December 22, 2019 - First Day of Hanukkah

Hanukkah is celebrated in memory of Judah Maccabi who, after a three-year struggle, defeated the Hellenistic occupiers and liberated the Temple. Chanukah is also known as the Feast of Light, and on December 22 covered by darkness, it disappeared from memory, so it could be called the Feast of Darkness. No one here seems to want to remember those who liberated our country from the Nazis. Let this Hanukkah therefore be dedicated at least in part to our liberators.
The official part of the celebration began with the lighting of the first candle, and the honor went to Nena, our guest from the Jewish Community of Belgrade.
The Hanukkah celebration in Zemun is well-known because its children are most delighted. This year we prepared special gifts for them, and their smiles were more than sufficient indication of how much it meant to them.
The Hanukkah celebration was an opportunity for Mariana Eisenkol to invite attendees to promote the inter-religious calendar, scheduled for December 27 at the St Sava Library in Zemun, beginning at 6 pm.
After the kosher service that came from our Synagogue, the attendees were able to get acquainted with the plan to visit the Nazi camps of Mathauzen and Gussen, located in the territory of Austria, in the next year.

December 11, 2019 - Promotion of the book "Jewish Professors of Medical Faculties in Serbia"

On December 11, our edition "Jewish Professors of Medical Faculties in Serbia" was presented in the in the ceremony room of the Serbian Medical Society. Numerous guests were adresed by reviewer Professor Snezana Veljkovic, PhD, and authors: President of the Serbian Medical Association Academician Radoje Colovic, Former Director of the Publishing Division of the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade Dragan Pantelic and President of the Zemun Jewish Community Nenad Fogel.
After the promotion, a cocktail party was held where guests had the opportunity to speak with the authors as well as to see the accompanying exhibition displays.

October 1, 2019 - First day of October in Zemun: Meeting of women sections on Zemun Quay

Perhaps the last of the beautiful days this fall was used by members of the Zemun and Belgrade Women's Sections to reunite. This time in the beautiful setting of the Stari Šlep and the view of the beautiful blue Danube. True there was no waltz, but there was a variety of fish, served by the friendly staff of the restaurant.
Sasha, Danilo and Nenad also had the opportunity to enjoy themselves. The truth was, they were on the other side of the restaurant, so they couldn't eavesdrop on women's conversations.

The host of the gathering was the president of the Women's Section of the JCZ Mrs. Erna Kovačević.
New gatherings are likely to continue indoors.

September 29, 2019 - New Year in the Synagogue

Regardless of the fact that the President of the Chamber - Judge Gordana Gajic Salzberger overturned the decision of the Restitution Agency to return the synagogue in return for the confiscated real estate to our municipality, members of the Zemun Jewish Municipality also welcomed Seder this evening in their synagogue.

More than a third of our membership was present at the Seder Dinner tonight and once again showed communion.

September 25, 2019 - Socializing of the JCZ and the JCB Women Sections

By accepting the invitation of our Women Section the Women's Section of the Jewish Community of Belgrade confirmed that nothing is difficult. They were headed with their President Mrs. Sonja Levi to come a long way to Zemun. It may not be the first meeting of the two sections, but the first that has been used to make plans for regular meetings, not only on the premises of our municipalities, but also on the attractive premises of our fraternal towns. As a first result, a new get-together is scheduled at the Šlep Restaurant on the quay. Mayors of the municipalities, Danilo Medić and Nenad Fogel, were also invited to this gathering, which they gladly accepted.

September 15, 2019 - European Day of Jewish Culture at Sukat Shalom Synagogue

The Jewish Community Zemun has joined the commemoration of the EDJK with our neighbors in Belgrade. The event was held at their Sukat Shalom synagogue.
The doors of the synagogue were wide open for all the curious. Numerous guests had the opportunity to visit our exhibition on The Righteous from Serbia. Our free exhibition brochures were grabbed in a moment, so we regret that we did not bring more than 60 of these copies.
Our cooperation with the Jewish Municipality of Belgrade continues in many other activities.

July 28, 2019 - Commemoration of the Zemun Jews

Members and friends of our community gathered today in the Jewish Cemetery Zemun to commemorate Zemun Jews victims who were taken to Jasenovac and Stara Gradiska concentration camps in cattle wagons on July 27, 1942.
This year, summer vacations of many members overlapped with this date, so fewer people attended this gathering.
On behalf of our community, members of our Commissions Dragoslav Beherano and Zivko Kovacevic laid a wreath in front of the monument, after which a minute of silence was held in honor of all Zemun Jews perished during the Nazi terror.

June 11, 2019 - Project on Jewish professors of the Faculties of Medicine in Serbia

As part of our research on Jews who were professors of the Faculties of Medicine in Serbia, we have contacted Professor Milan Stanulović in the hope that he will give us some information about Professor Dr. Ivan Piliša. Instead, we received from Professor Stanulović an interesting lecture about Dr. Petar Švarc, a prominent physician from today's Romania, who settled in Novi Sad in 1920.

May 24, 2019 - Cooperation with the VMA-Military Medical Academy Library

In the framework of the project "Jewish professors of medical faculties in Serbia", Project Manager Nenad Fogel addressed the Military Medical Academy's library for assistance in researching their library archives. Already in the first telephone contact with the librarian of the VMA Ljiljana Simić, it was clear that we would get all the necessary help. In addition to those of the most prominent professors, such as Izidor Papo, Ervin Ginzberg, Herbert Kraus and Emanuel Weiss, friendly staff led by Ljiljana Simic pointed to several more professors who were of Jewish origin. The project, which was supported by the Ministry of Culture and Information and the Municipality of Zemun, benefited this cooperation both on the quantity and on the quality of information about their professors. Mrs. Simić also pointed to some of the professors who were lecturers at the Medical Faculty in Belgrade.
In recognition of the respect and wonderful cooperation we have achieved, the Jewish Municipality of Zemun donated a dozen of its editions for the needs of the VMA library. The editions were delivered to the Chief of the Medical Library of the Institute for Scientific Information of the VMA of the University of Defense and to library staff Jasmina Majkić, Ljiljana Simic and Biljana Jokic Mušicki.

May 12, 2019 - The Annual Assembly of the JCZ

The Regular Annual JCZ Assembly was held today.

After the usual election of the Chairman of the Assembly, the recorder and the record verifier were elected.
The regular reports of the Supervisory Board and all the JCZ commissions have been submitted.
During the session, there was also a minute of silence for members of our community who left us in the previous period.
After years spent at the head of the Social Commission, our Vera Krotic asked to release her duties and choose a new president. Svetozar Kon and Olga Skejić were elected as members of the Commission, while Žika Kovačević was elected as the President.

May 7,2019 - Promotion of book "Righteous without medal" and opening of exhibition "Known and unknown Heroes"

In the exhibition space of the Youth Office of the Municipality of Zemun, the promotion of the book "Righteous without medal" was held and the exhibition "Known and Unknown Heroes" was opened. The author of the exhibition and editor of the book, Nenad Fogel, spoke about the great help that the City Municipality of Zemun offered to the Jewish community for years.
He also welcomed all the presidents who were present, and there were many, starting with the Mayor of Zemun, Dejan Matić, the presidents of the Jewish municipalities of Belgrade and Prishtina, Danilo Medić and Dobrica Prlinčević, Presidents of the Federation Igor Ginzberg, to the president of the Culture Club of Zemun Svetozar Ljubinković , the association of Roma Serđ Alijavić, the Club of the admirers of the time Marijana Azjenkol ... All in all, the elite of Zemun and the wider gathered.
The exhibition will last until June 7, 2019. For all future visitors, one copy of the book and the brochure of the exhibition is also provided.

April 27, 2019 – Celebration of Pesach: Time travel

The Jewish municipality of Zemun marked the eight day of Pesach with a suitable celebration on the slopes of Fruska Gora. The winery Stojkovic hosted the celebration.
In a beautiful ethno environment, we recalled the exodus of our ancestors from Egyptian slavery under the leadership of Moses. With traditional servings, bitter herbs, chicken wings, boiled eggs, but also traditional foods of the Serbian people, we were able to taste various wines and homemade brandy that was produced by the winery.

Since the Pesah holiday was as the same as the great Christian holiday of Easter, which is celebrated in the glory of our countryman Jesus, we decided to visit the nearby Beocin Monastery (photo gallery here).

March 21, 2019 - Celebration of Purim in our Synagogue

Our premises have become tight enough to welcome all interested guests, so for the second year in a row, Purim was celebrated in our Synagogue.
It was an opportunity to discus future cooperation with communities from the region. Plans were made for visits to Szeged, Zagreb and Fruska Gora.
