. At the same time the Jewish family of Žak Levi, successfully kept in hiding by the master of the house, was literally “staring them in the face”.

July 25, 2010 – We Remember

By reading the names of the 574 Zemun Jews that perished in the Holocaust, the few of us, descendants of the few dozen fortunate to escape the Ustashi dagger, desired, to once again, remind all those who seem to have forgotten in such a short time the enormity of the suffering of our Community in Zemun. Led by Nazi ideology the Ustashi regime deported all Jews from Zemun to the death camps in Jasenovac and Stara Gradiška. One of our survivours, Scheer Alfons with his son Marko placed the Community’s commemoration wreath in front of the victim’s memorial. President of FJCS, Aleksandar Nećak accompanied by Danijela Danon also placed a wreath in the name of the Federation. The wreath of the Jewish Community in Pančevo was placed by JCP Predident, David Montias and Mira Kohn.

July 4th 2010. – Maccabiade on the lakes

Today The Jewish Community Zrenjanin held it's famous " Maccabiade "- traditional friendship through sports activity which contributes to the rapprochement and strengthening ties among the members of our communities. This time the event was held at Zrenjanin Pescara resort. In this sunny and warm day refreshments in the lakes were available. The hosts organized an attractive and comprehensive program that included members of all ages. Our Zemun team did not participate in the competition part, but certainly shared a pleasure of fellowship and recreation with dear friends from the Jewish communities of the region. After returning to Zemun and saying goodbye our common words were: "we had great time, it was so cool!"
May 2010 - An opportunity to meet with members
As if by written rule, a shipment from the WJR is delivered to our community at an equal semi-annual rate. Our request that the esteemed humanitarian organization supplies relief on a monthly basis seems not to have caught their attention. However the present modest shipment comprised of mainly second hand merchandise was good bait for members to gather for the occasion.

May 07, 2010 - Swift Police Action

The message we found this morning posted on the name plate of our Community once again brought to mind the reality of our situation. We have almost forgotten what it felt like to be “targeted” by a nationalist organization. Anti-Antifa Beograd, as they have dubbed the branch of a much wider organization unequivocally states the goals of their struggle and that we too have been selected as a target. The one encouraging thing in the whole dismal event was the swift reaction of police forces and the subsequent inspection. The police also spoke to the mayor of Zemun. We expect further investigation will determine not only the culprits but also persons who instigated the act and uphold such threats.

Members of our Community attended this year’s family seminar named 3Ds –ability, achievement, contribution held in Kladovo. The four day program was truly packed with contents ranging from education to religion, art, recreation and entertainment. Flowers were placed on the monument dedicated to the so called “Kladovo Transport” marking the place where Jews from Central Europe came in 1940 in their attempt to escape Nazi extinction and reach a safe port on their way to the Holy Land .
Socializing with other 280 members of Jewish communities from almost all countries of former Yugoslavia was merriest in open space country, the park inside the “Fetislam” tower and during the journey along the Danube in the tourist boat "Đerdap".
Due compliments go to the organizers and hosts of this event who implemented such a complex and copious program so successfully.

April 25, 2010 - Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of JC Zemun

On Sunday, April 25, 2010 the members of the Zemun Jewish Community held the Community Annual Meeting. In the presence of a large number of its membership and Federation President Aleksandar Nećak the president of JCZ Nenad Fogel opened the Meeting. After the Meeting committee was selected: Jova Đorđević – chairman, Erna Kovačević and Mihajlo Farkić – committee members, Ria Beherano recording secretary and Verica Marković and Mirjana Eberle records attesters, the Meeting began work. Jova Đorđević presented the Annual Report drawn up by the auditing committee regarding JCZ 2009 budget financing which was unanimously approved by the Meeting. Reports on the Community’s operation and the JCZ budget for the year 2009 were presented and unanimously approved. Federation president Aleksandar Nećak explained in detail why the JC Zemun budget for 2010 does not contain provision of Federation funds for JCZ’s cultural projects and EDJK as well as why the funds for administration operation have been reduced. Members were surprised to hear that its community had been deprived of funding for important segments of community operation due to the fact that the majority of Jewish Communities’ presidents had foregone to duly authorize Federation president to make additional effort (i.e. apply with various state funds) to procure deficient funds. When their consent was finally obtained all terms for application to funds available to the Federation had expired. However upon the president’s promise to try to secure necessary proceeds by the end of the year, the budget for 2010 was unanimously approved by the Meeting.

Nenad Fogel reported on JCZ projects planned for 2010. Special mention was made of the implementation of the project “joys of socializing” envisaged as visits paid to all Jewish Communities in Serbia which cultivate gastronomy. The Meeting concluded that our members intend to actively contribute to the success of such meetings (to the last morsel). To aid our hosts in providing diversity to the “joys of socializing” program we plan to promote our latest video exhibition and catalogue on the work of JCZ from 2008 to 2010. The catalogue and video exhibition project had apart from JDC received support (financial) from the Zemun Town Hall .

In answer to the request made by the choir “Srpsko jevrejsko pevačko društvo’’ (Serbian-Jewish Singing Society) the Meeting resolved to accept the offered cooperation by accepting its membership as JC Zemun’s associate members. It was decided that cooperation with a choir of such repute led by maestro Đorđe Stanković would be of consequence and to the interest of both parties. We expect this cooperation to be of importance not only to JCZ but also to the entire Jewish community of Serbia .

Next on the Meeting agenda was Marija Salom’s request for community support for applying to the London Rothschild Foundation in connection with her “family book” project. Although, in principle we do not support private projects the Meeting decided to take the request into consideration once the filled in application is submitted to the community for appraisal. In view of the explanations presented to the Meeting by Federation president it was decided that a proposal should be submitted at the forthcoming Federation Annual Meeting to adopt a standardized form for cultural projects application. It is expected that such a form will provide future transparent and unbiased decision making regarding applications submitted by all Federation members.

The Embassy of Israel in Belgrade held a formal reception on April 21st, Jewish independence - Yom Ha’azmaut. Numerous guests came to mark the 62nd anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. After drifting from one end of the world to another Jews have finally come to the exact place where 2000 years ago their state was lost. Beside members of the Zemun Jewish Community, present at the reception were many activists from Jewish Communities in Serbia . The attendance of the president of the Federation Aleksandar Nećak and presidents of all Jewish Communities in Serbia underlined the importance of the occasion.
Theodor HerzlThis year will be dedicated to the observance of 150th year of the birth of Theodor Herzl, the ideological originator of the modern state of Israel . The Embassy of Israel in Belgrade in collaboration with the Zemun Town Hall has planned a series of activities to commemorate this important anniversary. The Zemun Jewish Community intends to participate proactively in celebration events since Theodore Herzl’s ancestors were Zemunians. Theodore Herzl’s father Jakov was born in Zemun not far from the noted Ashkenazi synagogue in which rabbi Yehuda Alkalai, the political predecessor of Thodore’s Zionist movement served for 50 years. Inside the Jewish cemetery in Zemun the monuments of Theodor Herzl’s grand-mother and grand-father stand out. The Zemun Jewish Community is proud of such heritage and reverently preserves in memory the contribution of its membership to the idea of the restoration of the state of Israel .

March 20th 2010. - Synagogue in Fremantle – Australia

In the continuation of our research on the Jewish Australia time brought us into the city Fremantle in Western Australia . We were genuinely surprised by the fact how many similarities between our two communities. The Synagogue was built by the Fremantle Jewish Community in 1902. Just before the outbreak of the 1st world war, services in Fremantle were discontinued, and various organizations (religious and others) rented the premises until its sale. A new commercial frontage has been added to the original building.

March 18th 2010 - President JOZ visits JC in Perth

Makabi centarOrtodoksna sinagoga u PertuUlaz u CentarMendi Krecmer i Nenad Fogel ispred Jevrejskog centra u PertuIn order to know the conditions in which Jewish community in Australia works, we visited the Jewish center in Perth . Mandy Kratzmer, the chief administrator of the Center, showed Ida Best and Nenad Fogel a number of halls and classrooms in which they maintain their activities. Center offers various programs of cultural, social, educational, and recreational fitness programs to for all age. The Center is also home to many Jewish organizations and youth groups. During a brief visit, we met with the work of the Holocaust Institute. On this occasion we had presented our printed and electronic publications about research of Jews in Zemun. They were pleasantly surprised by the number of our publications, especially considering the size of the community in Zemun (140 members). We on the other hand were surprised their assertion that they consider themselves a small community (10,000 members). This small community has elementary and secondary schools that are considered the leading educational institutions in Perth . The community operates several synagogues of different orientation, from orthodox to liberal. This was a good opportunity to announce the arrival of Shabbat into the local synagogue.

March 3rd 2010 - Once there was ...

I came (with GPS) in the street 29 November to visit Andeselić, married Vera Petrovic, who lived the war years in the Princess Olga St. and after the war at the same address in Djure Djakovica St. Today, without changing the address, in fact, lives in the Boulevard of Despot Stefan. And these war years did not matter where you live, but the kind of' "material'' you're made of. Lenka Lunginović, Vera's friend, was taken on January 19th  on the road of no return to the German camp Judenlager Semiln. Vera, her mother Mary and sister Natalia were then doubting to take care of the little two-year Sonja. Vera Petrovic, born Andeselić, is one of the few righteous living in Serbia . We had the honor and privilege to record the testimony of that brave and humane woman for film about women on the Righteous from Serbia .

February 28, 2010 - Celebration of Purim among Friends

Members of the JC in Zemun are left with no possibility to celebrate our holidays with a religious service. Since we have neither synagogue nor rabbi, it did not take long for us to decide to celebrate Purim in Subotica this year. Before going to the synagogue our little group attended a short seminar on farmstead “Jelen” near lake Palić . The seminar subject was a palatable “perklet”. Owing to these successful preliminaries and free of any gut angst we attended the synagogue service in heartwarming serenity. As the evening unrolled it brought to life the full beauty of Purim’s joyous celebrations. In the company of the Osijek membership, the many hosts and music of exquisite tambourine players we rejoiced as if this very year Estera had saved Jews in Serbia of anti-Semitic literature. Many wore masks but no one had thought of dressing up as Robert Szabados. It wasn’t as if he wasn’t spoken of him.

Brother and sister Predrag and Gordana Čonkić, married Paskota, both elderly people, owe and are grateful for the serenity of their old years to Emilija Vukov and her daughter Vukica. Emilija Vukov, a distant cousin of theirs, was resolved to save them from imprisonment in the Sajmište death camp which once entered into could only be exited by a specially designed truck know as the “smothering” vehicle. By this vehicle Jews were taken to Jajince and on the way there suffocated by exhaust gases delivered through pipes into the truck body where the prisoners were seated. The courageous Vukica first took the children to their flat in Cvijćeva Street in Belgrade . In the course of the years that followed she would take them from Belgrade to Bečkerek and back, a number of times.

February 22, 2010 - Judging by the first telltale signs…

puna salaToday the Council President of Zemun borough, Mr. Branislav Prostran received the President of the Zemun Jewish Community, Mr. Nenad Fogel. The meeting was conducted with efficiency and in a manner highlighting Mr. Fogel’s request for the borough’s new administration’s backing as regards Zemun Jewish Community endeavors to reclaim the building of the former synagogue. Mr. Fogel stressed that the Zemun Jewish Community has, together with former borough administrations, been searching for an equitable solution for the past ten year period. During all this time reasons why the Jewish Community of Zemun had had to sell the synagogue in 1961 were never touched on. The Council President replied that the problem must first be dealt from its legal aspect by jurists, but that he personally felt that the best solution would be to return the synagogue as compensation for the ample real estate requisitioned from the Zemun Jewish Community. He further stressed that the Municipality is willing to take a proactive part, within feasible limits, in the implementation of our Community’s projects.

February 19, 2010. The Righteous Andrej Tumpej

Andrej TumpejThe search for a photograph of Andrej Tumpej brought us to Matilda Kalef – Čerga. Far back in 1941, just a girl of twelve she found refuge together with her sister Rahela with the nuns of the parish of Saint Cyril and Methodious in Banovo Brdo. Andrej Tumpej, parish priest at the time, helped the Kalef sisters survive the first months of the ferocious pursuits of Jews in Belgrade . Although his vocation took him across the entire territory of Yugoslavia after World War II Matilda kept in constant touch with him right up to his death. The fact that he performed the wedding ceremony for Matilda and Čerga Oton while serving in Bitola speaks best of the strength of the relationship between them.

January 31. 2010. Two more years to the Sholet "Bar Mitzvah’’

puna salapredsednici se oblizujudelegacija JOZEleven years have passed since Ruben Deutsch proffered his culinary expertise to a gathering of Jews from ex-Yugoslav territories. Over 400 guests availed themselves of the occasion to once again meet up with dear, old friends which they may not have seen since the last Sholet. This year’s key theme was Jewish jokes or jokes about Jews. Moca Momčilović, an SNP theater actor hosted the program, seasoning it with reading witticisms, the best of the best. Many guests matched the organizer’s invitation to add to the merriment and present their entertainment skills to the public. Their success was irrefutable they made everybody laugh at them. The main event, Sholet lunch was served on time. The tireless lady activists of the Novi Sad Community saw to an unbroken flow of new bowls of cooked beans to the table, as it seemed to vanish “faster than lightning”. We all thought that the pace would slow down once the beans had been eaten. However, when poppy seed and walnut strudels popped up on the tables they were assault with equal zest. The saddest part was the parting whether of friends or the delicacies one cannot be quite sure. We shall have to check that out next year at the new Sholet.

January 31. 2010. - A Righteous of Novi Sad ,  Dr. Dušan Jovanović

Pal RosenweigJovanka Jovanović, the wife of the late Dr. Dušan Jovanović, opened a new page in the writing of the story about the rescue of a group of Jews in 1944. We are indebted to Mrs. Jovanović for the letter she gave us by which we learnt new details about the courageous act of the medical staff of the Novi Sad hospital.  In a short letter written in Hungarian the son of one of the saved Jews, George Rosenzweig described how his father Pal found shelter by escaping to the Novi Sad hospital.  He was accepted by Dr. Jovanović who hid him in the hospital basement. At the time Pal’s foot was heavily bruised so that he also received the much needed medical treatment. Beside photographs of Dr. Jovanović we received a valuable photo of the saved Pal Rosenzweig.

15. Shevat 5770. Tu Bishvat – the New Year of Trees

We did everything by the book except for the planting of a tree (chiefly because it is still wintertime in Serbia ). Instead we sowed seeds of understanding. David Montias and Mira Panić the president and deputy president of the Jewish Community in Pančevo together with about ten of their community members were once again with us for the day. The event was endorsed by the presence of Federation president Aleksandar Nećak. As always our friends from Zemun were there to celebrate the holiday with us. Together with us for the first time was the internationally recognized caricaturist, painter and architect Dragan Rumenčić, the doyen of the famous “Zemun School of Caricature”. As a token of his visit he presented our community with and aquarelle inspired by Zemun’s landmark - The Gardoš Millennia Tower. A lawyer by profession and great entertainer by talent David’s friend Moma was the “star’ of the celebration. In his short gracious speech he emphasized everything that we as a Jewish community uncompromisingly stand for, universal understanding and appreciation of difference. This was best made evident when led by Moma and his guitar we sang all the evergreens of Yugoslavia , those good old familiar tunes. Many were taken back to their days of youth by the music of his guitar. The sole representative of the new generation Andrej, was ready to lend a hand with rhythm section accompaniment.

January 23, 2010 -  New Year’s Concert of the Zemun Chamber Orchestra

A prized event to Zemunians for the past six years the traditional concert was organized by the Tourist Association of Zemun, the Zemun Air Force Club and the Club of Home Culture of Zemun once again this year.
The choice musical program led by Ružica Velimirović and the conductor Đorđe Stanković, M.A. came as a gratifying gift to the large audience. The vivacious and spirited conductor’s performance, in style with the Vienna New Year’s Concert offered genuine enjoyment to the public. As a special surprise the "Braća Baruh" choir led by Marlene Weinberger Pavlović was introduced to the public with a presentation that filled the space of the auditorium with an abundance of added energy.
Present at the event were members of our community under "the conductor’s staff" of Nenad Fogel and wife.

January 21, 2010 - Visiting the Prima Donna

Breda Kalef u svom stanu u BeograduBreda Kalef u staklenoj basti u svom stanuA catholic priest, a Righteous among Nations, was the small human link that helped save two young lives during World War II. By way of forged documents which Andrej Tumpej issued to Lidija and Breda Kalef, they managed to conceal their Jewish origins and attend regular state school classes. It was the first step in the two courageous sisters’ ferocious battle for survival. Furthermore, through Mr. Lukić’s kindheartedness the sisters were given shelter and living space in the attic of his house on Banovo Brdo. Mother Dona constantly crossed the distance between the village Draževac where she worked and Banovo Brdo bringing occasionally corn meal, potatoes and sometime even a demijohn of brandy which the hungry girls would drink to warm themselves up. The younger sister Breda (11 years old) took upon herself the burden of their continued existence. She took care of everything while her older sister dedicated her time to studying dentistry. The end of the war brought relief to all and for Breda Kalef a universally renowned carrier of Prima Donna.

January 20, 2010  - The Story of Sonja Baruh

Olimpijada Buba Stojanovic Kozlov cerka Nade JovanovicNada i Desanka Jovanovic za vreme Drugog svetskog rataDolores Moreno, daughter to Sonja Baruh of the renowned family of revolution leaders tried to help us to look into a World War II episode concerning the rescue of her mother. During December 1941 Miroslav and Zlatica Kirec gave shelter to Sonja while she was waiting for a liaison to take her to a safer place in central Serbia . Our role as investigators compels us to turn our attention to the video statement Sonja made to Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation in order to learn more details about the story. By personal initiative Miroslav Kirec was proclaimed a Righteous among Nations in 1990.

January 20, 2010 - Olimpijada on the Righteous

Dolores Sela Moreno cerka Sonje BaruhIn the manner of a CI unit we uncovered the daughter of the Righteous Nada Kozlov nèe Jovanović. Olimpijada Stojanović – Kozlov readily answered our request to recount the story of young Kalmi’s rescue she’d so often heard from her mother. Once more we were struck by the startling courage of individuals who in those horrific times of war when life literarily meant nothing saved lives against all odds. Boža Jovanović, Olimpija’s grandfather had perished during the war never to know that the Jew, Levi Kalmi whom he had harbored in his home managed to survive it. For his courage Boža, his wife Desanka and their two children Nemanja and Nada received the Medal of the Righteous in 1968.

January 2010. - Sonja Lunginović’s Three Mothers

Sonja Lunginovic, 2010.stoje Vera i Marija donji red drugarica i Natalija Sonja u sredini , 1943.Sonja Lunginovic 1942.Compulsory research carried out within the framework of preparations for the book about the Righteous in Serbia prompted us to visit Sonja Lunginović whose touching life story is portrayed in the book. During World War II Sonja Lunginović was saved by Marija Andeselić and her two daughters Natalija and Vera. We couldn’t believe our luck when Mrs. Sonja showed us photographs taken in those harsh times of war. One was taken in 1942, another in 1943, a third in 1943 … Such photos are considered unique as the odds of being photographed during the war were very small; the likelihood that they would survive bombardments and war hostilities even less. These valuable documents of a devastating time will be preserved for posterity in the book “Righteous among Nations – Serbia ” prepared, written and issued by the Jewish Community of Zemun.

January 10, 2010. - Through The Arcade Of The Righteous

The site of today’s renowned gallery/bookstore “Arkade” ( Arcade ) in Zemun’s Njegoševa Str. No.5 has from times prior to WWII been the home of a brave and noble lady Mirjana Uglješić , married  Barbulović. In those days when the street’s name had been Sv. Nikolajevska her home was the ultimate refuge for many Jews and communists. She saw dozens of them leave from her doorstep to join the Partisan forces. Among them Pavle Belah, alias Hilko Hilić, saved by the joint efforts of Mira Cvijović, Antun Benčević and Mirjana Uglješić also found his way to the Partisans. Mira Cvijović was unfortunately killed in September 1942.
As recognition for saving Jews of Zemun Mirjana Uglješić – Barbulović, Antun Benčević and Martina Levec – Marković were awarded with the “Megila of gratitude” by the Federation of Jewish Communities in Yugoslavia .

January 10, 2010.  - Laughter tainted by Tears

“Don’t mind me. My laughter is always mixed with tears.” Eyes brimming with tears Mileva Stefanović married Svejtličić, a Righteous among Nations, reminisced on the horrors of World War II. We visited Mrs. Mileva, better known as Seka in her home in former Žarka Zrenjanina Street now renamed Vojvode Šupljikca. It appears that in Serbia heroes of war are slowly losing ground in their present-day struggle against wartime collaborationists, quislings and other enemy agents. This of course does not apply to Vojvoda Šupljikac (1786–1848), but to the many names that have found their way into Serbia ’s Who’s Who book of prominent Serbs. However, let us return to those who during WWII opposed and acted against the authorities, collaborators and the many enemies’ calls for the annihilation of a whole people, Jews.  Such were Mile Stefanović and his younger sister Mileva Stefanović from Jajinci. They never had any doubts about what was happening on the site known as Strelište that was just a few hundred meters from their house. The daily killings that went on there were not actually witnessed since the entire location was heavily guarded by Germans, but neither were they a secret. The stark reality of their surroundings only enhanced their resolution to save the Bararon family, their god-parents. We were fortunate enough to get in touch with Seka Svjetličić one of the rare Righteous still alive from whom we learned new details about the saving of Rivka and her baby Jaša Bararon. She also told us how Mile Stefanović obtained new identities, those of Radmila and Miša Babić for them. This was yet another breakthrough in our research work for the book about the Righteous of Serbia which is expected to come out at the end of the year.

It was this year’s crowning performance of our only amateur theater that has been active since 1986. Mirjam Salom’s undying affection and dedication for its wellbeing throughout the years has resulted in the staging of over 20 performances of assorted theatrical genre. The young actors: Lea Lovčević, Maša Đorđević, Oliver Nojman, Teodora Đurić and Nikola Jeremić inspired by the play’s exceptionally demanding text proved that they have matured into genuine amateur theatre personages.

December 15th 2009 - Fifth Day of Hanukkah Celebrated

hanukija od plasticnih cevihanukija od plasticnih cevi
The celebration of the fifth day of Hanukkah was marked by two special events. Respecting traditional ceremony the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade celebrated the holiday commemorating the victory over Hellenic occupation. For more on the celebration visit B92 site (in Serbian).
Across Belgrade in the Sukat Shalom synagogue members of the Jewish community observed the fifth day of Hanukkah by an appropriate service in the presence of many guests, among them President Boris Tadić. After the formal service the guests lit five candles in the synagogue’s courtyard. The Hanukkiah made of plastic sewer pipes speaks volumes of the imagination of the artist who remains unknown to us. The first or fifth candle, depending on which side you look at it, as Rabbi Isak Asiel remarked, was lit by President Tadić. The remaining candles were then lit by Episcope Porfirije of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Archbishop of Belgrade Stanislav Hočevar, Belgrade Mufti Muhamed Jusufspahić and the Minister of Religion Bogoljub Šijaković. Upon the ceremony of candle lighting the guests were given the opportunity to help themselves to traditional holiday food. Doughnuts and potato pancakes are obligatory items of all holiday feasts.

December 12, 2009. - Hanukkah in Zemun

Members of the Jewish Community in Zemun celebrated the second day of Hanukkah in the company of their closest friends and assiduous activists. This year the ceremonial of lighting candles was entrusted to Andrej the youngest community member. Assisted by the JCZ president (his grandfather) he lit the first two candles. As custom dictates once the candles were lit the Menorah was placed in the window so that passers by could see there was a celebration of “The Day of Lights” underway inside. Soon the grilled meat from ‘’Sač’’, the restaurant located in the building of our former Synagogue was brought to the acclamation of all present. Our many guests thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of our community to which they have become accustomed to during the past ten-year period of our gatherings at times of holiday. If by chance the Maccabees could have looked down on our celebration they would have certainly been proud of our openness to our worldly surroundings.

November 2009 - WJR Humanitarian aid

The London based humanitarian organization “World Jewish Relief” once again brought joy to many homes. The sight of happy faces which we haven’t seen since the April distribution was touching. What can one say? Thank you seems so insufficient. The apparent message would be. Monthly relief donations, the best recipe for continual membership gatherings.

In the company of my Subotica host Dušan Zvekić I visited Ms. Keiper Kornelia, the granddaughter of these kindhearted people. Visibly excited Kornalia spoke with great affection of grandmother Katarina and grandfather Bela. Apart from saving little Uri’s life (at the age of 4), Bela Kudlik is widely remembered as an expert maker of tambourines and leading violins. Uri Weiss, Pischta as Kornelia calls him lives in Israel today. The two of them have remained in close contact and come to each other assistance whenever need arises like any brother and sister would.

The Federation of Jewish Communities of Serbia 53rd Award winning contest was concluded with the ceremony of handing out of awards and relevant speeches of members of the jury. Federation President Aleksandar Nećak made special reference to the longevity of the Contest and expressed expectations that next year’s contest would render an even greater number of submitted works. The fact that our member from Israel Mr. Milan Fogel was among the award winners was exceptionally gratifying for us Zemunians. The acquired work Hajrija My Love is just one of the many true life stories that Milan has written for the book Righteous among the Nations – Serbia .

Bellow we list the Contest results:

November 15th,2009. - Serbian patriarch Pavle dies‎

We express our sincerest condolences to our Orthodox brothers for loss of their beloved patriarch Pavle

November 13, 2009 Contract for “Righteous among the Nations” book donation signed

Although widely considered as a “black Friday” it proved not so bad a day for the JC of Zemun. Today we signed an agreement for co-financing the “Righteous among Nations – Serbia ” book publication with the City of Belgrade . The agreement value is appropriate for the current state of finances in Serbia . Despite expectations of a larger backing for the project we are nevertheless sincerely grateful for the donation approved.
We hopefully expect that the new announcement of the Ministry of Culture of Republic of Serbia for financing of major literature and art projects will be floated in the near future. Backing for the project by the said Ministry would present important support for the issuing of the book about the heroic conduct of citizens of Serbia during World War II in saving lives of persecuted Jews.

November 10, 2009 -  Evening of Literature by author David Albahari

Once again this fall all those who hold the writing of David Albahari close to heart waited eagerly to meet him during the week of the October Book Fair when Belgrade becomes a city of books. The fair in Belgrade has given us all in Zemun successive opportunity to socialize with Mr. Albahari. This time the occasion was the publication of his book of stories “The Voiceless Song”. The book was presented in Zemun’s library “Sveti Sava”. In his word of introduction the evening’s host, library executive Mr. Milan Tepšić, expressed our shared pleasure in being able to welcome our Calgary co-Zemunian. Mr. Ivan Radosavljević, editor of “Stubovi kulture” gave a short preview of the author’s new collection of stories. Calling attention to the fact that 15 years ago the publisher “Vreme Knjiga” featured a selection of Mr. Albahari’s stories and that the new book “The Voiceless Song” contains a number of stories from the edition that had sold out many years ago, Mr. Radosavljević stated that the majority of the stories in the new book originate from more recent years. Although Mr. Albahari’s efforts have in the past period been directed to writing novels, the fact has had no bearing on his story telling enterprise so that in Mr. Radosavljević’s words “the stories and the new selection present an up to date insight of Mr. Albahari’s work in the literary form of the short story.” Mr. Albahari’s choice for the evening’s reading session was “My Husband”, in his words the saddest story he had ever written. Following the reading of the story the public had an array of questions for Mr. David. His sincere answers threw a new light on some interesting details of his opulent life experience.

October 10th 2009 - The European Day of Jewish Culture in Kikinda
The Pumpkin days, a well-known event, was an excellent opportunity to the Jewish Community Kikinda to mark the European Day of Jewish Culture. Since the old rule says that the photos worth more than 1000 words, we offer a gallery of photos from this unforgettable event.

October 1, 2009 - Works on the revitalization of roof structure finalized

Based on the Law obligating real estate (house) owners to maintain buildings in their tenure, JC Zemun carried out partial repair of our Community house roof structure. Officially, the house in Dubrovačka Street No. 21 is lawfully our property, however out of its 240 sq.m. the State has „generously“ given us tenancy of only 40 sq.m. The remainder has basically been taken from us by giving title to third parties i.e. protected tenants. On record, a  Law by which all city municipalities are obligated to restore ownership of property to legal holders by removing  “protected tenants” and providing them with adequate living space is effective, if only on paper. Conversely, during the nineties the Zemun Municipality systematically sold homes in its holding, among which approx. 900 sq.m. of requisitioned housing property previously in our ownership, aware that the same property would eventually become the subject of restitution. At present, we are bound by law to invest in the maintenance of buildings of which we have not been stripped off only formally. Can there be no end to injustice done in the name of Law?

Back up the running of the Jewish Community in Zemun.

September 20, 2009. ’’The Search ’’ is over
After more that a year we finally managed to make contact with the descendants of the Righteous Laslo Szagmeister owing to the effort of Ružica Lazović nee Hauser, a member of the Subotica Community. Still under the impression of the Rosh Hasana (5770) celebration we set off for Kanjiža where the late Szagmeister’s daughter-in-law lives. Exactly at the agreed time Mrs. Magda Szagmeister waited for us in front of her house. It was an unambiguous sign that we were very welcome. Barely had some time passed after we had unpacked our gear and positioned the cameras when Merlin Konja, grand-daughter to Laslo Szagmeister arrived from Novi Kneževac. The outspokenness of our hosts immediately generated a domestic atmosphere and made us feel quite at home. With the obligatory refreshments served we embarked upon the “official” part of the visit. Impervious to the two cameras shooting the scene the stories trailed one upon another, tears were shed from memories reaching back into the dark, horrific time of war. There were photographs all around us, three medals, one plaque and a large scroll presented by Yad Vashem honoring Laslo and Julia Szagmeister. Everything there spoke of the courageous act of saving the family Engler’s four month baby.
Julia and Laslo had resolutely claimed that baby Palika and their ten day older son Shandor were in fact twins. It went without saying that they had had to back this assertion by a sumptuous bribe in order to get the baby out of the ghetto established in Subotica in 1944. After that the instituted scenario took its course. At the end of June 1944, together with the other Jews from the ghetto, Magda Engler was deported to Auschwitz . The fact that she was deported with no child by her side gave Magda a better chance of survival. Mothers with children were immediately on arrival in Auschwitz killed in gas chambers. Fortunately Magda and her husband survived the horrors of the death camp and after four years took Palika from the Szagmeister family.

September 19, 2009  - Rosh Hashanah in Subotica

The mere mention of JC Subotica lights up the faces of us Zemunians. This time it was no different. On questioning our members who would be interested to celebrate Rosh Hashanah in Subotica a mini-bus full teamed up straight away. Some ten of our members turned out to be highly sought-after guest. They eat sparingly, never fail to bring a gift and most of all know when it is time for them to depart. Once the final service in the synagogue was over there was a lavish table laid out for us. The high point of the cuisine, poppy seed cakes naturally, came last. Present at the celebration were many neighboring communities – Kikinda, Sombor, Zrenjanin and Osijek . The Kikinda membership invited us to the traditional “Days of the “Ludaja” (i.e. “Silly”) Pumpkin”. Far be it that any likeness was intended since the invitation came in the wake of an agreement reached with event organizers to present a part of the bountiful Jewish culture of Europe . The actual Days of European Culture, organized by Kikinda JC are scheduled for October 11, 2009. Our visit to Subotica made it possible for us to exchange views with our friends from Zrenjanin, especially their President Ljiljana Popov. Along with some praises exchanged came a few censures but the general impression was that the days of misunderstanding were behind us and well on their way to be forgotten.
One more pleasant gathering came to its end with a stroll down central Subotica . The spot was packed with newlyweds being photographed beside the majestic fountain facing the city Town Hall .

September 19, 2009 - Palić "Ancora" Part II
As always life it-self writes its best stories. We never expected to be fortunate enough to meet yet another person who could testify to the atrocities of WWII amongst the inhabitants of the pension for the aged „Villa Ancora“. Captivated by our recording of Ester Kish’s testimony the kind personnel of the pension enlightened us to the fact that living inside the pension was Zuzana Varjaš a survivor of the Auschwitz death camp. An old lady of some 85 years of age with her hand set in plaster told us the heartrending story of the last days of war when in mid 1944 mass deportations of Jews to Auschwitz began in Budapest .
Ilona & Dr Zoltan LustigTogether with her mother Ilona, Zuzana was deported to Auschwitz, her father Dr Zoltan Lustig to Mathaussen while her brother Derđ was a forced laborer in Hungary . The entire tragedy of the times as well as the indestructible spirit of the victims of persecution was put in a nutshell by her mother when on their way to their uncertain destiny in Auschwitz she told her. “See Zuza, I have always sworn that I would take you on a trip round Europe and here I am now fulfilling my past promised.” In the final instance the fate of her family, originating from Bačka Topola was immensely fortunate. They had all managed to survive so that the entire family was once again together. Although he knew who had denounced them i.e. reported them Dr Zoltan Lustig kept it to himself firmly believing that the fact that they had all survived was sufficient to restore their lost piece of mind.

September 19. 2009. – Palić "Ancora"
The first day of the Rosh Hashana found the small camera team at the beautiful lakeside of Palić and the majestic pension for the aged “Villa Ancora”. The 91 year old Ester Kish, a nurse and the only living witness of the rescue of some twenty Jews who had found shelter in the Novi Sad Hospital in 1944, is savoring her retirement days in the tranquility of this beautiful edifice. Under the auspices of pension director Olivia Biro we were given the opportunity to record Mrs. Kish’s testimony. Notwithstanding her age she managed to recount in detail the passage of the procession of imprisoned Jews from the copper mine Bor on their way further north. While passing by the hospital some twenty prisoners had resolved to hide among the patients and thus try to save themselves from certain death. Dr Dušan Jovanović, a hospital resident at the time took on himself to take care of and safeguard the fugitives inside the hospital walls. His engagement together with Estera Kish’s testimony resulted in the presentation of the Righteous Award in 2006. Unfortunately, except for Dr Shapiro it has been impossible to get in touch with other saved Jews who could further enlighten the courageous act of not only Dr. Jovanović but that of the entire hospital staff.

September 2009. - New Graveyard Paths
Principally owing to the generous donations of Mrs. Michaela Wagner-Polgar we have had the opportunity to finalize the building of paths in our cemetery this year. By laying new paths we have enabled access to all parts of the cemetery habitually visited. With acknowledgment due to our tenant Peđa who carried out the technical part of the job within the scope of his regular annual duties we are also grateful to stonemason Miloš who sees to the renovation of damaged headstones.

September 13, 2009 - Kruševac and the Righteous
Miodrag and Budislava Veljkovic, wife andi Radomir PetrovićRebeka’s AlleyThe second leg of our journey brought us to the town of Kruševac where we continued our research and data gathering work for the documentary on the Righteous in Serbia . In Kruševac we visited the families that participated in the rescue of Rebeka Tajtacak and her four children. The street in which the Tajtacak family’s boarding house stood still bears the name “Rebeka’s Alley”. The wife and son, Budimka and Miodrag, of the late Dr. Milenko Veljković told us the poignant story of the Tajtacak’s plight. The fact that though Dr. Veljković had been one of the coordinators of their rescue and that he was not awarded the medal of the Righteous was very interesting to us. We sincerely hope that our research work will result in the amendment of this oversight. Our next host was Radomir, the son of the deceased couple Milivoje and Kosara Petrović, holders of the Righteous award. During World War II they kept the tavern ’’Srpska kruna’’ / “The Serbian Crown” where they often gave shelter to the Tajtacak family during the many raids carried out by German soldiers.
Before parting Miodrag, a pilot by profession promised to arrange an airborne shooting of the countryside round Donji Krčin, a place where the Tajtacak family was transferred to from Kruševac. We shall hold him to his word.

September 12, 2009 - The First Take of the Film about the Righteous
Shooting movieEtno house LatkovacLjubinka, Miloslav, Bogdan, Savkovic and Nenad
After comprehensive preparations we embarked on the realization of the second part of the project Righteous among the Nations – Serbia . The fist takes of the film chronicle planned for the CD accompanying the printed edition i.e. the book on the Righteous of Serbia were made in Aleksandrovačka Župa. Hosts to the small shooting team were the children of the now deceased Righteous, Slobodan Knežević, Borivoje Bondžić and Predrag Zdravković. We were fortunate to discover that some of the houses in which Dr Julija Dajč had found refuge had not been altered over the decades. We first visited the village of Latkovac situated some two kilometers from Aleksandrovac. Milisav Bondžić, a professor of history and son of the late Righteous Borivoje, spoke of how in time of war his father had successfully organized the hiding and safeguarding of the Dajč family. In the succession of Dr. Julija’s shelters he had finally managed to find a safe- haven in the home of the Knežević family. Ljubinka, daughter to Slobodan and Milenija Knežević recounted the circumstances under which Dr. Julija Dajč gave birth to her infant under their roof in 1943. From that day on Slobodan Knežević joined Dr.Julija’s, alias Radojka’s confirmed guardian Borivoje Bondžić in providing shelter for her. Today the Knežević house has been redone into a small hotel that offers its service within the so called Latkovac Ethno village.

Razgovori u BoturicimaSkloniste u BoturicimaIn the company of Bogdan, Predrag Zdravković’s son we visited the house in the Boturići hamlet where Dr. Julija had stayed right up to her transfer to Slobodan Knežević’s home. Inside the house at least one century old, the family had held on to the original bed in which Dr. Julija slept. The small house, in a sense a museum, today bears witness to the horrific times when human solidarity was invaluable.
The paramount experience we brought with us from Župa was the knowledge that our hosts had inherited the “righteous” genes of their parents.Nenad Fogel, September 12, 2009.

September 6/7, 2009 – E D J C
Dragan, Sladjana, Aleksandar i NenadVerica, Mihailo i MatildaThe observance of the European Day of Jewish Culture has become a tradition for the Jewish Community in Zemun. The opening part of the celebration was dedicated to the making of the documentary film about the Serbian Righteous among Nations. The completion of this film is a component part of the Zemun Jewish Community’s project intended to credit the many people who saved Jewish lives during WW2. This year’s manifestation theme being „Holidays and Tradition“, a visit was paid to our former Synagogue, now converted into a national food restaurant. It is a known fact that Jews have always had the greatest respect for proper nutrition so that the evening’s fare had its very own „kosher“savor.

July 26, 2009 – Commemoration Day of Zemun Jews killed in the Holocaust

This year being the 270th anniversary of the founding of the Jewish Community in Zemun we, community members, gathered on this day to pay our respects to all members murdered in the Holocaust. It is sad to note that far back in 1739 at the time the Community came into existence it counted more members than it has today. The traditional ceremony of reading the list of our Holocaust victims once again brought back to memory the 573 members that will forever stay with us. Upon the reading of the list the Rabbi said a prayer for victims of Fascist terror.

July 1, 2009. - Women In Orthodox Judaism

An ever compelling subject, the status of women within a society, i.e. a religious community was lectured on with precision, clarity and completely convincingly by Mrs. Danijela Danon, secretary of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia . In her presentation she deliberated the status of women in Orthodox Judaism. A highly dynamic lecture treating a specter of themes and dilemma was attentively listened to by a sizeable audience. Mrs. Danijela Danon’s presented lecture among other rendered an insight into the less frequently discussed relations of men and women. This matter primarily dealt with the obligations of women and to some extent men inside a sexual relationship whether matrimonial or prior to connubial bonds.

The renowned publicist and authority on religion prompted the audience to dwell on the eternal subject of relations between Christianity and Judaism. He did not fail to mention anti-Semitism which in his opinion is a global issue, Serbia included. The presenter of the event Ms. Marijana Ajzenkol, general secretary of the Intrareligious Centre, Mr. Aleksandar Nećak, president of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia, Mr. Dragan Stojković, reporter and publisher, Mr. Đorđe Aćimović, president of the Home culture club of Zemun, Miss. Dragana Mašić, graduate of the Belgrade faculty of Orthodox religion and many other took an active part in the ensuing discussion. In view of the noticeable commendations proffered to the host and event organizer it is the intention of the Jewish Community of Zemun to continue its support in developing good relations between all active churches and religious communities in Zemun.

In memoriam
Alexander - Shani Sharon (Schwitzer) - (1912 – 2009)

Alexander - Shani Sharon born far back in 1912 in the village of Dobanovci became a member of the Zemun Jewish Community before WW2.
In 1941, Shani shared the fate of all Zemun Jews and was driven to forced labour. However, he never fell for the stories that the Jews of Zemun would be spared from deportation to concentration camps. He therefore made plans to escape to the Italian occupational zone. In May 1942, Sani obtained fake documents and managed to leave Zemun. He met up with his relatives Adi and Aki Neumann heading for Metkovic. Initially they departed for Split , and then continued on to Novi Vinodol, Kraljevica, and finally to the island of Rab . By doing so they managed to reach the Italian occupation zone, where they spent some time in a concentration camp.
On Rab they lived to see the capitulation of Italy in 1943. They left the camp and joined the partisans.
Shani was twice wounded as a partisan soldier of the 7th Banija Division. For his merits he was awarded the Medal for Courage and the Medal for Service to the People.
Upon demobilization he lived in Zagreb . As a former partisan soldier he was entrusted with high functions in the Ministry of education of the Republic of Croatia .
He earned substantial respect as an expert in the field of education. However, in the turmoil generated by the Inform bureau, he witnessed the downfall of a number of innocent people. Although he could not be accused of any kind of subversive activity, he felt insecure and found his way out by immigrating to Israel .
Together with his wife Truda he settled down in Israel . They had lived together through the concentration camps and occupation. He took a new surname, Sharon .

As a professor of chemistry, Shani had no difficulty in mastering work in a laboratory, and since he too spoke a number of languages fluently, he learned Ivrit easily. His interests greatly transcended the work inside his profession. He voiced his opinions publicly in a number of newspapers and publications. Among them he wrote for Most the bulletin of the Association of immigrants from Yugoslavia to Israel , the site of theZemun Jewish Community, the Jewish Review and many other media in former Yugoslavia .
He was a critic of the impediments one encountered in many spheres of social life in Israel .  He was an ardent advocate of progressive ideas. A characteristic example was his article in which he opposed the idea of building the Third Temple in Jerusalem . After articulating obvious arguments he ended the article by asserting that at the time, the state of Israel had become a temple for the entire body of Judaism and that a better one could never be erected.

Shani died on May 2, 2009 . True to his beliefs till the end he donated his body to science study. He was buried in Jerusalem on June 1.

Zihrono livraha,
Nenad Fogel, president of Jewish community Zemun

June 14, 2009. - Kol Zemun
The doors of the Jewish Community in Zemun stood open from early morning hours. Diligent activist awaited their guests from all parts of Serbia . The reason for this event was the Kol Zemun – Voice of Zemun meeting, sponsored by the Federation i.e. all Jewish Communities in Serbia and the JDC. The first guests to arrive were from Kosovo, the city of Prizren . Next to come were the President of the Federation accompanied by his wife and Director of JOINT for Serbia . The bell kept announcing the arrival of guests ceaselessly. According to the precise event schedule the guests were to be taken initially to a visit of the Zemun Jewish Cemetery. While awaiting our friends from Zrenjanin who had confirmed their attendance, four members and the Community lady President, there came a startling telephone communication just as the academic 15 minute delay had elapsed that the guests were canceling their arrival. The community executive board had decided to boycott the meeting. Finally, the representative of JC Sombor, previously announced by Community President, failed to show following the manner of the delegation from JC Pančevo which had previously also cancelled its attendance by phone stating the same reason; not mentioning JC Niš and their already well known views. A highly perplexing situation, the smallest communities had decided that they had nothing to contribute to the subject agreed on by all – THE FUTURE OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY OF SERBIA.

The good and positive atmosphere that exists only among friends had not been outweighed by such disadvantageous decisions. A convoy of cars set off in the direction of the cemetery. Our recently completed project about our cemetery, Life upon Death – the Zemun Jewish Cemetery served as introduction to acquaint our guests with our community’s history and the fact that this year it will be celebrating 270 years from its foundation. During the visit Nenad Fogel the author of the multimedia CD supplied edifying details on cemetery history. Upon the cemetery visit the guest were given the opportunity to a vista of the entire town of Zemun . Some 300 meters from our cemetery we visited the Millennia tower built in 1896 that has become the symbol of Zemun town.

The motorcade was formed once again and we started off to our final stop the dock of the Quay Yachting club. While the guests were slowly finding accommodation for themselves on the upper deck of boat Duck, the crew was going though the final preparations for the four hour cruise along the Danube and Sava rivers. The engines came alive, announcing the start of one of the probably most important cruises for our community in last years. Where was our community heading? Are we in a position to maintain its course? Are we capable of bypassing circumstances that could leave it stranded on shores of sand, sludge and mud?

Upon the ceremonial opening of the meeting by Frederation President Aleksandar Nećak there came the salutation deliveries of Robert Djerasij JOINT director, Votim Demirij from Prizren, Draga Kon from Osijek and Mladen Herzl of Belgium. Next to follow was President of JC Zemun, Nenad Fogel who read out the standpoints of the Zemun Jewish Community on the subjects under consideration: who are we, how many of us are there and what are our expectations for the near future, how can we maintain the Jewish tradition within our community and finally our approach to facilitate conversion – Gijur to all within the community. In his ensuing short speech Rabbi Isak Asiel explained his viewpoint on the future of the community in which he has served for 15 years. He spoke of the efforts made to be of assistance to all who wish to prepare for Gijur regardless of the fact whether they would be taking it in front of conservative or liberal rabbis. He stated the fact that he presently had only one student and that it was necessary to compile some sort of primer book in Serbian for the needs of these novices.
Following the rabbi’s speech Robert Kovač from Subotica , Jovan Elezar from Beograd, Ruben Dajč from Novi Sad and finally Stojan Knežević from Kikinda addressed all present. Although we had previously acknowledged that no pronouncements would be brought on this occasion Federation Rresident strongly reproached the communities that had failed to send their representatives to the meeting requesting that at the next Federation Executive Board meeting the four small communities should be asked to explain their motives for abstaining from the event. He also informed that conclusions on subject matter discussed at the Kol Zemun meeting would be passed. Written material had thus far been submitted by the host, JC Kikinda and Sibotica. In anticipation of written suggestions and proposals from the remaining participants the work group headed by the event’s host would prepare conclusions to be deliberated by the Federation EB. The meeting participants acclaimed the proposal ending the first part of the two hour cruise.

The time came to address the quality of food served. The remaining two hours of the envisaged cruise was passed in food, drink and conversation, taking photographs of Belgrade and Zemun, plans for future gatherings… in a word it felt good to be one of those present at today’s Kol Zemun event.

June 2009 – The Letter of Gratitude from an Institution from Sremcica

The Jewish Community of Zemun, as always when receiving humanitarian aid, made a donation to people who need it. This time we gave a part of the received aid to the Institution for Mentally Disabled Youth in Sremcica-Belgrade.
The letter of gratitude can bee seen by clicking on this link.

June 4th 2009 – Visiting editor in chief of the Federation
According to decision of the Federation Board, Mr. Nenad Fogel accompanied by Mr. Jugoslav Rakita, the JCZ webmaster, visited Mr. Sasa Ristic, editor in chief of the Federation’s web site and the Jewish Review. On this occasion he exposed his experience in editing the JCZ site. Mr. Rakita, who designed and published the Federation web site, gave some very useful tips and suggestions regarding editing and publishing of new web pages which is now performed by a company who is contracted for further maintenance of the site.
It was agreed that all observations and suggestions for actions should be exposed on the next meeting of the Federation Board.

In expectation of the meeting on the future of the Jewish Community of Serbia – Kol Zemun June 14 we decided to make a small Step Forward toward Zrenjanin. In doing so we wished to demonstrate our desire to be part of a project which among other gives appropriate voice to our ongoing activity in Serbia . The broken Community nameplate (this time completely shattered), the kind hosts, cheerful guests, uniformed law enforcement officers greeted us at the very entrance of the Zrenjanin Jewish Community premises. The program on show in the packed house of the Public Theater ''Toša Jovanović'' was a fusion of many cultures and in a sense accentuated the co-habitant cultural and religious nature of the town of Zrenjanin . Sponsored by Zrenjanin Town authorities the participation of the Association of amateur cultural clubs of Zrenjanin, the Dance group Haverim Shel Izrael from Osijek , the Folklore group Ma'ayan from Novi Sad , etc. was proof again of the old saying that to differ is more an asset than a liability.
After a very successful show the hosts, well aware of the fact that love thrives on a full stomach took their guests to a formal dinner “spiced” with live music.

April 2009 - Humanitarian Aid
After a long interval we have once again received a package of humanitarian aid. Diligent activist from our social committee adorned our small premises with the goods sent. All at once the ceremonial room of the Jewish Community in Zemun was too small to receive all those interested in obtaining goods sent by the World Jewish Relief from London . Members who have for some time now only existed as names on lists came readily to the latest aid distribution big bag in hand. Part of the received package was put aside for our compatriots from Zemun who are in need of aid most.

April, 29th 2009 - Yom Ha’atzmaut
Embassy of Israel in Belgrade marked the 61st anniversary of declaration of the state of Israel . Reception for numerous banqueters from social, political and religious life from Serbia was or organized in the City Hall. As every year the event was attended by representatives of the Jewish communities in Serbia headed with Mr. Aleksanar Nećak, president to the Federation and his deputy Mr. Robret Sabados. The president of the Jewish Community of Zemun, Mr. Nenad Fogel was also present.

The International Chess League of Jewish Communities under the sponsorship of the President of Subotica Jewish Community, Tomika Halbror was held on April 24, 2009 . The attendance of seven teams Subotica I and II, Beograd , Novi Sad , Zemun, Pančevo, Zrenjanin and guests from Hungary – Hódmezővásárhely at the tournament initiated a new chapter in intra community relations. The valuable presence of the FIDE international judge Milorad Maravić upgraded the tournament to a professional level. Thirty contestants participated in the matches playing in both singles and team categories equally. The home team Subotica I won first place in the teams contest. Second were representatives of JC Beograd of whom three out of the four players were Zemun residents. Thus it could be stated that both Belgrade and Zemun won second place?! Third place went to the excellent Novi Sad team. JC Zemun was effectively seventh in the competition as it had one player only - Nenad Fogel. In the singles matches members of Novi Sad came foremost. Zoran Grujić a FIDE master won first place, second was FIDE master Ivan Uzjhazi, while Jancikin Svetozar, Kario Borivoje, Hegediš Antal and Panić Ratko shared third place. Nenad Fogel came 16th. Considering the distinguished class of his opponents it was a significant victory as by his own admission he had not played chess in the last 10 years due to the bulk of engagements in both Community and Federation work. The best came last: the presentation of honors and winner trophies coupled with excellent vine and tasty goulash.

Regarding the matches played Nenad Fogel extends his apologies to Aranka Erdelji for foregoing his refined mannerisms; having to topple her at the end he behaved in an ungentlemanly fashion. Notwithstanding the fact that the match ended in amity, he also expresses his delight in “giving a hard time” to Franja Perčić. He congratulates all who managed to defeat the number one of the Makabijada held in Sarajevo in 1971 (Nenad Fogel). In the end the Subotica tournament was a success for both winners and losers.

The Zemun Jewish Community commemorated the day of remembrance of the 6.000.000 Jews slain in World War II, Yom HaShoah, by screening the film „Burning Blood”. The film documenting the proliferation of different Fascist and Nazi groups in Serbia provided a sound base for the ensuing discussion. Taking into account the presence of numerous reporters, the event’s moderator Nenad Fogel approached the membership to debate the role of the media, especially of newspaper reporting that creates an apprehensive environment for all of different descent from that of the population majority. Dragan Stojković, editor and proprietor of the extinct newspaper Zemun Chronicle spoke overtly of the disillusionment with the decreed October 2000 changes. Tomislav Marković, one of Beton’s editor and e-news chief editor deputy spoke of the role of the press in supporting ultra-nationalist views of groups such as Nacionalni stroj, ’’1389’’, Obraz and many others. He pointed to the disturbing fact that despite the insignificant number of their supporters the groups had apparent backing from certain political parties. Nenad Altman spoke of the unseemly escalation of endeavors to rehabilitate declared occupation collaborators Milan Nedić and Draža Mihailović. Saša Ristić the editor of the Jewish Review also addressed the role of written media asserting that the bulk of news presently structured conceded to the taste of readers and generally “sold paper”. Mladen Hercl from Belgium was concerned by the fact that apart from the expected threat of nationalist and fascist groups there existed within the very Jewish community in Serbia people threatening the life of JC Zemun President, Nenad Fogel. Aleksandar Nećak, President of the JC Federation in Serbia highlighted our politicians’ practice of “fine-tuning” to base civic impulses in the hope that it will be pivotal to their future poll success. He also spoke of the problems in communication between our Community and the Government of Serbia. Taking part in the discussion Miodrag Bogić, Slađana Fogel, Đorđe Aćimović equally condemned the emergence of growing fascism in Serbia expressing their fear of the consequences for all Serbia citizens.

April 19, 2009 . - The Annual Meeting of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia

izvestaj presednika Saveza A. NecakaRadno presdenistvo i delegati JO ZemunglasanjeThe meeting which will be remembered for it’s „pace“and brisk conclusion had, never the less engendered an outstanding quality. It was to the credit of JC Kikinda Olge Knežević’s proficiency that we passed a transparent budget. Apart from the ceremonial procedures: the paying of respect to community members deceased in the period between the last two Annual Meetings of the JCS Federation, and the adoption of the Final Reports of the Federation and of all Communities, the implementation of the 2008 budget and the budget for 2009 were also passed. The Meeting agenda included the important task of electing the Federation Deputy President. Robert Sabadoš from the JC Subotica was elected following Ivica Hajzler’s resignation from the post. The Executive Board of the Federation will now, after an eight month setback once again function in its full capacity.  At the end President Aleksandar Nećak requested that delegates declare whether the program adopted for the previous year would continue to be adhered to or if there was any wish for it to be amended and redefined. His appeal to abide by the projected program was adopted by the majority present. Seemingly unimportant the support given will enable the JC Federation to finally define its stand in the matter of all recent events related to the withdrawal of the Anti Discrimination Bill.

April 12, 2009 – Opening night of the play”The Scent of Rain on the Balkans”

The book “The Scent of Rain in the Balkans” has been reprinted numerous times. Twenty five years after its appearance the best known work of the author Gordana Kuic has now moved on to the theater stage. It is a story of a Sarajevo Sephardim family living in the romantic and unsettling prewar and Second World War times. It is a story of love, sacrifice and family solidarity – presently living its life on stage where it has apparently always had its place too. Riki, Blanki, Buka and Nina, heroines which generations of women and men readers likewise have looked up to, now bow to the audience from the Grand Scene of the Madleniamun Opera and Theater. Dramatized by Nebojša Romčević, directed by Ana Radivojević Zdravković and upheld and lavishly assisted by its author Gordana Kuić – The Scent of Rain in the Balkans will no doubt be Madlenianums next great hit.
The selected cast is a major asset to the play’s popularity. The leading role Blanka is played by Sloboda Mićalović, while Ivan Bosiljčić is cast as Ignjat. Beside this popular pair also playing are Jovana Balašević (Riki), Dubravka Mijatović (Nina), Isidora Minić (Buka) and Ljiljana Stjepanović as Estera.

April 11, 2009 . - Passover celebration in JC Zemun

The celebration of Passover has once again brought to the mind of our Community members the most important part of Jewish history. In the company of dear friends from Zemun and the obligatory treats, the evening passed in no time. Our group of round twenty, like one family seated round the table took pleasure in recounting stories of the Exodus from Egypt . Also present was our dear guest Ms. Mariana Ajzenkol from the Intra Religious Center with whom we readily exchanged tales about the custom of painting eggs, a characteristic of both Christianity and Judaism. Marko Scheer explained the history of the making of matzo to guest who came to celebrate Passover with us for the first time. The evening would not have been complete without the custom vine which we received through the kindness of our rabbi. To say that the rabbi was missed would be insufficient, but we hope that by next year all will be amended.

April 8, 2009 . - The Passover Seder in Subotica

This year once again the Subotica JC has kept up its fine tradition of organizing meetings of small Jewish communities. The many guests present first attended the service in the Synagogue and then proceeded to enjoy themselves in the pleasant atmosphere of the ritual dinner. Robert Sabadoš greeted his guests just before the beginning of the Seder Dinner. After a brief “dramatic pause” he finished off by thanking President Nenad Fogel and the members of the Zemun JC for, as he pointed out, the simple fact that the journey they had traveled had been the longest. Our journey was far from that of our enslaved predecessors released from the bond of Egypt ; it had not lasted 40 years, but rather a little over two hours to get to our destination – Subotica . Nenad Fogel thanked the hosts for their warm welcome, pointing out that he had already though that the presence of Zemun members would pass unnoticed in the tradition of the previous President Aca Singer. The relaxed atmosphere was best continued with Tomika Halbror’s rhymed memo of the Seder Dinner list of items composed by rabbi Schmuel ben Shlomo Luzato. And thus began the official part of the festivity.

The ensuing parting was regretted by all since at the very end of the evening a heated debate on who were the leaders of the Jewish Communities got under way. A topical theme close to everyone’s heart was however left for some other appropriate time. We believe that the gathering “Kol Zemun” in June 2009 will be an occasion to once again pick up this interesting subject.

April 3rd 2009. - A visit to Zrenjanin

TablaThe President of the Federation Mr. Aleksandar Necak in the company of Robert Sabadoš and Nenad Fogel made an operational visit to the Jewish Community in Zrenjanin. On entering the town the visitors were affronted with the sight of the smashed nameplate of the Community house. The police had been informed immediately upon the offense and were presently engaged in finding the delinquents.

Robert Sabados i Aleksandar NecakAt the meeting the community administrators and members acquainted the visitors of all current community activity. In a constructive exchange of opinions it was concluded that there was no alternative to the necessity to uphold the bond between communities.
Making use of the occasion Nenad Fogel presented tickets for the forthcoming second night of the play “The Scent of Rain in the Balkans” to the JC Zrenjanin President Ljiljana Popov. In view of the existing collaboration between the Madlenianum Theater and the JC Zemun and in answer to the request of the Zrenjanin membership to view the play, the Zemun Community managed to obtain tickets for this special event and thus further promote amicable intercommunity relations.

March 19th and 20th 2009 – Djeric mates died

We advise all our members and friends of our community that spouses Charlotte (1026) and Predrag (1919) Sonnenfeld died. The funeral was held on the Zemun Municipal Cemetery last Saturday, March 21st. Charlotte Sonnenfeld was the only member of the famous Zemun family the Sonnenfelds who survived the WW2.

What a beautiful world this is Purim here, Purim there; plus a bonus visit to Palić. The wonderful sunny spring day made it possible for us to take a long walk by the Palić Lake and pay a visit to the Zoo, to satiate our lungs and heats for the forthcoming celebration in the Subotica Jewish Community. The hosts, well known for their hospitality welcomed us in the early hours of the afternoon. After some tasty nourishment the group went off to view the center with the president staying behind as the diligent “overseer” of the final decorations of the enchanting world of traditional cakes and goodies. Soon after other guest began to arrive; the president of the Hodmezovasarhaely Jewish Community, Dr. Erdélyi Miklós with a following of some ten community members, the president of the Osijek Community Damir Lajosh accompanied by Drago Kon and the children’s theatre, the dependable members of the Zrenjanin Jewish Community headed by their president Ljilja Popov, and the many members of the Subotica community who as custom has it brought the tastiest “homemade goodies” with them. We timidly placed our “fiery water” on the table which somehow seemed to find its way back to Zemun with us. The exceptional service in the Synagogue in keeping with the customs of Purim and abounding with floor stamping and bench drumming each time the name of the hated Haman was mentioned, was an appropriate introduction to the gathering that lasted well into the night.

Well aware that within the next twenty four hours the celebration was to be continued in Zemun we said a heartfelt goodbye to our dear hosts and to their bountiful spread. In the evening of March 15, we had a hard time to prepare a table equal to the dainties of the Subotica celebration. Going by the reaction of all present it seemed that we had somehow managed to reach their standard. Our loyal guests from Belgrade , Predrag Kon and Misa Levi arrived well prepared, masked and equipped with rattles in the custom of the celebration, and triggered a clamor of admiration. The rest of the evening was a good example of the proverbial “priest that marries” when the company is right. There was no end to the singing, from traditional Sephardim and Ashkenazi songs to evergreens and unforgettable chart toppers. Ovations followed Misa’s interpretation of the famous Napolitano ''Oh sole mio ''. Lastly, and quite predictably, uncle Peca described in detail his thrill at Marko Kon’s triumph at the Beovizija (Eurovision contest) Festival. Present in person among the public and upon victory in the “backstage” (as the English would have it in Serbian) too, he was given the chance to be in the know and to recount all the spicy stories beyond the reach of the ordinary viewer. For the first time, we can now proudly say that a member of our community will represent Serbia at a prestigious festival. The next celebration is scheduled in Moscow !

A. Necak congratulates the president

The warmest day of the generally declared tedious winter made it possible for our older members to attend the General Meeting of our Community. The meeting was of importance as elections for new members of all Community bodies were scheduled for the meeting. Upon hearing the annual reports and their approval special attention was given to modify and complement the stature of JCZ with that of the Federation of JC of Serbia. The procedure was an effort made toward the development and strengthening of the role of the Federation as the roof organization of all JC in Serbia . However our community’s autonomy and its centuries long specific identity has been maintained. To enable more efficient functioning of Community bodies the Board decided to appoint coordinators with specific tasks instead of cumbersome committees. In future there will be coordinators for activities consistent with work with youths, women’s action and cultural programs within the JCZ and the Federation.

Finally the election process for new body members of JCZ was attended to. In his closing speech Mr. Nenad Fogel thanked all present for reelecting him President of JCZ and on behalf of all elected members laid out the Community’s General action plan for the period 2009 to 2013.

February 16, 2009. - Sretenje social event

The Zemun Cultural Home club organized an evening party “Poselo” in name of the Sretenje national holiday. It was a fitting occasion for the club president Mr. Đorđe Aćimović to sum up last year’s club activities and particularly point out the ceremony of the Sveti Sava (St. Sava) academy staged in collaboration with Zemun secondary schools in the Serbian Army Air Force quarters in Zemun on January 27, 2009. As indicated in Mr. Đorđe Aćimović’s introductory report the program of the Sretenje gathering was envisaged as a spontaneous presentation of club members. Some ten poets recited their poems accompanied by the gentle sound of Toza’s guitar. The opera singer Velizar, better known as Maksa thrilled all present with his outstanding voice. Once the official part of the event was over the music of tambourines filled the air, the table was spread with delicacies donated by the best bakeries of Zemun together with the renowned specialties of the indispensable Mrs. Stojanka Aćimović and the party went on in the spirit of well being. Members of the Zemun Jewish community were honored to be among the guests of the Sretenje social event.

The New Year of Trees – Tubishvat was celebrated within our community in the company of numerous friends. The holiday, although less significant has always presented itself as a splendid chance to remember the good old custom when clerics collected the “One tenth” of farm produce. Today the state has taken this deed upon itself. It is hard to determine whether it is a tenth or less (more), but all the same this fine custom has been misplaced. The only hope we are left with is that the state will restitute us with the public utility holdings taken from us and maybe add a Euro or two for renovation. However, our certainly/uncertain expectations could not hinder us to lay a bountiful spread where special place was given to fruit and almonds, symbols of the New year of trees. Together with her friends, our “adopted” member Stojanka delighted us with her wondrous thin round bread “pogaca”, salt rolls and corn buns, thus sustaining the rule that grain delicacies must also adorn the holiday table.

February 01, 2009 - Scholet in Novi Sad

Members of our community, sixteen of us, attended Scholet – the traditional socializing and first class gourmet party once again proved its creditable regional event status. The presence of members of communities from Osijek , Zagreb , Sarajevo and Slovenia and of course from all Serbian communities is just proof of its repute. The chief “offender” was yet again maestro Ruben who repeatedly surpasses himself in his skill.

January 27, 2009. - Holocaust Remembrance Day
Dr Zarko Obradovic
The international day of Remembrance of the Holocaust was established in 2005 by the UN General Assembly and the date set was the day when Soviet troops liberated the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz in 1945. The central event commemorating the International Day of Remembrance of Holocaust victims organized by the Ministry of labor and social politics of the Republic of Serbia was held on January 27, 2009 in Belgrade beside the Memorial to Second World War Genocide Victims imprisoned in the Staro Sajmiste death camp. The wreath bequeathed by the Federation of Jewish Communities of Serbia was laid by the Presidents of Jewish Communities of Subotica, Beograd and Zemun, Messrs. Robert Sabadoš, Jovan Elazar and Nenad Fogel and also honored by employed secretaries of the Federation Ms. Danijela Danon and Mr. Miroslav Grinvald. Wreaths were also laid by the Minister of education Mr. Žarko Obradović, representatives of the Belgrade Town Hall , the Israeli Ambassador Arthur Kol, and representatives of the Genocide Victims Museum .
In his speech Dr. Žarko Obradović,  education minister stressed Serbia’s contribution to the fight against Fascism and Nazism and that together with Jews and Romas, Serbs were also slaughter in concentration camps.
“We must contest all forms of anti-Semitism and discrimination. Present in Serbia is an on-going process of building a system of values, a system of education and culture directing special attention to antifascist standpoints,” Obradovic said. “We are also proud to say that there is no anti-Semitism in Serbia and that pupils in Serbian schools are educated to observe Holocaust victims. We cannot allow time to obscure Nazi crimes – we must ceaselessly speak of them so that they never happen again,” he continued. Zemun JC President Nenad Fogel informed the Minister of work in progress on the book about the Righteous of Serbia, designed to honor all Serbs who had sheltered and saved Jews during World War II. Through a series of short stories it shall speak of their heroic deeds and shall in a completely novel way portray the Holocaust in Serbia . Renowned historians, Professor Milan Ristovic, PhD and Milan Koljanin, PhD will analytically recount the historical conditions that Jews in Serbia were confronted with in the Second World War. The envisaged concept of the book will doubtlessly have its advantages in the study of the Holocaust in our schools.

Ambassador Arthur Kohl Robert Sabados
Further events commemorating Holocaust Day took place in the state hall of the Belgrade Jewish Community where the Federation of Jewish Communities of Serbia presented a collection of papers headed “Israeli-Serbian expertise exchange of Holocaust studies” originating from the academic gathering held in Jerusalem in 2006.
On the occasion the Israeli Ambassador to Serbia Mr. Arthur Kol assessed that the Collection will be an essential item in the education of future generations. Mr. Jovan Mirkovic, Mr. Jovan Ćulibrk and Prof. Milan Koljanin, PhD. spoke of the significance of the Collection.Following the presentation of the Collection the gathered guests were shown the film “Jews our fellow citizens”.

The rekindling of Hanukka celebration brought many guests, both members of our community and friends, to our communal home. A wished for atmosphere pervaded the premises. The hosts were left standing since there was not enough sitting space for all present. Radiant faces, friendly conversations contributed to the feeling of oneness in this celebration of the holiday of light. Little after the appointed hour of meeting the president of the Community called on all present to give a moments thought to the memory of the glorious Macabeys by lighting candles on the eight branch menorah. Since it was the second day of holiday two candles are lit up. The menorah was placed inside the window so that passers by could see that celebrations had begun. In his short speech David Montijas the president of the JC of Pancevo, wished the best of luck to all and presented us with a painting of Mirjana Lehner-Dragic. The motif of the picture is synagogues.

Finally, he invited all present to come to their celebration in Pancevo on December 28. On behalf of the board of the Belgrade JC, PhD. Marko Zdravkovic wished us all the best in our future enterprises. Mr. Đorđe Aćimović expressed his best wished for the period of holidays on behalf of the Club of native Zemun culture. Stojanka Aćimović enthralled all present with her own “donation” welcoming to both the soul and palate. In the spirit of inter-religious tolerance present for centuries each guest was fed a piece of the traditional celebration cake. The ever agile policemen guarding our house on their regular patrol cordially showed the way to our community celebrations to many guest. Lamb, special doughnuts, Sojanka’s poppy grain strudel and Zaga’s rolls made up for just a fraction of the ensuing festivities.

All joys come with a little sadness! (an old Jewish proverb). Sadness felt for the inadequate attention paid by our State of Serbia to other religious confessions, joy found in the presence of spirit that never seems to live us. Faced with the chronic lack of space for holiday celebrations and other activities we sincerely hope that the outcome of the recently finalized application for restitution of property to religious communities may efficiently solve our problem. We have placed the issue of our synagogue restitution as a priority in the next phase of forthcoming talks with the Directorate for restitution of the Republic of Serbia . The state had confiscated hundreds of square meters of our buildings. It is time to bring remedy to the injustice suffered. In the Parochial home where the seat of the Zemun Jewish Community has found its abode since 1945 we subsist on a mere 40 m/2 of owned space only by the grace of the state. By refusing to solve the problem of protected tenants the State of Serbia prevents us from utilising over 200 m/2 of living space which in name is our property. If in all earnest we are not foreigners in our own homeland then it is up to the state to undertake concrete steps to uphold this principle.
December 12, 2008 . - The unveiling of the restored plaque

In the presence of the Deputy Ambassador of Israel Mr. Yair Frommer, the President of the Zemun Jewish Community Mr. Nenad Fogel and the representative of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia Mr. Miroslav Grinvald, the assistant to the Minister of labour and social politics, Dr Miro Cavaljuga, unveiled the restored memorial plaque in the Jewish cemetery in Ledine. The long- neglected graveyard acknowledged by the Municipality of Belgrade in 1992 as a site of historical importance - a cultural monument, has now been restored with the financial aid of the Republic of Serbia and the Work group for international cooperation in the field of education, remembrance and research of the Holocaust (ITF) in which Serbia holds the status of a country- observer.

December 3rd, 2008 - An Evening of Israeli Film
We are grateful that our film critic, Mr. Nenad Dukić, M.A. made it possible for us to get acquainted with the latest Israeli production presented at the Haifa Film Festival in October this year. An enlightening lecture which also included a perceptive outline of the present-day international film festival scene kept the attention of the audience for almost two hours. The Haifa film festival categorized as a class "B" festival is a presentation of the film production of Mediterranean countries. Serbia was represented by two young authors: Dejan Zečević with the film "The Fourth Man" and Stefan Arsenijević with "Love and Other Crimes". Mr. Dukić sat on two panels of judges; one assessing contemporary Israeli film and the other the TV film production. The film “Seven Minutes in Heaven” made by Omri Givon was awarded first prize in the category of feature films. Mr. Schmuel Berui’s film “Zrubavel” won first prize for the TV film category.
Within his detailed review of films in the mentioned categories Mr. Dukić also recounted a number of interesting details about Israeli cinematography. He particularly emphasized that Israel sets aside significant funds for financing film makers and that it prides itself with a yearly production of 40 films. In comparison not more than ten films are made in Serbia annually. Mr. Dukić further disclosed that oddly enough Živko Nikolić’s film "Lepota poroka" (The Beauty of Vice) holds the all time top film viewer rating in Israel .
Following the lecture Mr. Dukić answered the many questions put to him by a very inquisitive audience.

November 17th, 2008 - Theft of fence from our cemetery

Just when we thought that we've seen and experienced everything on our cemetery an unknown vandal has stolen 20 meters of our fence. Each comment is needless. The case was officially reported to the Zemun Police Station.

November 2008. - From the activities of the Hevra Kadisha

The projected plan of the Hevra Kadisha to repair and restore the broken graveyard headstones was carried out in November. The upper part of the memorial of the former Jewish Community vice president Mr. Herman Weiss, weighing over 1400 kilos was successfully positioned by our tenant, a stone mason and some ten assisting workers. Apart from this memorial, a “victim” of foul weather the mason also repaired a number of vandalized headstones.

The cemetery is periodically exposed to damage from passing storms. One such event resulted in the rupture of a halibun tree crashing into a neighboring horse-chestnut. To provide safe passage for visitors the graveyard caretaker assisted by a team of specialists removed three broken and dried up trees. The memorial site of the graveyard, the resting place of victims murdered in the Staro Sajmiste death camp, remains in its dire state of existence. The inattention of the public funeral institution formally responsible for its maintenance has left it in disrepair for more than one year. We hope that our repeated notifications will finally be heard by those in authority and that this part of the graveyard will also be tended to before winter.

06.11.2008 Tourist Society celebrates the Day of Zemun

The Zemun Tourist Society marked “The Day of Zemun“, November 5, in the Sveti Sava Library. In the presence of many guests and friends Mrs. Mira Nikolić opened the evening of music and poetry. The presentation of Mr. Goran Romčević’s music house Fin&Ek being the focal point of the evening gave the Zemun Jewish Community an opportunity to acquaint the guests with its work. In his short speech Mr. Nenad Fogel, JCZ President called attention to new possibilities of promoting Zemun to tourists. Formally acknowledged as a cultural site of Belgrade the Zemun Cemetery , a rare silent witness of the passing of centuries has doubtless tourist attraction. With the release of its multi-media CD “Life upon Death”- the Zemun Jewish Cemetery, the Community met the conditions required to place the cemetery in the tourist map of the Organization named the European Routes of Jewish Heritage. At the end of the evening the guests received complimentary copies of the CD and a catalogue of the exhibition “We too are Serbia ” illustrating the activities of the Zemun Jewish Community in the past two years.

October 2008 - The Rothschild Foundation with JC Zemun again
The Rothschild Foundation again supported one of the Jewish Community of Zemun's projects. Publishing a book on the Righteous People from Serbia is helped by amount of £10,000.
Many of the Righteous men and women from Serbia risked their lives saving Jews during WW2. Among them was our fellow citizen Martina Levec - Markovic, we will mention on this occasion. Unfortunately she died few years ago. We owe her forever for her humanity. The purpose of the book we are preparing now is to inform the Serbian public about heroic deeds of it's citizens in conditions when Milan Nedic's quisling government formed a special police for the Jews in order to arrest and deport them to the camps of death.

Martina Levec receives the Medal of the Righteous

We hope that with this book we will clarify many dilemmas about the faith of Jews from Serbia and bring them to terrain of historic facts cooperating with distinguished historians Prof. Dr. Milan Ristovic and Dr. Milan Koljanin.

October 21st, 2008 - Sukkot in Osijek

A beautifull autumn day followed a small delegation from the Jewish Community of Zemun on their way to Osijek . A dozen of us went to visit the Jewish Community of Osijek. Their cooperation with the JC Subotica they started a few years ago brought to significant results. Over 270 gusts from Zagreb , Subotica , Zrenjanin, Belgrade , Novi Sad and Zemun, of course, gathered in Osijek to celebrate Sukkot. Our kind hosts made a special occasion for us. First they organized sightseeing of the town (we were late for that) continued with gathering at Tikves excursion site. Fish soup prepared on traditional way in kettles was kosher as proclaimed by Drago Kohn, secretary to the JC Osijek. After a pray spoken by our "orderly rabbi" Tomika Halbror everybody rushed to get a seat in the restaurant. Our old acquaintance Sasha Kabiljo was singing sephardi songs composed mostly by Dalmatian authors.  He made an effort to remind the public on the old days when we all together listened Oliver, Kemal, Tereza and other "sephardi" singers from the region of Ex-Yugoslavia.

October 16th, 2008 - Poetry evening with Vojislav Brkovic

Poet Vojislav Brkovic delighted us again with his new poetry digest promoted again in our community. He led us into this evening explaining etymology of the words of the book title "Limbos of Karagach".  After that president to the JC Zemun Nenad Fogel greeted numerous guests and gave retrospective view on the author.
Between comments from critics Vasa Pavkovic and Ilija Maric, Brkovic recited excerpts from his book in dialogue with Gordana Petkovic. Maestro of recitation Rale Damjanovic exalted the visitors with his spontaneous reading of the poetry from the spectator's rows. At the end the author signed on his book with inscriptions explaining that instead of paying for the book the visitors could contribute the small donation for maintenance of the Jewish Cemetery in Zemun.

September 28th, 2008 - Rosh Hashana 5769

Although we haven't given much of publicity to the celebration a large number of our friends joined our members to celebrate the coming New Year. We decided to mark this event a day earlier so our members could attend the celebration organized in JC Belgrade. Our gathering was announced in a printed edition of  the "Singidunum" -guide through significant events in Belgrade . Thanks to that our dear fellow citizens who wanted to familiarize with Jewish customs came to visit us. We were really flattered because that shows that activities of the JC Zemun are more and more noted in the tourist and cultural offer of the City of Belgrade . Our guests were served with apples and honey, as well as with additional menu of meals and drinks. But, as always, the most memorable was the enjoyable socializing, making new friends and pleasant atmosphere.

September, 21st 2008 - Hinenu, Subotica

Hinenu - the traditional communion that has been successfully organized for the past several years by the Jewish Community of Subotica showed again the significance of such meetings. Over hundred guests from all our communities enjoyed the program arranged by the diligent activists of the Subotica community.

Unforgettable visit to the Subotica ZOO started by visiting two black swans. Judging upon the way they looked at us harshly I thought that they might be our two white swans disguised in black. After feeding them with white bread their look became softer and we could continue sightseeing the beautify arranged ZOO park relaxed. During a short break exceptionally witty director of the ZOO Dr. Mirko Sinkovic addressed us. He illustrated how animals can be similar to humans.

Truly impressed we set out towards the Majkin Salas, meaning the Grandma's Homestead . There our hosts welcomed us with live tambourine orchestra music. In the official part president to the JC Subotica Robert Sabados, president to the Federation Aleksandar Necak and the JOINT director Robert Djerassi addressed us. In their brief expositions they showed us how much they care about needs of our membership. By order of succession those needs started with: soup, turkey and poppy cake at the end. While talking and arranging the future meetings time to say goodbye came quickly. We promised MI-HINEN to be at the same place again next year.

Thanks to kindness of the Embassy of Israel we were in position to display film "Israel Independence - Israel Sights".

He also gifted the respectable professor with all our multimedia editions for his use. Mr. Wagner was very pleased with our attentiveness and promised a new meeting soon.
This visit was very significant for future promotions of our community in the world. It also shows that our deeds are more and more known beyond borders of our country.

Presentation in Ashqelon

Being invited by the Hitachdut Oley Ex Yugoslavia the Jewish Community of Zemun had unique opportunity to be the first Serbian community to present it's activity from the year 2000 till 2008. Our community was represented by it's president Nenad Fogel and it's presidents of the Cultural Section Sladjana Fogel. The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia has gaven support to the project of presentations of the Jewish Community of Zemun in Serbian Jewish communities and in the Hitachdut Oley Ex Yugoslavia. We were invited by the Hitachdut back in 2006, but its realized only this year because the financial aid was received at the end of the last year.

Our presentation consisted of two video exhibitions: "Revitalization of The Jewish Community of Zemun 2000-2006" and "We Too Are Serbia 2006-2008". The first one was displayed in the "Artget" gallery of the Cultural Center of Belgrade and the second had it's premiere right in Jerusalem . Within our presentation program in the "Matnas Baka" cultural and educational center in the elite part of Jerusalem we made a projection of  our multimedia CD "Life Upon Death - The Jewish Cemetery in Zemun". It was realized thanks to donations of the Rotschild foundation and Mrs. Michaela Wagner - Polgar and had it's premiere recently in the Jewish Community of  Zemun. After the projection and a brief introduction of the CD contents visitors had opportunity to see the main activities the Jewish Community of Zemun had for the last eight years. The visitors were impressed with photographs of numerous guests that we had at our premises. David Albahari, Simha Kabiljo, Zarko Korac, Aleksandar Mosic and Zarko Polak are only few to mention who were known to all.

Honorable guests of the evening from the Hitachdut were Zeni Lebl, Ana Somlo-Ninic, Ivan Ninic, Milan and Verica Fogel, Ivica Ceresnjes... they all came that evening to greet us in their city. We were touched with the greeting speech of the Hitachdut president Mr. Josef Zamboki and especially with his conclusion that our presentation was exceptionally valuable for them. That encouraged us in our intentions to keep our regular contacts with dear people from Israel . All the visitors were gifted with a copy of DVD on our exhibitions and a well illustrated catalogue on "Life Upon Death - The Jewish Cemetery in Zemun". On behalf of the Evantov Archive Mrs. Ita Lador was given a complete set of the presentation material.

At the end we would like to thank the organizers of our presentation, Mr. Josef Zamboki and Mrs. Olivera Mirkovic for providing the auditorium in the cultural and educational center.

Our small delegation had yet another presentation, this time in Ashqelon . In the intimate atmosphere of close friends we displayed all that was presented in Jerusalem . Thanks to the piano that we had in the hall Sladjana made the evening with Jewish music unforgettable and very emotional. There was lot of laughter and joy of socializing.

With Snezana Milovanovic, manager to the Youth House

Our permanent donator The World Jewish Relief made us happy again with very useful sports fans articles. Having in mind their wish to share the aid with our milieu we gave up a significant part of it to the Center for Protection of Nurslings, Children and Youth in Belgrade . We expect the next consignment with great impatience and are joyful in advance for the possible surprises. We made a short photo assemblage movie on the distribution of the aid. It will be mailed to the WJR's UK address.

June, 8th 2008 - Promotion of CD "Life upon Death - Jewish Cemetery Zemun"

It was our pleasure to notice that premises of the Jewish Community of Zemun were too small for all the public interested to attend this event. After years of studious work, bilingual multimedia CD project "Life upon Death - Jewish Cemetery Zemun", published in Serbian and Eglish, was finaly completed and promoted.

In his introduction word president to JC Zemun Nenad Fogel greeted the guests and introduced participants of the project. He first paid credits to our donators The Rothschild Foundation, London and Mrs. Michaela Wagner, nee Polgar. He also expressed gratitude to the Tourist Organization of Belgrade for including this project into tourist offer of the City of Belgrade .
Projection of documentary on the cemetery followed. The public watched our production movie with great interest. With new sound system installed it was really impressive.

After the projection the collaborators of the project were speaking. First Danilo Fogel, who translated all the epitaphs written in German (most of them in Gothic). He expressed satisfaction for being a part of the project and stressed that with already published book on the Jewish Community history it completes our efforts to preserve memories on cultural heritage of Zemun Jews. Milan Fogel from Israel spoke about problems of translating epitaphs written in Hebrew. With assistance of Edita Gaon from Israel he successfully completed this difficult task. Technical editor Jugoslav Rakita informed visitors about the contents and navigation through the CD. He stressed that the complete plan of the cemetery is made with all the names of the buried since 1741 till now.

Our special guest Mr. Mladen Herzl, descendant of Theodor Herzl who traveled from Brussels just for this occasion, thanked all the participant with lots of emotions and spoke about his family biography.
President to the Federation of Jewish Communities of Serbia Aleksandar Necak moved us with his compliments to our small community for this great enterprise. He said that "great" communities are not those with great number of members but those with great deeds for the benefit of the whole community. He wished that the Jewish Cemetery in Belgrade should be elaborated the same way. If our community had hundred more Fogels, he commented, it would be possible to elaborate hundreds of negligent Jewish cemeteries existing now in Serbia . It would give more light to centuries of Jewish presence and their contribution to social and economic life in the region.
Mrs. Michaela Wagner, nee Polgar, who continued her family's tradition of benevolence, also expressed her satisfaction with the successfulness of the project and expressed her gratitude to the participants.
Nenad Fogel introduced the collaborators who were attending the event: Dr Milan Koljanin - supplement on Staro Sajmiste Camp, bachelor Dragica Miladinovic - supplement on the site flora, Vojislava Radovanovic, director of the Jewish Historical Museum in Belgrade - supplement on the Jewish Cultural Heritage in Belgrade , as well as Vladimir Lazic and stonemason Milos Garic for arranging the cemetery.

At the end all the visitors were gifted with a copy of the CD and our socializing continued in informal conversation and servings. We were delighted with reactions of the public, their enthusiasm and warm congratulations.

TV Studio B, the official TV station of the City of Belgrade , in their top rated news program broadcasted an extended report on this event, showing excerpts from the film and from the participant's speeches. The TV commentator emphasized our contribution to preserving cultural heritage and enriching tourist offer of the City of Belgrade .

Conductor was Vesna Souc and the main role was performed by brilliant Suzana Suvakovic-Savic.

May, 5th 2008 - Marking Israeli Independence Day

Ambassador Koll and our president Fogel

60th anniversary of proclamation of the Isreali state was marked last night by a reception in Belgrade City Hall . Besides diplomats, public and cultural persons the event was attended by members of Serbian Jewish communities. It was another opportunity for us express our satisfaction with the realization of idea of founding state of Israel with roots originating from Zemun.

Far as 1857 Zemuns's Rabbi Jehouda Ben Shlomo Hay Alkalay sopported the idea of Jews returning to the Holly Land. His teching was accepted by Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) who founded the Zionist movement. His idea was realized in 1948 when modern state of Israel was proclaimed.

April 26th, 2008 - Beyahad promotion in Belgrade

Last night relentless Dr. Vladimir Salamon and his industrious co-operator Mrs. Sonja Samokovlija arranged unforgettable evening in the small auditorium of the JC Belgrade. After projection of Nenad Puhovski's documentary on "Beyehad 2007" events this year's program was presented. After unforgettable Murter, Brac and Hvar last year, for the first time, the happening was organized in Opatija. In the last year's questionnaire, after Beyahad ended, 80% of participants gave the highest evaluation for Opatija facilities and organization, even better that Hvar what was quite surprising for the main organizer, Mr. Salomon. That gave a strong impulse to arrange this year's Beyahad even better.

From interview with Nenad Fogel on Beyahad 2007 (insert)

Innovation that was introduced was "Beyahad for the Young". 40 participants from Ex-Yugoslavia will have their chance to be involved in various workshops during seven days, completely independent from elders, regular participant (who pay the full price). Besides Dr. Salamon's detailed explanations about the program, an exclusive happening was announced for the end of the program: Julian Rachlin concert. The final version of the program will be disclosed after June 20th when selection of projects chosen for the firsts two day's presentations will be revealed.

Magazine "Beyahad 2007" managed to present almost all happenings during gathering in Opatija. Being published as bilingual edition (English) and recognized by the UNESCO and the CEI it is a significant recognition to organizers and participants.
Editor in chief was Blazenka Vrdoljak-Salamon.
Sonja exposed a sad part of the Beyahad arrangement: prices. However 10% increase did not stop Beyahad followers to apply in time. Mikan, who is in charge for the applications, said that there is no more places available. There is only a small chance to apply if somebody cancels his booking. Fortunately prices in restaurants haven't gone up much so the activities out of the arrangement won't be much of expense for the lovers of "Zuja" (Croatian beer) and other beverages.

At the end Misha Herzog, president to JC Belgrade who addressed the visitors at the beginning, thanked the activists of JC Zemun, Nenad Fogel and Jugoslav Rakita for assistance in the documentary presentation.

With his warm valedictory speech Nenad Fogel departed our meritorious community member, devoted husband, good father and sacrificing grandfather. Alksandar Necak, president to the Federation of Jewish Communities of Serbia, expressed his deepest regrets for the loss of laborious activist of the Federation and the Jewish Community of Zemun.
Numerous friends and members of our community lead along Rihard's coffin on his way to the eternal peace.

Let his glory last forever!

February, 24th 2008 - JCZ Regular Annual Assembly
The Regular Annual Assembly of the Jewish Community of Zemun was held on Sunday, February, 24th 2008. The president to JCZ addressed the present members and thanked Mr. Aleksandar Necak, president to the Federation for attending the session. After that the proposal for members of the assembly bodies was exposed. Rihard Eberle was elected to preside and Zoran Jovanoski and Jovan Djordjevic for members of presidium. Ria Beherano was elected to make the session protocol and Mihajlo Farkic i Erna Kovacevic to ratify it.

Presiding Eberle opened the Regular Annual Assembly and exposed the agenda. On behalf of the Supervising Board the first report was read by Nenad Altman. In his concise report he familiarized the members with financial inspection that was recently done. He stressed that the books were kept in good order and that expenses were in accordance with decisions of the JCZ Board and with decisions from the previous assembly.
President to JCZ Nenad Fogel read report on his and the Board's activities for 2007, followed by reports of the other commissions. Sladjana Fogel and Erna Kovacevic read their reports on activities of the Culture and the Women sections. It was concluded that we had very comprehensive program in the previous year but there were complains that the members were not always responsive enough. President to the Social Commission informed the Assembly in detail about the previous year work and exposed her great effort regarding applications for aid to survivors of Holocaust. Proposal for the 2008 budget was explained by Nenad Fogel. He pointed to the noticeable support we were granted by the Federation for realization of our programs. Within this subject he also spoke about projects that will be a part of our activities in 2008.
At the end of the Assembly there was a discussion on standards for membership in Jewish communities. Opinion that all are welcome prevailed. It was related to those who are not members according to Jewish origin but are spouses or children. The president to the Federation joined the discussion and exposed opinion that Jewish origin is required only for the highest functions in communities. He particularly pointed the significance of giyur as a basis of his presidential program. Without it, he said, there is no future for our community.
Many of our members who are not of Jewish origin are very active and they contribute to our communities programs. On the other hand there is a question about responsibility of members toward their community such as fulfilling minimal obligation of paying a symbolic membership fee. Having in mind that some haven't paid the fee for more than three years there a question is rising; do they deserve to be on our membership list? "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country". In our case all you need is to pay the membership fee. Maybe we could adopt our slogan "Pay and it will be paid back to you!"
At the end we would like to thank the Federation president for tributes he paid for our last year's work. He even "criticized" us for being modest in presenting the results we achieved. He told that we were much more active than many communities with more numerous memberships.

Until next Assembly we have to justify confidence that we got.
27.01.2008. - Serbia marks Holocaust Remembrance Day

The central commemoration was held today at the site of the former Nazi camp of Topovske Å upe in Belgrade .
President Boris Tadić took part in the ceremonies at the memorial park, which marks the location that saw around 5,000 of Serbia 's Jews and Romas transported to execution.
"We will never accept the destruction of others simply because they are different, because they belong to another ethnic, religious or political group. We condemn intolerance, we do not accept prejudice and hatred which aims to justify and deepen these differences, to separate us," Tadić said.
Describing the Holocaust, which resulted in the murder of some six million European Jews, as the biggest concentration of evil and martyrdom, the president said the Jewish and other communities in Serbia must always feel equal to the majority population.
"We reject any denial of the Holocaust. Count on us, your fellow citizens and neighbors to remember, to know that this memory serves to recognize a future with a better and more humane world," Tadić said during the ceremonies.
Speaking at the same gathering, the chairman of the Serbian Jewish Community, Aleksandar Nećak, pointed out that the Jewish people will never again allow the Second World War suffering to repeat itself.

" Serbia too paid a huge price in the Second World War. Therefore, neo-Nazism and anti-Semitism do not suit a democratic Serbia . I am calling on Serbians to prevent the strengthening of racism and anti-Semitism," Nećak said. (Click here for the whole speech in Serbian)
Israel 's ambassador to Serbia , Arthur Koll, whose mother is a Holocaust survivor from the Auschwitz death camp, described the results that the Nazi persecution had on his nation as a scar on the face of mankind, that ought to serve to remind how low that mankind can stoop, and how dangerous racism and hatred can be.
"I believe that we are here because we believe in a better world, and because we are aware of the dangers that anti-Semitism and racism bring with them," Koll said.
The commemoration was also attended by UN's representative to Serbia , Lance Clark, who urged parents to bring up their children in a way that will create a sense of responsibility, and enable them to, as adults, build societies that respect human rights.
In 2005,the United Nations decided to declare January 27, the day when Auschwitz was liberated by the Russian Red Army, the Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The Nazi German state killed 1.5 million people in the notorious death camp. Over one million of the victims were Jewish.

December, 10th 2007 – Hanukkah – Holiday of Light in Zemun
Togetherness on which we work on since Palic meeting, is giving results that we are proud of. Celebration of Hanukkah in premises of ex-Synagogue, now a restaurant, was a right occasion for us all to gather and celebrate the new "light" which has glowed up our community in Serbia . The full restaurant (Synagogue) showed how good ideas can be realized  the right way.
President of the JC Zemun Nenad Fogel greeted numerous guests who arrived from Jewish Communities of Subotica, Zrenjanin, Pancevo and Belgrade and friends of our community from Zemun and Belgrade . Afterwards Misa Levi addressed the visitors appropriately speaking about origins of the holiday. After blessing sung by Tomika Halbor, Misa Levi lighted the candles.
While the excellent band was amusing us, many used the opportunity to talk with their friends they can see only on such celebrations. There were serious subjects too, like restitution of properties which was particularly interesting to JC Zemun because of possibility of returning (redemption) of the Synagogue.
We hope that we will be glowed up with this light finally.
November, 27th 2007 - Promotion of book "Ludwig" by David Albahari

We were happy tonight to contribute to solemn atmosphere in Zemun. Our small community arranged a grandiose event transcending the city significance.
Our Zemunian David Albahari, world known writer, promoted his new book "Ludwig" as the world premiere. Honor to organize the first and only promotion in Serbia was entrusted again to Jewish Community in Zemun. Arranging the event in premises of our former Synagogue contributed even more to the grandness. No mater on all circumstances related to after-war fate of the Synagogue we still feel like natural users of this holly place.
The evening was opened by the president of The Jewish Community of Zemun Mr. Nenad Fogel who greeted numerous guests. He thanked the current Synagogue leaseholder Mr. Marko Tasic for kindly providing numerous Jews and friends to gather there again, for the firs time after WW2.

In artistic program that followed pupils of musical school "Kosta Manojlovic", Sanja Radovanovic, guitar i Marko Koncarevic, harmonium performed.
David Albahari read excerpts from his novel which animated host of the evening Mihajlo Pantic, writer and literary critic to introduce this newest literal piece. David spoke about his inspirations and particular form of his novels. In good mood, he set the public in laughing with his observations and comments. Always eloquent Predrag Markovic, editor of "Stubovi Kulture" publishing, contributed to the relaxed atmosphere joining the dialog with the author and the public.
Only 20 copies of the book were not enough to satisfy wish of visitors to have the book with the author's dedication. David promised that we will get the new promotion on the first occasion as soon as his new novel is published, end of July 2008. It will be entitled …. let it stay a "little sweet secret".

Alongside with numerous guests from the city cultural life, representatives of Jewish Communities and the Federation of JC of Serbia the event was attended by numerous photo and TV crews who provided media support for this exceptional event.

More about the author and the book from "Politika" article.

Handshaking

Beginning of realization of project supported by Ministry of Culture of Republic of Serbia entitled Traveling exhibition – Revitalization of Jewish Community of Zemun 2000-2006 begun in our most northern community. The rain that saw us out from Zemun was weakening as we approached Subotica . Our dear hosts probably said some extra prays for good weather to make scheduled walk through their town center more pleasant. Our dear Tomika took over the role of our guide and amused us with his gushing comments related to history of Subotica building constructors. During two-hour sightseeing we had unique opportunity to see the city hall, guided by Svetislav Milankovic, secretary to the City Museum and art historian. We finished sightseeing of Subotica center by visiting Synagogue.
Official program started with greeting words spoken by the president of JC Subotica Robert Sabados. Afterwards president of our community Nenad Fogel gifted our host with a complete of books presenting all editions published by The Jewish Community of Zemun. After "politician handshaking", repeated several times for numerous photographers, the presentation of announced exhibition of revitalization of Jewish Community of Zemun started. Although the exhibition catalogue was distributed to our hosts, Nenad Fogel additionally commented people and events displayed on the photos. We planed to display two more videos (bonus+), but our equipment failed (no sound). We "hardly" had to pass to the central event, tasting goulash (100% kosher), special meal we could not get original Subotica recipe for. Having that in mind we had to agree that we'll have to practice visits more frequently. The tasting was lasting and lasting, only from time to time interrupted with words of praise for excellent hosts. As soon as we thought that everything was over we were served with poppy strudel surrounded with royal cakes, delicious mix of apple and of course poppy fills. At the end of socializing we, members of JC Zemun, asked ourselves: who's promotion was that, ours of Subotica 's? Who is going to cover traveling expenses? We expect answers to this and similar question in Pancevo, our second destination.

October 7th 2007, Novi Sad – Celebration of Himmler's birthaday(!!!)
It's hard to believe that such a title should appear today, after more than 60 years of defeat of Nazism in Europe . Unfortunately this is are true news. "Obraz" and similar organizations have got official permission from Novi Sad Police to celebrate the birthday.
Authorization of such a rally, applied by Novi Sad Nazis, made ordinary people worried. Is the new dictatorship coming, dressed in black shirts with known Nazi insignia from not so distant past, what is it about? I don't think that officers from Novi Sad Police are incapable or not familiar with the law. Obviously someone's opinion was first needed and then reaction was made or, what's also possible, no reaction was made because there is interest to show national minorities where their place in society is. Attempt to implement a false dilemma to minorities that such rallies are product of democracy won't fool anybody.
By the way, have you thought who is next after Nazis finish with the minorities.

Sept 26th/Oct 3rd 2007 – Misa Levi: Lecture on Jewish Calendar, part 1&2

We were very happy to hear again golden voice of Misa Levi from JC Belgrade. This time only we were listening to his speaking voice, i.e. his lecture on Jewish calendar.

President of JC Zemun Nenad Fogel first opened the evening and greeted our guest and visitors. In his very professional and interesting way Misa Levoi talked about Jewish history and their holidays which initiated establishment and development of the calendar. We've got very clear orientation in time thanks to the prepared chronological schemes and very illustrative explanations related to the subject. Our members were very careful listeners. Their questions and comments contributed this evening to last and to learn more from a real expert.

The second part of this lecture was next Wednesday. This time Misa Levi spoke about Jewish holidays Yom Kippur and Sukkot in detail. For this occasion an audio cassette with Kol Nidrei was played. So, we had opportunity to hear an original Jewish prayer recited in the synagogue at the beginning of the evening service on Yom Kippur.

This time again, our visitors were fascinated with Misa's knowledge and his voice. Still they haven't succeeded to make him sing so we could hear his golden voice in some singing form. As a comfort his promise to visit us on Hanukkah remained when there will be a good opportunity for singing.

August 15th, 2007 – Ilan Doron in Serbia again

After 56 years Ilan Doron is in Serbia again, this time with intention to visit house where he was born in Latkovac ethno-village and to visit his father's grave in Jewish Cemetery in Zemun. Kindly responding to request of Sanja Knezevic, who organized visit of Mr. Doron, president of JC Zemun Nenad Fogel received the guest at the entrance to the cemetery and showed him the place where his father was buried. Afterwards, accompanied with numerous TV crews, Mr. Doron went his way to his native house in Latkovac.

Knezevic family is the host of Ilan Doron's family. Sanja Knezevic, manager of Latkovac ethno-village, told us a thrilling story.
"There were several Jewish families in the village during WW2. Among others there was Ladislav Deutch's respectable family. Ladislav and his wife Julija Dresner were working as doctors in Krusevac. In April 1941 when German troops arrived and anti-Semite laws were announced they were fired. They had to leave their apartment and had found a temporary shelter at their friend's place. Finding out that German patrols are seeking for the Jews who were hiding in the area they left the friend's home not to endanger them. They were rambling through the surrounding woods. At that time Julia was pregnant and could not continue with these miles long marches and hiding under in the open and so she decided to go down to Arandjelovac. Delivery of her child has already begun and, being frightened, she decided to hide in some town corner, ready to give a birth there. Fortunately Milenija and Slobodan Knezevic found her and brought her to their home where her son Ilan was born on March 4th 1943. Her hosts offered her accommodation but Julia would not allow them to be andangered, so she left. Her new friends, Knezevic family, did not leave her. They were seeking for new shelters and supplying her with food.
After liberation she found out her husband Ladislav who was very ill. They found jobs in Banat where they were one of the founders of  The Asylum for Orphan Children of War. In 1951 Julia became a widow and she left to Israel with his son Ilan. For many years she was a Kupat Holim doctor in Jerusalem . Her son Ilan got his own family and lives in Haifa . Julia perpetuated her friendship with her saviors, people from Latkovac who were promulgated as Righteous People.
Ljubinka Savkovic, daughter of Milenija and Slobodan Knezevic, is living in Belgrade today. She has daughter Suzana and grandson Aleksa who are living in USA and daughter Ljilja who is living in Belgrade .

July, 29th 2007 - President of The Federation Meets The JCZ Memebers

On invitation of Aleksandar Necak, president of the Federation of Jewish communities of Serbia, our activists and guests from JC Belgrade and the Federation gathered today at JC Zemun premises. Intention was to discuss maters related to our community, relations with the Federation as well as maters of Judaism. President of JC Zemun Nenad Fogel first informed us briefly about the themes that were suggested by the president. After that discussion developed. Most of the time it was debated about the Federation and The Bulletin policy, about the JOINT questionnaire, religious life, restitution and anti-Semitism. Besides our members, Miroslav Grinvald, the Federation secretary and Fredi Mosic from JO Belgrade, took part in the discussion.

At the end A. Necak, president of the Federation gave his final word and his comments to all the topics we mentioned. His explanations of circumstances related to events in the Federation were particularly interesting for us.
We are greeting the Federation president initiative to fulfill a close relation with Jewish communities-founders with such meetings. This not only contributes to good informative purpose and transparency of activities of the Federation bodies, but also to cohesion and sense for the common.

During July major problem occurred at JCZ premises. Concrete sheet of our sanitary nod (toilet) collapsed because of age and bad construction. The sheet begun to decompose and to fall into flat bellow. Thanks to immediate intervention we prevented a big disaster. The toilet was immediately closed for use and thanks to generous and forehand donation we managed to enable it's function in just three days.

July 2007 – WJR Humanitarian Aid

During July there was a distribution of humanitarian aid in The Jewish Community of Zemun. The aid was sent by The World Jewish Relief organization. The Social Commission of JCZ made a priority list for distribution based on regularity of membership fee payments, activity in community social commissions and social status of the members.

All members were informed in time about the distribution and they had opportunity to get in possession of valuable and useful commodities that were sent. One-piece night gowns made most of the joy. We called them “Teletabises” (see photo). Thanking to our donators we express hope that this would not be the last shipment in this drought and hot year.
July, 17th 2007 - Director of JOINT for Ex-Yugoslavian countries visits JCZ

The new director of JOINT - JDC Programs in the countries of the Former Yugoslavia, Mr. Robert Djerassi, accompanied by Mr. Alksandar Necak, president to The Federation of JC visited The Jewish Community of Zemun. Big heat that is going on these days in Zemun (+430C) didn’t stop our most agile activists to welcome the new director, our well known and dear Robert. The meeting that was scheduled on his request was very useful for all. In his brief but comprehensive presentment Mr. Djerassi informed us with JOINT’s standpoints regarding relations with our community. The most emphasized topics were: social activity, community future, religious life, restitution and preparations for the new projects in the field of culture, which all are our priorities as well.
The beginning of discussion was something that was interesting for all the members. Debate about religious needs of the members of Zemun community lasted for almost whole hour.

However all the themes were not elaborated after so much time. Opinions were mostly unanimous regarding consequences of Holocaust and it’s impact on structure of the Jewish Community of Zemun. Numerous mixed marriages as a direct consequence of Holocaust requires careful approach, especially with the youngest. Conclusion was that these topics should be discussed openly, especially in our Federation.

Social activity was always of top interest. It was unanimously concluded that the members should be informed about their guaranteed rights. Work of our Humanitarian Pharmacy was evaluated as archaic and it was asked that method of distribution of medicines should be completely revised. Mr. Djerassi promised that weekend seminars for social activists from our communities would be organized soon.

Restitution, as a survival question for the JCZ and all other communities in Serbia , was evaluated as acute topic. We informed Mr. Djerassi that we have collected all the necessary documentation bat we need an expert assistance for the realization. We were promised that activists of the Task Force, who are in charge for restitution, would provide JCZ with necessary assistance.

At the end we were amused with a short video filmed during distribution of WJR aid.

June 28th - "10 Commandments of God" Projection in JCZ

Our youngest gathered again in JCZ premises to watch a cartoon movie “10 Commandments of God". Madrichim Tamara took care to make the socializing comprehensive and educational. The children were very satisfied because for the first time they had opportunity to watch a movie on a big projection screen in our community. Video beam we purchased recently appeared to be a right decision.

While children enjoyed the film adults enjoyed in refreshments and pleasant conversation in the other room. After projection of the cartoon Nenad Fogel presented the adults a documentary film which is a part of a big multimedia CD project about our cemetery. The whole project is financed by The Rothschild Foundation and Michaela Wagner. Tributes our members paid to the author of this documentary are well deserved.

Members of our community had opportunity to get explanation of their symptoms and treatment advises in an informal conversation with a specialist. Many of them hesitated (including your reporter) to reveal their problems from this delicate field, but open-minded and compliant Dr Markovic with her spontaneous approach quickly established friendly contact with her "patients".

April/May 2007 - ARRANGING OF OUR CEMETERY/ ROTHSCHILD FOUNDATION

Thanks to donation of The Rothschild Foundation ( Europe ), ex Hanadiv Fund, which finances publishing of CD about Jewish Cemetary in Zemun and thanks to donation of our member who wishes to stay anonymous, during April and May we refreshed all monuments entirely. The arranging is related to photographing of all monuments for purposes of the CD presentation. Using specific, non-aggressive method we managed to recover the original glow of the tombstones. Unfortunately there is a lot of monuments with ruined basements. Such damages will be repaired by qualified stone carver due to authority of our Hevra Kaidsha society.
Fence on Cara Dusana St. side is also completed. Decorative cane-fence is mounted over the wire net.

May, 9th 2008 – Eva Ras stars in JC Zemun

It was our honor to have an eminent lady for a guest on this occasion. The first gentleman of our community, president of JOZ Nenad Fogel, first greeted our honorable guest and visitors and read her biography, as presented on Internet pages http://sr.wikipedia.org/sr-el/Ева_Рас. Modest, but multitalented artist, tried to minimize her magnitude, but she hasn't succeed. We were thrilled with her fruitful opus in the field of acting, literature and painting and particularly with her views on life and events. Remembering her childhood with her Jew-grandmother and evoking memories on her private life Eva Ras draw our attention completely. Afterwards winner of "The Golden Ring" award for literature read her short novels from her successful book "Born Dead" that was re-published many times. At the end our members and guests had exceptional opportunity to get in possession of this valuable book with the author's dedication.

At the end the audience used this opportunity to congratulate the author for his work personally. For this convenience the books could have been purchased under special promotional conditions, so many got in possession of this valuable edition. Mr. Danilo Fogel readily dedicated and signed his books to dear guests and friends.

April, 4th 2007 – Seder Evening in JC Zemun

Positive changes on the level of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Serbia contributed a lot to this year's celebration of Pesah in our community. That was sensed in a positive mood and a feeling of  togetherness, credits to our dear guests from Subotica and newly elected president of the Federation Aleksandar Necak with his wife Matilda.

Tomika Halbror, religious master of the Federation and Robert Kovacs, prayer assistant with colleagues from Subotica held a Seder Evening. Complete kosher catering including utensils was brought from Subotica to our premises, especially arranged for this occasion. Members of our Female Section also deserved credits for the full impression. Our members and guests followed the Seder ritual with great attention and dedication. It leaded us into positive mood that kept us long into this night of the full moon.

Greetings to our community on the occasion of Pesah (in Serbian): Minister of Religion Radulovic- President of municip.community of Zemun G. Pop-Lazić - Reisu l ulema of Islamic community H. ef. Jusufspahic

March 2007 - ARRANGING OF OUR CEMETERY

During March significant works were done in arranging of our cemetery organized by Jewish Community of Zemun's Hevra Kadisha. The plan that was prepared for long time finally is realized; we finally constructed concrete paths on the graveyard. Over 100 meters of paths, 1 meter wide now covers almost all routes on our cemetery.

Rainy days won't be problem anymore when going to the cemetery.
Members of Hevra Kadisha agreed that new concrete paths should be built at earliest convenience so everybody could have access to their monuments.
Another important job started; setting fence on street side. Great altitude difference between the graveyard and ground bellow forced us to fence the slope due to security reasons. We will still decide what kind of fence should be made between the rods; wire or plastic net as a warning net for neglectful visitors not to approach too close to the edge of the graveyard.
Besides that a part of the ground wall on the house lot bellow is prepared for construction of concrete supporting wall. This part of the job it taken over by the owner of that part of the yard.
Our tenant who cares about our cemetery is very meritorious for the paths construction. Although that was not his obligation in the deal he completed the job free of charge. The last days of March were in the sign of his first mow of the cemetery.

According to decision of JC Zemun Board dated December 6th 2006 president of our community Nenad Fogel was granted with Megillah of Gratitude on December 16th. He was awarded for all efforts in gathering funds for numerous projects for the benefit of our community, especially for recovery of our chapel at Jewish cemetery in Zemun and for reconstruction of our house in Cara Dusana St. Congratultions for this deserved profession!

March 4th 2007 – Celebration of Purim in JC Zemun

This year's elebration of Jewish holiday Purim was really splendid. Our house was again filled not only with our members but also with visitors and dear guests from Jewish communities of Belgrade and Pancevo who especially contributed to joyful atmosphere. Peca Kon with the guitar and Misa Levi with their fabulous vocals were the most deserving for that. Carried by their music we were singing and dancing all together till late hours. Our hearts were filled with pride because our community contributed once again to keeping of Jewish customs and sense of togetherness as well as spreading of friendly spirit between Jewish communities and their members.

February 6th 2007 – JOZ visits Madlenianum Theater

Celebration of Tubishvat was a nice chance for the most active members of our community to agree on decision to watch a theater performance with always topical theme – aging. Magnificent ambience of Madlenianum Theater hall was the right place for raising our spirits in spite of dreariness of the theme. Radiant faces of our members illustrate that we are right in keeping tradition of JOZ group visits to Belgrade theaters.

Our next visit to a theater is planed after celebration of Purim. So, you who like theater, think about performances that might be interesting for us and expose your suggestions on Purim celebration. Maybe than we agree what will be the next theater piece we would see.
February, 4th 2007 – JC Zemun Assembly session

Regular Annual Assembly of JC Zemun was held on the first day of Tubishvat - the new year of the trees. While we were waiting one hour to pass to fulfill regularity in accordance with our Statute we were discussing about suggested agenda and served ourselves with remaining fruits from the last night's celebration. The agenda was quite usual and was indicating to some major debates. Besides reporting on all regular activities of the community the only theme that agitated participants were the amendments to our Statute.

The session and counting of votes

A dozen of corrective amendments (due to changes in name of our country and the law about religious communities) were not disputable. However some members did not like that the Board tried to reduce their authorities regarding disqualifications of members from our community. and they demanded that amendments should not be considered. The assembly accepted such requests and at the end only article determining that Board members can be disqualified from the community's activities remained. Activity Report was adopted with attempts to dispute management activities of the Youth commission and the Women Section. Main critics were ex-presidents of these commissions (they completely ceased their activities after ending of their mandates). The Assembly concluded that the related managements are not the only responsible for inactivity. The Assembly appealed to all wishing to socialize and devote their spare time for the benefit of the community to take active part in commissions, without any reserves.
By secret voting the Assembly adopted the amendments to the Statute end elected Zoran Jovanoski for the new member of the Board (instead of a member who resigned).

At the end of the Assembly president of JOZ informed members about current activities related to reorganization of the Federation of JCs of Serbia. According to agreement made with the JOINT delegation, the Assembly should elect a managing body who would conduct all activities in the Federation for the several following months.  Finally the JOZ Assembly adopted platform about modes of reorganizations in the Federation and obligated their delegates to represent such standpoints.
February, 3rd 2007 – Celebration of Tubishvat in JC Zemun

Tonight at our community's premises we celebrated Tubishvat - Jewish holiday of trees and fruits. Our members and friends of the community socialized in a pleasant atmosphere kindly provided by the hosts.  In the spirit of tradition we were served with dates, figs, oranges and other traditional fruits and listened interesting stories of our companions.  Particulary interesting conversation was with our guests Miodrag Bogic, respected film director and with charming Desanka Fogel from Israel . They refreshed our socializing with some new stories and horizons.

January 28th 2007 – Operating meeting of the Federation Board with The JOINT

Being active in support of our community during many past years, JDC initiated a meeting with members of the Federation Board in order to assist us in our preparations for the following elections. The meeting was held in the Congress Hall of The Majestic hotel. Radiant faces of participants promised full success of the session. The level of compliance on many key problems was quite surprising. The conclusions that were brought as a result of important exchange of opinions persuaded us that our community is going the right way.
Interlude was used to exchange opinions on advantages of kosher cuisine. We can conclude that all the participants gave their best to voluminously verify advantages of the traditional nutrition. Compliments to the Majestic Hotel's chef!

December, 16th 2006 - Hanukah in JC Zemun

We had great pleasure tonight to see so many people, especially children gathered in our small community. In a warm and intimate atmosphere of our premises representatives of all generations met, as well as our dear and honorable guests. Of course, children were at the first place and a special program was prepared for them. It started with a movie "Eight Crazy Nights" with appropriate Jewish theme. After that president of JC Zemun greeted all visitors and gave us a short retrospection on Hanukah and it's historical frame. Our members Zoran Jovanoski and Rihard Eberle, vice president, took advantage of the festal atmosphere to grant our president with Megillah of Gratitude on behalf of the JC Zemun Board. It was granted for all efforts in gathering funds for numerous projects for the benefit of our community, especially for recovery of our chapel at Jewish cemetery in Zemun and for reconstruction of our house in Cara Dusana St.
Inpatient children finally got their moment when our youth representative Tamara with a little help of her grandpa Rihard, handed gift parcels for them. Children's joy and screams were endless until a solemn religious act of lighting the first candle came. Everybody joined the moment with great attention. Our eminent member Jakov Levi was honored to say appropriate pray and to light the first candle.
In informal part that followed everybody enjoyed in plenitude of drinks and food and in warm and friendly chat in this cold and foggy December night. (J.R.)

December 13th, 2006 – Spiritual concert in Inter-religious Center

Inter-religious Center from Zemun invited us tonight to share happiness and beauty of coming holidays and, as they nicely said in their invitation, to enrich and share our spiritual experiences, reject human vanity, contempt and prejudice… Mrs. Mirjana Ajzenkol, manager of the center greeted visitors and honorable representatives of religious communities. Among them was president of Jewish Community of Zemun, Mr. Nenad Fogel. In the program that followed words about religion were spoken and spiritual music was performed by "Spanac" - Academic Chorus, Associated Choruses of Franciscan Priory and Zemun Parish as well as Chorus of Young from Belgrade Parish of Apostle Saint Peter. At the end of the program final word was given to honorable guest archbishop Stanislav Hocevar who greeted this initiative which contributes a lot to the mutual tolerance in a multi confessional society. In his meeting with the archbishop and with our host president of our community expressed his support to this attitude and wished them happy coming holidays. (JR)
November 2006 – The new setup at The Memorial Museum Jasenovac

Unfortunately we are not informed about the whole concept of The Memorial Museum Jasenovac. Only some fragments of the conception reached us and it is difficult to evaluate whether they're more sad, pitiful or disgraceful.

To get the right picture about the new setup of the memorial area of Jasenovac it is enough just to read an excerpt from critics written by Juliana Kosh of Jewish Community Zagreb. "That is a scandal and disgrace, among 136 lines of text there is not a one that is not insulting for the victims: Jasenovac is named as working camp, than it says that among prisoners there were prostitutes and criminals and that is horrible" (quote from daily "Politika" dated November 29th, 2006).

November 2006 – Children Section of JC Zemun

---

After quite a long time our community was again place where laughter, hails and some tears revolved in socializings organized by our young activist Tamara. Everybody had find something to occupy himself. Younger kids tested their artistic skills while those a bit older were browsing Internet. Accompanied grandmothers indiscreetly monitored the situation just to keep everything in order. They were not hesitating to join in children dances with inevitable music. The hardest thing was to say good bye. The socializing will became regular practice each month, at our pleasure.

November 22nd  2006. - Promotion of CD Monograph "Color Vision"
Tonight we had exceptional pleasure to attend a perfect lecture by Prof. Dr sci. med. Dobrosav Cvetkovic who was introduced by the president of our community Mr. Nenad Fogel. Our honorable guest has managed not only to inform us about the topics but has thrilled us with his non-provoking, but very eloquent and informative exposure. In his concise but very illustrative lecture we learned much about perception of colors, from that one written in our genetic codes via scientifically explained facts to spiritually "processed" by the world's famous artists. The public was especially excited with demonstration of professor's CD program where public could test their ability to rank colors of the spectrum. Of course, our female members were the most successful thanks to the gifted genetic codes, but our artists members weren't far behind. (J.R.)

At the end of this concise but very useful meeting we concluded that we all are a part of this city and it's cultural heritage and that only united we can and we must participate in rebuilding reputation of our country in Europe and in the World.
We took a leave with wishes to meet again on one of JC Zemun celebrations.
April 2006 – Spring maintenance of our cemetery

Our graveyard keeper used first spring days to set himself to big work of removing creepers that covered tenths of monuments. During a few days, with a help of his friends, he managed to clean tombstones that were "invisible" for years.President of our community and owner of neighboring site agreed to replace existing wire fence (totally ruined) with a 50 meters long and more than 2 meters high wall. All related labor will be done by our neighbor.
March, 25th 2006 Purim in Pancevo

After joined celebration of Purim in Zemun, return visit of Jewish Community of Zemun to Pancevo followed. With no false modesty we must praise that we have eaten, drunk and danced more then our hosts did. Of course, that would not be possible if we were not welcomed by full dining tables and excellent music. Particularly interesting was 'tombola' where won prizes could be exchanged. The new style was presented by Nenad and Barbara. We hope that it would be practice on all of our future celebrations.

March 19th 2006 Celebration of Purim in JC Zemun

It was really joyful at "Matica" Fire Brigade House tonight. Our community has set a fire with cheerful music and dance celebrating this cheerful Jewish holiday. Mr. Nenad Fogel, president of JC Zemun, opened the event. Greeting words of our dear gusts followed; Mrs. Lidija Petrovic on behalf of JC Zrenjanin and Mr. David Montijas on behalf of JC Pancevo. Mr. Raka Levi, president of JC Beograd was also present.
Our youth member Miss Natasa Eberle informed our guests about the holiday history and customs. Music assembly "Uspomene" ("Memories") who is mostly responsible for the spread of fire followed. Charity lottery brought even more joy to satisfied guests and our members.

March 2006 – Visit of "Zvezda" society from Stara Pazova

During March members of "Zvezda" society from Stara Pazova paid a visit to Jewish Community of Zemun and exposed a variety of interesting suggestions for our future cooperation. One of main ideas for future cooperation is arranging of Jewish cemetery, which is settled within local cemetery.
As Mr. Zoran Maric said during war years many tombstones were ruined. Their suggestion is to join our forces and to renew ruined monuments, to arrange access paths and rebuilt public faucet that used to be there. Local artist offered his services to design future faucet in form of weeping willow. JC Zemun accepted all the suggestions and promised to take efforts in order to collect funds for reconstruction of our part of the cemetery. Representative of city sanitation department "Cistoca" who are taking care about the graveyard send us regards from the management and invited our representatives to visit them. He also mentioned that they would regularly take care about our cemetery.
February, 13th 2006. - Celebration of Tubishvat in JC Zemun

This year's celebration of Tubishvat was truly spontaneous and relaxed as this holiday should be. Thanks to efforts of community management and our diligent female members ambience of our premises was full of fruit colors. However, numerous cheerful faces of our members and our dear guests gave main note to the happening. Presence of all generations surely contributed to the blessing communal spirit in this icy night. (B.F.)

February 2006 - New anti-Semite graffiti

Just across the street of our community and just tens of yards away from Synagogue someone figured out how to make use of a no-parking sign (written in Swedish) and to send us a message again that we are not welcome in Zemun. For those who don't know "Juden Rauss!" (Jews out!) was a shout often heard during World war 2 in countries where Nazis and Fascists ruled. It resulted in almost complete extermination of Jewish population in Jasenovac concentration camp. We hope that this is just one of isolated incidents in good multinational atmosphere in Zemun.

February 9th 2006 - Social Commission Meeting

Social Commission members: Vera Krotic, Rihard Eberle, Zoran Jovanoski and Slobodan Djordjevic met on February 2nd 2006 and elected Vera Krotic for the new president of the commission. Thanking for votes Vera Krotic stressed that she would expect teamwork in future, where each of the members would fully contribute. The commission agreed to give technical help in writing applications for members who still haven't applied CLAIMS for aid.

February 9th 2006 - First meeting of the newly elected management of Women Commission

On constitutive meeting of Women Commission held on February 2nd 2006 unanimous decision to elect new president of the commission was adopted. The newly elected president Erna Kovacevic and members Vera Mijatovic and Mirjana Eberle agreed new term of commission meetings – Wednesdays at 5.30 p.m.  In cooperation with Commission for Culture a new plan of cultural events will be issued soon. Its contents should enrich our socializing sessions.

February 5th 2006 - Annual Assembly of Jewish Community of Zemun

This year's Regular Annual Assembly of Jewish Community of Zemun was elective. It was held on Sunday, January 5th 2006. Annual reportsand Plan of Activities in 2006 were adopted in active and constructive atmosphere.

All functions in our community are on volunteer basis. See Commissions.

Mr. Davor Salom of Federation of Jewish Communities greeted the Assembly.
January 27th 2006 - Holocoust Remembrance Day

UN adopted resolution designating January 27th as an annual International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. The selected date is the day when in 1945 Auschwitz, the largest and most horrifying Nazi death camp was liberated.
On that occasion City of Belgrade and Federation of Jewish Communities SCG arranged a ceremony of opening a commemorative park in the place where in 1941 was a concentration camp named "Cannon Sheds". Many respectable guests from public and cultural life and relatives of victims attended the opening of the park and commemorative plaque that was placed on the only remaining wall of the former camp.
Prime Minister of Republic of Serbia Dr. Vojislav Kustunica in his emotional speech stressed that all the war crimes, especially of these kind should never be forgotten.
Deputy to the president of Federation of Jewish Communities, Mr. Djuric on behalf of Gipsy Community and Mrs. Hadas Wittenberg, deputy to the Israeli Ambassador to SCG also addressed the visitors. Pray for the victims was later told by our Rabbi Isaac Asiel and by representative of Serbian Ortodox Chuch.
After the speeches Prime Minister Dr. Kosunica opened the commemorative plaque. The commemoration ended with performance of  "Braca Baruh" choir from JC Belgrade.
Mrs. Wittenberg laid a wreath in front of the plaque. Many visitors followed the ceremony by laying flowers.
Members of our community also paid tribute to the victims by their presence.

November 17-th 2005 - Poetry evening with Vojislav Brkovic

One of the most visited events this year, and with reason. The program was really of rich and sublime nature.  After a welcoming word of president of JC Zemun, Mr. Nenad Fogel the public was led into world of art on the most beautiful way – by musical program performed by Vuk Jovanovic i Nenad Uskokovic, students of "Kosta Manojlovic" school of music. Verses sensually spoken by Ms. Ivana Nenadović that followed sounded like continuation of Bach's Allemanda poetics.
Brilliant Rale Damjanovic passionately spoke about Brkic's opus and, on his distinctive and skilled way, managed to make a dialog with the author enabling us to learn more about poet's impulses. The visitors had pleasure to hear more of the poetry narrated by Mr. Brkovic and Ms. Nenadovic alternately and from our outstanding poetry narrator Mr. Damjanovic.
The author gifted our community several copies of his collection "Flower Picker".
Congratulations to organizers for this splendid evening!
(B. Forembacher)

November 17th 2005 - Promotion of book "Jew Women Speaking"

On Faculty of Law in Belgrade there was a promotion of book "Jew Women Speaking" written by Jasa Almuli. It is about Jewish women who survived World War 2. Prof. Ljubomir Tadic, prof. Vladeta Jerotic and Rabbi Isak Asiel were honorable guests of the event. Actor Dejan Cavic narrated extracts from the book in front of full auditorium. Many tears were shed after outstanding narration of our famous artist. This was one of the contributions to the mutual Jewish and human understanding in this region.

November 15th 2005 - "Round Table at Palic"
  <Session <Mr.Yechiel Bar-Chaim and Mr.Robert Djerassi
In a pleasant ambient of Palic Lake all presidents of Jewish communities in Serbia met to discuss necessary organizational changes and modernization of our Federation.
Besides all presidents of communities from Serbia (only Belgrade was represented by vice-president) - many wise gray-haired heads, the summit was honored by presence of JDC delegation: Mr. Yechiel Bar-Chaim, Mr. Robert Djerassi and Mrs. Gabriela Sleppin Sadote.
After skilled introductory speech of our host Mr. Robert Sabados, Mr. Bar-Chaim greeted delegates and wished us successful session. Mr. Djerassi however stayed with us during whole day, actively participating in our work.
For the first time we witnessed exceptionally well conducted meeting with no dialogs or direct conflicts - only stating of attitudes toward items of our agenda.
Mrs. Ljubica Dajc, lawyer from Novi Sad, made an introductory speech about restitution and Mr. Ruben Dajc, also from Novi Sad, reported on suggestion about financing. Mr. Aleksandar Necak from Belgrade spoke about plan for organizational transformations.
Each participant had ten minutes at his disposal  to discuss each subject, including presenting of his attitudes and his suggestions. Almost all took this advantage.
What was not expected happened. Old saying "Two Jews – three opinions" has gone to history. We managed to accept all the conclusions unanimously and they will be presented to the Board for approval.
Our host was not only excellent organizer but also made effort to serve us well during intermissions. We enjoyed the pleasant restaurant atmosphere and an excellent lunch with variety of refreshing drinks.
Smiling faces while saying good-bye undoubtedly meant that we are on the good way to restore our mutual trust and communal spirit.
Nenad Fogel, President of JC Zemun.

November 10th 2005. - Promotion of CD ROM publications byZoran Kosh
Zoran Kosh
Genius presentation of our eminent expert in digital interactive media. Watching video beam public fixedly followed his impressive choice of projects – from educational via linguistic to children's and tourist. Public was especially interested and emotionally involved in his site project "Kladovo Transport" that was done for "Jewish History Museum" in Belgrade.  It's about suffers of Jews in their attempt to evacuate European countries at the beginning of WW2.
We are very grateful to Mr. Kosh for this interesting lecture and for his donations of valuable gifts in form of CD publications from his production.

I
The long expected evening with our writer was opened by Mr. Nenad Fogel, president of Jewish Community of Zemun. In a charming conversation with the author they recollected a given promise that the first promotion of this book would be at JOZ premises. Mr. Gojko Bozovic, editor of publisher "Stubovi kulture" and the novelist informed the public about circumstances of creation of this novel, it's form and contents as well as about it's historic frame. Novel "Leeches" describes in a distinctive way, existence, persecution and survival of Jews in Zemun, or as the author wrote in his dedication to JOZ: "Book about history of hatred".
After that he visitors had a great pleasure to hear some fragments from the novel from the writer himself. Spontaneous and friendly talk with public that followed gave us more interesting details about material that inspired Mr. David Albahari.
During writing of dedications, Mr. Slobodan Djordjevic, in the name of JOZ, gave our esteemed writer a present – sculpture of Rabbi, creation of our Sculpting Section.

October 2005. Arranging of our cemetery

This October Hevra Kadisha has organized a great action of arranging trees at our cemetery. Many of the branches became threat to security of visitors. Besides that there was also danger of damaging valuable monuments. Since we noticed the potential danger in time we ordered our cemetery keeper Pedja to organize skilled cut of the branches and transport out of the site. Three full trucks were loaded with cut branches and taken away. Besides the great effort of engaged workers only half of the job was done. The other part will be arranged as soon as weather conditions will allow. Funds for this action are provided by our member's donations.

Jewish Community of Zemun marked coming of the new year of 5766 with dear guests from Kikinda and “Shalom” orchestra. At the beginning the guests gave us a present; two giant pumpkins, since it is time of “Ludaja Days” in Kikinda. During the night the pumpkin pieces were subject of “auction” . Guest’s bids helped our social fund to fill.
We were very proud to host three actual presidents of our communities and their members: Mr. Raka Levi from Belgradee, Mr. David Montijas from Pancevo and Zdenko Levi and his “Shalom” orchestra from Kikinda. Our guests (there were over forty of them) were singing and dancing together and enjoying delicious specialties from “Petrovic” bakery, variety of refreshing drinks and inevitable apples. In intimate atmosphere we were discussing about past “Beyahad” at Hvar, we were making plans for coming “Days of Jewish Culture” in Kikinda and remembering celebrations of Roch Hashana in Belgrade and Pancevo.
We have received many greeting for the new year from our friends. We would like to emphasize that we also got greeting from Mrs. Gordana Pop-Lazic, president of Municiality of Zemun.

You can see some of the photos at our archive of events holidays page.

In "Sveti Sava" library in Zemun there was a literary evening entitled “Dreams in David Albahari’s Prose”. The author was reading passages from his prose works that were connected to dreams. This event is at the same time announcement and introduction to opening of an exhibition “Siroka staza 005” where members of a fine art club with the same name will on October 11th exhibit their works at Polytechnic Faculty at New Belgrade. September 23rd – October 1st 2005 “Beyachad”, Hvar, Croatia

“Beyachad”, cultural scene with ever-positive echo means socializing, joy of meeting, new friends, exchange of ideas and making of new plans.
This year “Beyachad” seem to be the most attractive till now. Some of the world’s known intellectuals, artists and authors took part in it like: Georg Conrad, Diana Pinto, Fania Oz-Salzberger, David Albahari, Filip David, Predrag Matvejevic, Zarko Puhovski, Predrag Ejdus, Laslo Vegel and many others. That is how the event was officially announced. They were right.
This year “Beyachad” was opened by the president of Republic of Croatia, Mr. Stjepan Mesic.
After an excellent dinner, thanks to presence of president Mesic, days of despair followed.  However what we were denied in our hotel’s menu we got in the rich program.
We could emphasize some of excellent appearances: Predrag Ejdus managed to present some of his great roles in difficult environment (no air condition), round table about post-Yugoslav Jewish Diaspora and an excellent introduction of Zarko Puhovski. Georg Conrad also had an interesting lecture “Judaism in National States”. Diana Pinto was extraordinary open in her lecture “Challenges of Today’s Judaism”.
Introduction of KD “Prosvjeta” also attracted attention of the public.
There were of course some failures, but not due to mistakes of the organizer, like unsuccessful promotion of exceptionally valuable book about ex-Yugoslav immigrants to Israel entitled “In Beloved Country”. Instead of watching promotion of the book we were watching promotion of the main editor Mario Heinel himself. Very sad indeed.
Just to finish with failures we will mention another unsuccessful performance, theatrical adaptation of “Family Novels” by Biljana Srbljenovic.
“Or le Israel bend” from Amsterdam was quite good in keeping good mood during four nights, one after the other.

Round table “Beyachad 2006 – What Could We Do Better?”
We tried to organize it on a crowded catamaran on the way to Split, but without success.  Everybody was sleepy and more interested in napping. After all it was only 8 a.m.The only thing left to us is to quote famous sentence “Next year on Beyachad!”

You can see some of the photos from Beyachad in our Archive pages– Socializing and Visits.
Septembet 20th 2005 Simon Vizental died in Vienna at age of 96. He was often called “Conscious of Holocaust”

September 17th 2005 Socializing party in Subotica

Jewish Community of Subotica, following practice of Novi Sad, Zrenjanin and Belgrade, has announced a “traditional” socializing party in Palic. As Mr. Robert Sabados, president of JOS says, it will become traditional next year. The happening still has no official name, but JOZ will contribute by opening a competition for giving name to the event, with permission of Subotica of course. The first prize would be free lunch – lifetime!!!
Talking about meals we must give credits to the party chef and organizer Mr. Nikola Novkov. If only there were no those extra hundred guests at the lunch. There would be enough of stew for the whole year. This way the stew was gone in a jiffy.
After the tasty dish there was a real fight for delicious cookies made by our charming ladies.
As soon as we finished the sweets there was another pleasant surprise. Zdenko Levi’s “Shalom-ki” orchestra made a good mood with their professional performance.
“King David” theatre from Belgrade finished the party with their program.

Thank you JO Subotica for the great time!

August 2005 – Meeting of two presidents
At the end of August Mr. Raka Levi, president of Jewish Community of Belgrade and Mr. Nenad Fogel, president of Jewish Community of Zemun met in Belgrade. Mrs. Ela Rojnik, vice-president of JOB was also present. The main topic of the meeting was cooperation between two communities and coordination of actions related to celebrations of main religious holidays. As a result it was agreed that Rosh Hashana celebration will be in Belgrade on October 1st and on October 8th it would be in Zemun.  Celebration of Hanukah was also coordinated. It will be held in Zemun on December 25th with act of lighting the first candle and on January 1st it will be marked in Belgrade by lighting the last candle.
Wish was expressed that all the Jewish communities from Serbia should participate in Hanukah celebration in so called “Hanukah Caravan”.
Besides organization of holidays presidents also discussed about further cooperation regarding mutual presence at programs of cultural sections of each community.

July 31st 2005 Visit of Rabbi from “Chabad Lubavitch”
Mr. Slobodan Perera is preparing for the pray
After commemoration to events from 1942, when whole Jewish community from Zemun was tragically driven away to concentration camps, our gusts from “Chabad Lubavitch” organization visited our community in our premises in Dubrovacka St.

On this occasion they demonstrated the usual way of praying practice of religious Jews (ceremony called hanahat t’filin in Hebrew). Our member Mr. Slobodan Perera also spoke the pray according to religious rules.

July 31st 2005 - Commemoration to the victims of Zemun holocaust

Around thirty guests and JOZ members gathered to remember July 27th, day when all Jews from Zemun and surrounding places were driven away in cattle wagons to concentration camps in Jasenovac and Stara Gradiska. Wreaths were laid on the Monument to the victims of Fascism. On behalf of JOZ by Mrs. Vera Krotic and Mr. Rihard Eberle and on behalf of the Federation by Mrs Judita Jovanovic and Mr. Miroslav Grinvald. Mr. Bogdan Simatovic read all the names of the victims. Rabbi Isaac Asiel spoke the pray for the sufferers of Fascist terror. Rabbi Sneur Wilhelm, guest from America greeted the visitors and spoke Caddish.
Our holy duty is to remember the bestialities done to Jews, not only in Zemun, and to pass it to future generations. “Blic” newspaper from August 1st has a report about the event. You can see the paper clip here (scan of an article in Serbian)

July 2005 – The Jewish Cemetery Chapel

Jewish Community of Zemun has pleasure to announce that reconstruction of chapel at our cemetery is completed. In September 2003 the roof of the chapel collapsed. From that moment there was constant danger that the whole building might collapse and accordingly it was not in use till March this year. The funerals were performed in difficult conditions, but we managed to obey religious rules and not to hurt feelings of bereaved family.

We thank all of our members and friends for moral support and especially our donators for generous financial help that enabled this valuable cultural and historic monument to be preserved now from total destruction. The Assembly off our community expressed deep gratitude for their generosity by awarding our newly established “Megillas of Gratitude”. The ceremony of awarding is scheduled for December 25th, as a part of Hanukah celebration.

July 21st 2005 Active socializing
On initiative of our president Mr. Nenad Fogel representatives of all of our commissions met to discuss how to animate our members and possibly foreign associates to take part in creating supplements for our site www.joz.org.yu. Publishing of our presentation was warmly acclaimed as a great progress in informing the members of our community about our work. At the same time public generally is in position to learn more about our activities.

Members of JOZ Supervising Board Mrs. Ana Nadj, Mr. Bogdan Simatovic and Mr. Nenad Altman had a meeting where they elected Mr. Nenad Altman to be the new president of this board until the next Assembly session. July 10th 2005 - Assembly of Federation of Jewish Communities

Regular session of Assembly of Federation of Jewish Communities was performed in working and pleasant atmosphere. Many questions that bothered us were solved and we hope that we will all enjoy the decisions till next assembly session. Small delegation of Jewish Community of Zemun contributed the session.

July 8th 2005 S.E.L.F. program

In mid May Jewish Community of Zemun applied to S.E.L.F. (Strategic European Loan Fund) for a long-term specific credit for the purpose of reconstructing our community building’s attic and for transforming it into business premises. Renting of these premises would increase financial independency of the community. S.E.L.F. initial reaction to the application was positive and accordingly Mr. Atila Eitan Horvat, European Coordinator for Real Estate Management of AJJDC visited Belgrade on July 7th and 8th. He personally inspected the site and collected additional informations necessary for further processing of our application. During his visit he had talks with Mr. Nenad Fogel, president of JOZ and with Dr. Nenad Altman,  who is authorized by the Supervising Board of JOZ to coordinate actions related to JOZ application.

July 8th 2005  Our cemetery – drug addict meeting place
.
Our suspicion that drug addicts, who often visit our cemetery, might be involved in burglary of our house where lives our cemetery guard is strongly supported by finding their “tools” in front of Monument to the Victims of Fascism. We once again emphasize our hope that authorized services will visit the cemetery more often in order to prevent its use as an ideal place for enjoying drugs by local addicts. During one time the main place for preparing drugs was monument to Simon Herzl, grandfather of Theodor Herzl. The monument was damaged, i.e. it was covered with soot.

July 8th 2005 Maintenance of cemetery

Fulfilling a part of our contract with our graveyard guard Pedja he started to reconstruct the first five monuments of people who have no relatives to take care about tombstones. This, with regular moss of the grass, is a great progress in maintenance of old monuments. A lot of them are in a poor condition and require similar interventions.

June 29th 2005 House at cemetery knocked-off
Unknown perpetrators, as said in police jargon, knocked-off our house at cemetery where the graveyard keeper lives. Inspectors of Zemun Police have conducted investigation at the site. There are grounds to suspect that local drug addicts committed the crime. They are regular visitors of our graveyard. Our keeper cleans their traces almost every day. Although we have a good cooperation with Zemun Police we asked them to intensify supervision of our cemetery and of the keeper's house. This spring there were two cases of burglarizing our chapel which is partly a stonecutter's workshop.
These events are actualizing our wish for protection and illumination of the cemetery.  Unfortunately this project is still in municipal offices. Mr. Bojan Stanojevic, mayor at the time and now main city manager, promised that city of Belgrade will take over and realize the project. We are sure that the promise will be fulfilled and that there will be more order and peace at our cemetery.

May 2005 - Lecture about Jewish carpets

Our member Dr Nenad Altman held a very interesting lecture about Jewish carpets. It was quite unusual and not so often topic regarding Jewish inheritance. Scheduled time of 45 minutes for the lecture passed so quickly. A vivid discussion developed afterwards. Public wanted to learn much more then offered. At the end a lot of useful instructions were given how to buy carpets, what to take care about etc. Conclusion was that as more you pay more quality you get, but on our market you can pay a lot for a fake. So, future carpet buyers, don’t hesitate to consult Nenad before shopping.
April 2005 Adaptation of our Synagogue stopped
Thanking to fast action of Bureau for Protection of Cultural Monuments of Belgrade adaptation of our Synagogue by the new renter was stopped. Of course the new renter is innkeeper and this shows that the new municipal administration has no understanding for our appeals to use the building for cultural purposes only. Several times we pointed that Zemun has not enough sites for cultural events and that transformation of our Synagogue to the temple of culture would be the best way for the authorities to pay back all Zemun citizens until the final solution of our request for return of the building to Jewish Community of Zemun is done.
March 2005 Supervision Board in Zemun

The Supervising Board expressed their satisfaction with achieved level of cooperation and promised to send inspection report soon.
