September 17, 2016 - Conference "How to achieve reconciliation and come to mutual understanding"

Click on pic for our photo gallery

The „Dobo Tihamer“ Gallery in  Kanjiža was host to the international conference :“How to achieve reconciliation and come to mutual understanding.” The conference was organized by the Jewish Community in Zemun and OKU CNESA , with the support of OSF and Mr. Josef Žamboki from Izrael. The conference provided an opportunity to exchange standpoints and research work on the devastating effects of World War Two inside the territory of former Yugoslavia and today’s Serbia. Studies were presented by the representatives of the National councils of Hungarians, the Roma and Jews, by historian Dr. Olga Manojlović Pintar, historian from Segedina Dr. Lajos Forro, architect, Mr. Aleksandar Nećak, Mr. Milan Fogel from Israel and historian Dr. Marjan Toš from Slovenia.
The conference opening speech was made by the Vice President of the government of Vojvodina, Mr. Mihaly Nyilas, followed by speeches of the President of Kanjiža Municipality, Mr. Miloš Kravić, OSF Director, Ms. Jadranka Jelinčić and Director of OKU CNESA, Mr. Karolj Šarnjai.
Within the scope of the working part of the conference its participants presented their papers. In conclusion it was agreed that to ease and improve mutual understanding we must jointly work on the education of Serbia’s citizenship. Such “education” requires of historians to accurately present historical events to their people, undistorted by fabrication of facts as required by “day to day politics and political circles”. History cannot be tampered with on a “day to day” basis; however such attempts exit not only in Serbia but in numerous countries throughout Europe. We hope that the addenda of the conference organized by the Jewish Community in Zemun will be a small contribution to guiding accurate data to its “proper place”.

April 22, 2016 - The Jews of Zemun once again in Jasenovac

(Photo gallery of the complex) (Photo gallery of the visitors) (Photo gallery of the laying of wreaths) (Photo gallery of the laying of wreaths)

Upon 74 years from the transport of Zemun Jews to the camps in Jasenovac and Stara Gradiška, a ghost like aura of their faces reappeared at the scene of the crimes of the Ustashi Nazi fabrication, the so called Independent State of Croatia, which regime slaughtered hundreds of thousands of innocent people during World War Two. Inside the area of the Jasenovac remembrance complex the exhibition “Vanished in the Holocaust – Zemun” was put on show. The exhibition managed in its minute way to give voice and better understanding to the reason why the Jewish Conference of Croatia had refused to attend the commemoration organized by the Croatian State Assembly. The gathering that took place today did not send a clear message whether it was a commemoration to the vanished camp prisoners or to their (Ustashi) captors who bestially slaughtered them. We believed that the Croatian political elite would at least show a bare minimum of interest for the camp victims. However, noteworthy importance was given instead to the fact that it had made an appearance, had laid wreaths beside the memorial to the dead, and had thus fulfilled its obligation proscribed by protocol. The one exception among the entire delegation was the Republic of Croatia Minister of Culture, Mr. Zlatko Hasanbegović who approached the exhibited panels and studied the pictures on display and symbolically paid respect to the victims of the Ustashi Nazi criminal regime by bending his head to the people who were slaughtered for one reason only, the fact that they were Jews.

April 17, 2016 - Serbia granted funds for the repair of the roof at the rectory (TEXT IN ENGLISH TO COME SOON)

Mr. Levi spoke of the importance of the exhibition about the synagogues that had disappeared stressing that they were a part of our collective remembrance of the Jews who perished in World War Two. Not only had people been eradicated, but their holy temples too. Mr. Nenad Fogel spoke of the people of Serbia who inspired him and his brother Milan to create an exhibition by which homage was paid to them for their courageous and noble conduct; of the people who have received the Medal of the Righteous presented by the Israeli Museum Yad Vashem. Deputy Ambassador Milner officially opened both exhibitions

In the Jewish Cultural Centre in Doboj the exhibition about the annihilation of Zemun Jews during World War Two, “Vanished in the Holocaust – Zemun” was put on show. The Secretary of the Jewish Community in Doboj, Mr. Dario Atijas commented that the exhibition is presented at a time when different powers within the entire region, as well as in Europe, are giving voice to qualifying the truth of camp Jasenovac and the annihilation of Jews.
In his speech he stressed how the exhibition is primarily intended for younger generations who need to gain knowledge of the people whose everyday lives tragically ended during World War Two.

Fogel stressed that the exhibition on show gives a true picture of the crimes committed in the Independent State of Croatia (ISC) during World War Two.

To observe the end of the six month Presidency of the IHRA, the organization for the Commemoration of Holocaust victims, the Jewish Community in Zemun opened its exhibition “The Righteous from Serbia” in the Hungarian Cultural Centre in Belgrade – Collegium Hungaricum. The Centre Director, Mr. Janos Dezso addressed the gathering in Hungarian and Serbian, stressing the importance of its collaboration with the Jewish Community in Zemun. Next to speak to the audience was the President of the Jewish Community in Zemun, Mr. Nenad Fogel, who together with his brother Milan is coauthor of the displayed exhibition. Among the many distinguished guests the guest of honor at the opening was Zemun Town Hall Mayor, Mr. Dejan Matić. Mr. Nenad Fogel specially stressed the support he hopes to receive from the officials of the Zemun Municipality in the acknowledged restitution of the synagogue. He pointed out how the Jews of Zemun picture the future of the synagogue as a common place of meeting for people of all faiths and cultures. The exhibition “The Righteous from Serbia“ is a sequential extension of the book already published by the Jewish Community in Zemun, portraying the good people who during the Holocaust saved Jews throughout Serbia.
The exhibition was opened by Prof. Dr. Milan Ristović who spoke of the times of war when people were disposed to risk their lives to save those of Jews. One of the Jews saved, Mr. Josef Žamboki, as a symbolic gift to the gathered audience organized a mini concert of classical music. The performance of Belgrade Opera prima donna Jasmina Trumbetaš Petrović received a standing ovation. The young artist from Israel, Ms. Jael Saeg gave a very impressive performance. Accompanied by the choir “Braća Baruh“ next to come on stage was Mrs. Rut Žamboki who showed that in the advanced years of her singing career she has still a lot of musical zest to bestow to her audiences. The gathering was next greeted by amateur singer Sofija Francuski Levi who sang the lullaby, Ojfn Pripečik, in Hungarian. At the end of this part of the program the gathering was again entertained by Mrs. Rut Žamboki who sang the standard Doris Day evergreen Que Sera, Sera in Hungarian.

Mar 9, 2016 - Pančevo Archives host to exhibition “Vanished in the Holocaust“

(Click above for our photo gallery)

The exhibition “Vanished in the Holocaust – Zemun” opened on March 9, in the Historical Archives in Pančevo. The numerous exhibition guests and viewers were welcomed by the Archive’s Director Mr. Milan Jakšić who in his introductory speech commented: “This exhibition represents the apex of Mr. Nenad Fogel’s research work and his effort to wrench from oblivion the faces, eyes, smiles of people who lived in Zemun and whose only sin was that they belonged to the Jewish nation; to a people who were systematically wiped out during World War Two. (...) The Historical Archives in Pančevo salutes the research work undertaken by Mr. Nenad Fogel about the annihilation of Jews in Zemun.
The exhibition is an irreplaceable testament about the Holocaust and a perfect means to achieve a complete depiction of these taunting events by unveiling the number and names of those who perished. This is the reason why the exhibition is so important. It is furthermore important because of today’s tendency to negate the People’s Liberation Movement against the aggressor and simultaneously endorse notorious traitors and Quislings. The crimes that took place are inexplicable and beyond comprehension of civilized and humane moral beliefs; however, they can be written about and persistently and obstinately imparted to new generations as a warning of the impending future.”
Mr. Aleksandar Nećak, member of the executive board of the Museum of Genocide, pointed out that instead of displaying photos of horrendous killing and cruelty, the presented exhibits speak of people living their everyday lives. They celebrate life, not death. However, it is simultaneously a reminder to all of the greatest crime in the twentieth century which was committed on the territory of “civilized Europe”.
Mr. Nećak believes that the crime could only have happened in such a civilized Europe. Foremost, since at the time, and also present today, the concept of “religious anti- Semitism” was extensive. The author of the exhibition Mr. Nenad Fogel expressed his gratitude to the Director of the Archives, Mr. Milan Jakšić, for making it possible for the citizens of Pančevo to view the exhibition about the vanished Jews of Zemun. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue containing a short history of the life and work of Jews in Zemun is intended to wrench from oblivion those who vanished in the Holocaust. A special mission has been left to the few descendants of Jews who managed to survive: to give voice to individuals and in certain cases to entire obliterated families, by portraying them as human beings and not just mere numbers.
Mr. Nenad Fogel emphasized the precious support of the Open Society Foundation Serbia and their donation which made the printing of 5000 copies of the pertaining exhibition catalogue possible. Copies of the catalogue are distributed to all exhibition viewers free of charge. We were further substantially supported by Eng. Josef Žamboki from Israel. In accordance with its moderate means, the City of Belgrade lent its support as well as the JDC from New York.

Feb 25, 2016 - „Vanished“ in Požarevac

(Click above for our photo gallery)

The staging of the exhibition of the Jewish Community in Zemun, “Vanished in the Holocaust - Zemun, Every Picture Tells a Story” resumed its promotion tour in towns in Serbia. Our ninth destination was Požarevac, the hometown of Milena Pavlović Barili and the bard of Yugoslav theatre, Milivoje Živanović. The number of viewers present at the exhibition opening showed how the citizens of Požarevac pay homage to the victims of Serbia who perished during World War Two irrespective of their religious orientation and nationality. The Požarevac Gallery of Modern Arts custodian, Ms. Marina Radosavljević in her welcoming speech to the gathered guests stressed the importance of the message which our exhibition aims to impart. In a word: Crimes of war must not be forgotten.
In his address to the exhibition public Nenad Fogel stressed how the Jewish Community in Zemun has for many years endeavored to keep alive the memory of those of its members who vanished without a trace. Speaking of the annihilation of Jews in the Holocaust, counting up to six million people, he stressed how he endeavored to once again instill life to those great many. The exhibition on show is important in so far as it depicts the victims as living souls in the displayed photos. People caught in a moment of time when they were still living out their dreams and making plans for the future. Unfortunately, for the greater part of them that future was never to be. Instead of bringing their plans into realization they lost their lives, in the hellhole fate that befell them in in the death camp of Jasenovac. Aleksandar Nećak drew attention to the fact how the exhibited photos do not point toward horrific scenes of murder and torture of vanished Jews, but rather to their everyday life, to the simple joys it brought them; furthermore, to their commitment to their daily jobs and business ventures, and last but not least, to their loyalty to the country they lived in.
Upon the opening ceremony the exhibition guests and viewers attended the cocktail party organized on this occasion.

(Click above for our photo gallery)

Within the scope of the 74 th annual commemoration of the murder of Novi Sad citizens, the, so called, Novi Sad Raid which took place from 21 st to 23 rd January 1942, the Jewish Community in Zemun staged its latest exhibition “Vanished in the Holocaust Zemun – Every Picture Tells a Story” inside the premises of the Novi Sad Cultural Center. The exhibition is the story, portrayed in photographs, of the life and industry of Jews from their initial settlement in Zemun back in 1739 up to their tragic annihilation during World War Two. Although the Jews in Zemun were occupied by enemy forces of the so called Independent State of Croatia and those of Novi Sad by Hungarian, they shared one and the same fate. Both were destined to perish as set forth in the notorious Nazi extermination plan. The difference lay only in the dates they met with their deaths, one town preceding the other. The first organized attack on Bačka Jews happened on 4 January, in the Šajkaška region. In the final count the raid in South Bačka left more than 4000 citizens dead. In the Novi Sad Raid over 1200 people were killed. The number of dead Jews was higher than 800 individuals.
Exhibition guests and viewers were welcomed by Mr. Vanja Vučenović, the cultural envoy and member of the Novi Sad Town Hall Council and Mr. Bojan Panaotović, the Director of the Cultural Center in Novi Sad in their opening speeches. Next to speak about the exhibition were its author Mr. Nenad Fogel, the President of the Jewish Community in Zemun, and Mr. Aleksandar Nečak member of the Board of Teraforming and associate in the exhibition project. Ms. Edita Jankov, of the Jewish Community in Novi Sad, was the event’s program presenter. Professor Mr. Mina Momčilović, took part in the exhibition opening artistic program with her performance on the harp.
The exhibition itself is dedicated to the culture of remembrance and paying homage to the dead. At the same time it imparts an important message: We need to teach new generations about historical events that the school system has failed to do and concurrently remind the older of the times that must never be forgotten.
Speaking in the name of the entire Jewish Community in Serbia, Mr. Nenad Fogel thanked the Director of the Novi Sad Cultural Center, Mr. Bojan Panaotović and deputy Director, Ms. Sunčica Marković for the understanding and trust demonstrated in enabling the exhibition of the Jewish Community in Zemun to be placed on view for citizens of Novi Sad.
