December 14, 2012. - Hannukah, the seventh day!

Alike the whole affair of the creation of Earth being finalized on day seven, the Jewish Community in Zemun was, in turn, steered to celebrate the one holiday with a happy ending: Hanukkah! For some years now the holiday celebrations have been dedicated to our youngest members. If Father Christmas can bring presents to children why cannot “Father” Maccabi? For this reason we decided to give away New Year’s and all other Season’s Holiday’s presents to our children during Hanukkah celebrations. Contrary to those whose faith has stemmed from ours and who choose to celebrate their December holidays for one day only, our children have the privilege to rejoice in eight full days of holiday mirth. This year we let them have the pleasure to enjoy during the eighth day of celebration the gifts we handed out the night before. As always, Mr. Aleksandar Nećak, honorary president of the FJCS, was with us on this occasion and once again explained to the gathering in a very graphic way the origin of the holiday and the message it puts across. After lighting the seven candles, as custom commands we placed the Hannukkiah inside our window, so that its glow could also bestow light to our neighbors and let all know that we are in the midst of celebrations. As an entre to our gourmet spread we partook of Mathilda’s superb corn bread. The feast was resumed when exquisite culinary delicacies arrived from the Zemun Synagogue. For those, thus far not cognizant, we note that an excellent restaurant is still housed within its walls. All that we may well set out to do is take action like the Maccabeans of over 2000 years ago, waiting for an opportunity to “liberate” it and once again light the miracle oil inside out temple. We hope that in this our quest, we shall have the support of our incumbent Serbian President, Mr. Tomislav Nikolić, who on one past occasion promised presidents Nećak and Fogel that the injustice done to the Jewish community shall be set right.

December 13, 2012. - Hannukah, the sixth day!

The Ambassador of Israel to Serbia, H.E. Yossef Levy held the traditional Hanukkah celebration event in his residence. Representatives of Jewish Communities in Serbia, prominent politicians, businessmen from Israel working in Serbia, Belgrade artist and numerous members of the diplomatic corps posted to Belgrade were present at the lighting of candles, six candles. The honor to light one candle each had rabbi Isaac Asiel, Nebojša Stefanović, president of the Serbian Assembly, H.E. Michael Kirby, Ambassador of USA to Serbia, Mr. Strauss, businessman from Israel, Marko Đurić, counselor to the President of Serbia and Predrag Tasovac, director of the Belgrade Philharmonics.

December 8, 2012. - First Day of Hanukkah

In the company of many guests the ceremony of lighting the first Hanukah candle was organized by the Habad Serbia. The company Visual tools from Belgrade organized the holiday celebration. H. E. Yossef Levy, Ambassador of Israel to Belgrade greeted the gathering with a speech appropriate to the occasion stressing the close ties between the two nations, Jews and Serbs. Following the words of greeting of Vladimir Božović and the President of the Federation of JCS, Mr. Ruben Fuks, rabi Yehoshua Kaminetzcky asked H.E. Ambassador Levy, with the assistance of Vladimir Božović, to light the first candle.
After the ceremonious lighting of the candle a concert for Hanukah celebration was performed by the Simha ensemble. At the same time the children organized a party of their own chasing each other round the voluptuous holiday cocktail party called Sushi bar.

A large number of Zemun Jewish Community members were present at the gathering.

November 15, 2012 - The „Judenlager Semiln“ Exhibition opened in National Library

Within the scope of the conference “International academic conference on the role of the collaborators in Serbia during the WWII in the Nazi Holocaust” , the exhibition “The Jewish camp in Zemun- Holocaust and Collaboration in Serbia” was staged. The host to the exhibition and other relevant events was the National Library of Serbia. Opening the exhibition, Ambassador Slađana Prica of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia welcomed all exhibition guests. Ambassador Prica noted how state bodies of Serbia are dedicated to espouse remembrance of Holocaust victims in Serbia. Second to greet the guests was exhibition co-author Dr. Milan Koljanin. In a short introductory speech he spoke to the audience about the theme of the exhibition, summarized in succinct commentaries and graphic pictures, chronicling the history of the German plan to annihilate the Jewish people in Serbia. Last to speak to the guests was project manager and coauthor Nenad Fogel, president of the Jewish Community in Zemun. In his speech he thanked “coauthor of this exhibition, Mr. Milan Fogel for his concept to mark the 70 year period that has passed since the Judenlager Semlin finished its operation, by staging an exhibition; that would primarily through the aspect of its victims – Jews, give acumen to the role of enemy collaborators in Serbia during World War II.” At the end of his speech on behalf of the Jewish Community in Zemun Nenad Fogel presented the Megila of Gratitude to Eng. Josef Žamboki without whose generous help the exhibition could not have been staged. Once the exhibition was opened guests were invited to a concert dedicated to the victims of camp Sajmište. The Institute for contemporary history in Belgrade as co-organizer of the exhibition held a cocktail party for all conference participants, concert artists and exhibition authors.

Breaking news: By the decision of the provisional director of the National Library of Serbia, Mr. Dejan Ristić the exhibition was removed the day after its opening. In order to fulfill the many requests to restage it, so that the general public can also view it the Jewish Community in Zemun shall soon inform which location in Belgrade is content to accommodate it.

September 2, 2012 - EDJC: JCZ in Belgrade

Observing the EDJC, the Jewish Community in Zemun took part in the event organized by the Jewish Community in Belgrade. First to address the public was Ivona Beker of the JCB, followed by Miroslav Tasić, Secretary of State from the ministry of culture of the Republic of Serbia, rabi Isak Asiel, and as ultimate speaker, H.E. Yossef Levy, the ambassador of Israel to Serbia. In the course of the all day program held in the fore garden of the Sukat Shalom Synagogue in Maršala Birjuzova Street, the JCZ presented its publishing production, as well as, its travelling exhibition about the Righteous of Serbia. Numerous visitors were given the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the courageous people of Serbia who during World War Two risked their lives to save their cohabitants of Jewish decent, who, in most cases, were complete strangers to them. During the eight hours in which the exhibition was staged, of the many guests who came to view the exhibition, most were presented with the exhibition’s luxury catalogue. It was quite remarkable to note the large number of young people who showed interest for the exhibition. Furthermore, at any given time during the event there were at least half a dozen people around the stand where we displayed a part of our published works. The catalogues about the activity of JC Zemun, the multimedia CD editions and the books we have published in the last ten year period attracted immense viewer interest. There were also a number of those who, akin to book fairs, furtively availed themselves of a catalogue or two, or CDs. Although we gave away a large amount of material gratis, this specific type of interest, better known as “snatch and decamp”, is in it-self a particular brand of recognition of the quality of our editions.

August 26 – September 2, 2012 - The Bar Mitzvah Beyachad

We were very pleased when a large number of our Community membership registered for this year’s Beyachad event in Pula, Croatia. However, due to certain unfortunate circumstances, only half of those who applied actually set off for Pula. Among other, the death of Danilo Fogel, an eminent member of the community, and our President’s, Nenad Fogel, father was cause for his and his family’s absence from the event.

This year’s Jewish cultural scene was the thirteenth in raw and thus gained as its tag-name, Bar Mitzvah.
The event opened with a gala dinner party in the Histria Hotel located on the Verudela peninsula, some 4 kilometers from Pula. Once dinner was over greeting speeches were made. First to address the guests was Bajahad Director, Dr. Vladimir Šalamon and the mayor of Pula Boris Miletić, who in turn was followed by writer David Albahari. In a buoyant speech Mr. Albahari proclaimed the event open. As a follow up to the speeches a concert was performed. In the ensuing days the entire scheduled Program (see gallery of photos with descriptions) and all announced gatherings took place. For some years now the "Simha Kabiljo", literary award has been presented at Beyachad meetings and this year’s third prize winner was Mr. Milan Fogel, member of our Zemun Jewish Community and our novelist and site reporter.
The program of this year’s gathering was abundant and much diversified both as regards content and the locations where the actual meetings took place. The thirteenth Beyachad exhibited a high level of organization, apart from slight inaccuracies in attendants’ lists and a minor negligence of the scheduled timetable. However, guests were driven in luxury buses to meetings in downtown Pula, and granted a full day trip to visit Fažana-Brioni.

For all of us, who had registered for three star hotel accommodations, the board and lodging was acceptable, but not up to the standard of last year’s Beyachad. The simple fact that the summer heat eased somewhat (since the rooms had no air-conditioning) allowed us some comfort. To be fair we were offered to use some of the facilities of a more expensive hotel (four stars). One got the impression that the difference between successive hotel categories was, actually, a 2-stars variance. So it turned out that event participants with superior hotel accommodation dubbed us “members from the Communist hotel”. To round off this brief insight into event happenings, one must admit that the food was exceptional and varied, and the general impression of all participants and guests was that the event was superior to those held in Opatija.

August 16, 2012 - An Exhibition held in the Zrenjanin Historical Archives and Commemoration of the deportation of Jews from Zrenjanin on August 18, 1941.
Zrenjanin on Line

THE RIGHTEOUS OF SERBIA – A TESTIMONY ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST
The exhibition attracted a large number of visitors; a rarity in itself is for such historical remembrance. Despite the relentless heat – appropriate for the month of August, the exhibition staged from August 16 to 30, 2012 attracted daily a large number of Zrenjanin citizens, as well as visitors from neighboring towns. The exhibition was aided by Eng. Josef Žamboki from Israel and the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia, while its chief organizer was Ljiljana Popov, President of Zrenjanin Jewish Community.

On the eve of the event of the deportation of Zrenjanin Jews that took place on August 19th 1941 and in memory of the tremendous suffering of Jews during World War Two, a commemoration was held this year on the Zrenjanin pedestrian bridge on August 16th. Prayers were said in Hebrew, upon which flowers were piously strewn into the waters of the river. Before the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia wreaths were lowered into the waters by Aleksandar Nećak and Daniela Danon. Flowers were dropped by Ljiljana Popov on behalf of the Jewish Community in Zrenjanin. In front of the City of Zrenjanin honors were paid by Dubravka Bengin Bulovan and Milan Mrkšić. Flowers in tribute to the perished Jews were lowered also by representatives of Jewish Communities from other cities in Serbia.

In honor of the event, the exhibition “The Righteous of Serbia – about Good People” edited by Nenad Fogel, President of the Zemun Jewish Community was opened in the exhibition hall of the Zrenjanin Historical Archives. Speaking about the victims of the Holocaust, during the exhibition opening ceremony, Aleksandar Nećak, the honorary President of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia, pointed out how the Nazi plan of total annihilation of the Jewish people also failed because of the simple kindness of ordinary, goodhearted people. “This exhibition is proof of the fact. But if we wish for the crimes of the Holocaust never to be repeated again, the mere recollections of survivors is not enough. Testimonies to the events that took place are needed, and this exhibition before us is one such testimony,” Nećak said.

On behalf of the Zrenjanin Historical Archives, Holocaust survivors and exhibition visitors who came to view the exhibition and pay their respects to the deceased from all over Serbia and from Hungary were welcomed by Nada Boroš. Lj. B.

June 21, 2012 - Subotica City Museum pays tribute to the Righteous

The Jewish Community in Subotica has put the exhibition “The Righteous of Serbia” on view in the awe-inspiring space of Subotica’s City Museum. The said exhibition has its origin in the book “Righteous among the Nations – Serbia” published by the Jewish Community in Zemun. In addition to the author of the exhibition and the above mentioned book’s editor, Nenad Fogel, two out of the three book authors, historian Prof. Dr. Milan Ristović, and story writer Milan Fogel/Israel, addressed the exhibition’s opening gathering. In his welcoming speech to exhibition guests Museum director, Hulló István, M.A. among other, stressed the importance of perpetual recollection of the times and horrors of the Holocaust. In rounding off the exhibition opening, Subotica exhibition organizer, Robert Sabadoš of the Subotica Jewish Community also revealed the fact that the actual Museum building has, from 1932 been the property of Mrs. Fenyves Erzsébet nee Baruch a Jewess from Subotica and concluded, how no city space could better acknowledge the good people who during World War Two rescued Jewish lives. Citizens of Subotica, the town with the greatest number of Righteous (8, out of the 128 proclaimed Righteous) can view this highly edifying and enlightening exhibition till August 10th. Eng. Josef Zsámbóki of Israel has sponsored Subotica’s exhibition.

June 14 to15, 2012 - Commemorating Jews of Subotica

The anniversary of the deportation of Jews from Subotica to Nazi camps gave rise to two social events which took place within the premises of the Subotica synagogue. Organized by “Radionica sinagoga.rs“ (Workshop Synagogue. rs) and hosted by Laslo Mark Nedelja, the commemoration inside the Synagogue opened on June 14, 2012, exactly at 19:44 hours.  The hour chosen for the synagogue opening was a symbolic reminder of the year when Subotica Jews were herded into cattle wagons and sent of to death camps. Within the selection of the anniversary’s program the exhibition dedicated to the Righteous of Serbia, author Nenad Fogel of the Jewish Community in Zemun, was put on show. The humble artistic piece envisaged for opening day acquainted guests and visitors of the tragic destiny of over 4000 Jews from Subotica and its neighborhood who were deported from their homes to Auschwitz in 1944.

The following day inside the synagogue courtyard in Pavla Papa Street, the 68th anniversary of Subotica Jews deportation was commemorated by a program organized jointly by the Subotica City administration and the Subotica Jewish Community. The event’s presenter, Robert Kovač, announced the performance of Subotica’s National Theater actress Minja Peković and the group „Mécsvirág” from Senta, thus opening the first part of the program dedicated to victims of Shoa – Holocaust. Their performance was followed by speeches delivered by officials: Slavko Parać, President of Subotica City administration, Aleksandar Nećak, honorary President of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia, Dr. Erdélyi Miklós, executive President of the Jewish Community in Hodmezevašarhelj (Hungary) and writer Oto Tolnai, who spoke on behalf of the Jewish Community in Subotica. Rephrasing a section of a highly inspired text written in Hungarian by writer Oto Tolnai on Mr. Blumenberg, Robert Kovač (watch video) delivered the commemoration’s final statement: “Although I personally knew the said Mr. Blumenberg, I had no knowledge of the figurines created by dental instruments out of commonplace stones  Mr. Blumenberg would come across during his walks through Dudova (Mulberry tree) forrest… And stones are placed on Jewish graves so that they remain marked… And as Mr. Tolnai notes, fashioned by dentist drills those stones become double-headed figurines - human and animal - ; in one and the same stone, good and bestial brought together in Mr. Blumenberg’s creative collection.” And finally, rounding off his delivery, Mr. Robert Kovač observed how glorious humanity would be if within our midst there only lived people like the Righteous Pal Žamboki, Lujza Milharčić, Bela and Katarina Kudlik, Julijana and Laslo Sagmajster, Ana and Ištvan Maćasović and Klara Baić, who all saved Jewish lives during World War Two. The words of the El mole rahamin prayer were delivered by Mr. Aleksandar Čović, and the Kaddish prayer by Mr. Tomislav Halbrohr, President of the Jewish Community in Subotica. This year’s commemoration came to its close with the placing of wreaths in front of the memorial to Jewish victims within the synagogue’s court by representatives of Jewish Communities from Serbia, Hungary and Croatia, the Croatian Consulate, the General Consulate of Hungary in Subotica, the Subotica municipality, North Bačka county representatives, as well as, the city’s SUBNOR branch and of many other institutions and associations.

April 28, 2012 - A dream fulfilled - to Kanjiža with love

Seventy years after his miraculous rescue, Eng. Josef Zsámbóki accomplished his life-long dream. The Center of Education and Culture – CNESA  in Kanjiža was host to: the exhibition „The Righteous of Serbia“, to a  grand concert  To Kanjiža with love“, and  eminent  artists, all draw together in honor of Pal Zsámbóki. To the day, 70 year ago the Righteous among nations, Pal Zsámbóki managed to take Josef and his sister Roza BenAvram out of Belgrade, a city which at the time, assisted by the police force of the Quisling regime of Milan Nedić, was settling its final scores with the Jewish population. Pal took Josef to Kanjiža where he introduced him as his son, while Pal’s sister, Maria Csanadi from Novi Kneževac, took in Rosa, where the girl remained up to the end of the war. Both children managed to survive World War Two. As a token of his gratitude Josef changed his surname to that of his savior.
A very large audience came out to pay their respects to their cohabitant Pal Zsámbóki and be present at the opening of the exhibition. To open the day’s event, exhibition author Nenad Fogel, president of the Jewish Community in Zemun spoke first; he was followed by Prof. Dr. Milan Ristović of the Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy, Dr. Milan Koljanin, of the Institute for Modern History, Dr. Ruben Fuks, president of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia and finally, Eng. Josef Zsámbóki, the originator and donor of this spectacular event. Each visitor received a copy of lush the exhibition catalogue. On behalf of the publisher, the Jewish Community in Zemun,  Nenad Fogel also presented copies of the book “Righteous among the Nations – Serbia”, published both in the Serbian and English language, to the mayor of Kanjiža, Mr. Nyilas Mihaly and  to the director of The Institute of Education and Culture – CNESA , Mr.  Karoly Sarnyai. After looking at the exhibition, guest filled into the town grand hall, right up to the last seat in the advent of the performance of eminent artists. The program was formally opened by Eng. Josef Zsámbóki who ascended the stage and lit up six candles in a menorah to commemorate the six million Jewish Holocaust victims. The concert was opened by Mirko Levy, a long standing solo singer of the Braća Baruh choir. Mr. Levy sang the Synagogue prayer kadish of Louis Lewandowski. It must be noted that the remainder of the evening’s event went to its star performer, Margit Zsámbóki, who despite the late years of her singing career managed, during her performance of the song ‘Hymn to Kanjiža” for which she herself had written the lyrics in Hungarian, to obtain the spontaneous support of the public that clapped in time with the song from beginning to end. The assembled public, well learned to appreciate quality singing, acclaimed the performance of Belgrade Opera Prima Donas Jelena Vlahović and Jasmina Trumbetaš and accompanying piano player Ljubica Grijić, with standing ovations. Maestro Miloš Nikolić, violin player and members of the renowned ensemble Renesans, Žorž Grujić and Veljko Nikolić, alias Papa Nik, were yet another rare gem of this remarkable concert. At the close of the concert Margit Zsámbóki sang a few more Hungarian romance songs backed by the opera divas who sang in Serbian. After the concert a cocktail party with a lavish spread was has held in the adjacent hall for all visitors. To round off the whole event one can only conclude: If you dream your dream long enough it will finally come true, just like did for Eng. Zsámbóki.

April 9, 2012 - Prolonged sound cooperation with Zemun Municipality

When, for the first time, we received financial backing from the Zemun municipality some years ago, we never thought that it would become a continued cooperation. Principally, owing to Zemun Mayor Mr. Branislav Prostran’s consideration, we have been receiving substantial financial support for our work. In the past three year period, thanks to funds received from Zemun municipality we published a catalogue about the operation of the Zemun Jewish Community from 2008 to 2010 titled “Open Hearted” and staged a video exhibition under the same name. We further equipped our grand hall for film screenings and realized an exhibition about the Righteous of Serbia within the scope of European Day of Jewish Culture observance activities. This year Zemun municipality has provided us with funds to, once again, implement a video exhibition and publish a catalogue about our activities for the period 2010 – 2012; it has also made available additional means for maintaining our website. The promotion of the new video exhibition and catalogue is projected for the month of May.

April 6, 2012 - A Second Home for Jews from Zemun

Efforts made by members of the Jewish Community in Zemun to uphold tradition brought the truly ardent disciples of faith, to Subotica. After a day spent in an active tour of Kanjiža, tired out, yet resolved to pay tribute to God and people for the miraculous deliverence from Egypt and slavery we entered the Subotica synagogue. In the company of a large number of members of the Subotica Jewish Community and esteemed guests of Sombor, Zrenjanin, Kikinda and Hungarian Hódmezővásárhely Jewish Communities’ memberships, as well as the Hungarian Ambassador to Serbia, H.E. Oszkár Nikowitz, we attended the traditional religious service for Passover delivered by Robert Kovač. After the service we had a congenial Seder dinner where the Haggadah was read. The reading of the Haggadah founds the basis of Seder. The contents of the book describe events relevant to the holiday, the history of the coming of Jewish tribes to Egypt and their release from slavery and captivity. The sequence of the ritual and order of reading the Haggadah is done in a precisely predetermined manner. Upon Seder dinner and the subsequent pervading atmosphere of holiday celebration new meetings were arranged. The visiting exhibition of the Jewish Community in Zemun, “The Righteous of Serbia – An Exhibition about Good People” “secured” new dates and places for opening.  After premiering on April 28th in Kanjiža, to which opening H.E. Oszkár Nikowitz has been invited, the next exhibition staging will be in May in Hódmezővásárhely, Hungary at the invitation of the President of the Jewish Community, Dr. Erdélyi Miklós. The Zrenjanin Jewish Community has “booked” the exhibition for August 18th.

The hardest moment of the Passover celebration came when it was time to take leave of our kind hosts without whose financial aid the trip from Zemun to Subotica could not have transpired. With the traditional farewell salutation: Next year in Jerusalem, we proclaimed, that next year, we would again be in Subotica!

April 6, 2012 - Final preparations for the Exhibition in Kanjiža

On Good Friday, the team of authors of the exhibition about the Righteous of Serbia, Nenad Fogel and Jugoslav Rakita were guests of Pósa Károly, the manager of the CNESA (Institute of Education and Culture CNESA, Kanjiža). The grand event commemorating Pál Zsámbóki, a Righteous from Kanjiža shall be held on April 28, 2012. The event has been backed by the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia, the above mentioned Culture center and its main promoter and sponsor Eng. Josef Zsámbóki from Israel. Upon exhibition opening guests will have the unique opportunity to listen to a recital with eminent Belgrade performers taking part as well as operetta singer Margit (Rut) Zsámbóki from Israel. With all necessary arrangements and consultations concerning the staging of the exhibition completed, our host Pósa took us and the remaining members of the Zemun Jewish Community delegation on a sightseeing tour of Kanjiža. For refreshments we settled down in a fine restaurant on the river Tisa, from where, our host took us to visit his home. Close contact with ponies and kids that have just found there feet was an extraordinary experience for us Zemunians. It was hard to tear ourselves away from the adorable animals; the sentiment was shared by some when it came to quince brandy, but we had to move on to the day’s main event, the celebration of Passover in the Jewish Community in Subotica.

March 22,2012 - Famous Jews in Serbia in Zemun

Inside the full packed hall of the Jewish Community in Zemun the new edition of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Serbia FAMOUS JEWS IN SERBIA – a biographical lexicon was presented; book presenters were Mr. Aleksandar Nećak before the publisher, book editor Mr. Aleksandar Gaon and member of editorial board Prof. Dr. Milan Ristović.
The book promotion was held on the “newly weds’ day” March 22nd 2012 which in itself is a portent of the thorny path that lies ahead for the subject edition to prove its worth (in girth quite a hefty book already) primarily within the scope of the Jewish Community in Serbia. Namely, within the four months upon its issue (end of November 2011), as imparted by its editor, Aleksandar Gaon, there have been some fifty, written or spoken comments as to its contents. The book that has yet to “find its place (and space)”, and which, furthermore, only a select few had occasion to read in its printed from, being available in its electronic mode on the Federation’s website, has already generated numerous ambiguities of which its presenters spoke of at the premiere presentation in Zemun. Mr. Aleksandar Nećak told the audience that the concept for writing the book was brought forward by Mr. Andreja Preger. He emphasized that in all truth the title Mr. Preger suggested, Jews that have notably contributed to the development of Serbia, had not kept long, and how with its abandonment the primary concept of Jews who should be written about in the book, had been discarded. The operating title “Famous Jews of Serbia”, which the editing board accepted at the onset of book writing opened up possibilities, as well as rationale, for certain personas to find their place within the covers of the book, who in all truth, had done far more for themselves than for Serbia. Professor Ristović spoke of the many challenges the editing board had to face up to and deal with. The board was literally “crammed” with biographies of physicians. He pointed out that the contribution of one country, i.e. county, physician who within its small community was indispensable to the point of being its savior could not compare in portent to physicians working in large university centers who contributing to the development of medical academic education, in general, advanced health protection in Serbia. Fully aware of all the faults and unintentional mistakes of this project, Mr. Aleksandar Gaon invited all well-meaning readers to forward their comments and suggestions for the already announced second, revised edition. In expressing his appreciation of this announcement, the event’s host, Mr. Nenad Fogel could not but comment, how a second, radically abridged edition, would certainly be welcomed.

Following the speeches of the eminent guests the host turned to the audience and asked them to air their views, comments and suggestions. Finally, all present agreed that the book ”Famous Jews in Serbia”, with its comprehensive insight of the extent to which Jews have been loyal citizens of Serbia, is an important step toward in mitigating anti-Semitic outbreaks which erratically materialize in our society.
The book (in Serbian) can be viwed or downloaded from the Federation site. Direct link to the PDF document.

March 8, 2012 - A Purim Celebration Honoring Women

Members of the Jewish Community in Zemun joined the many guests of Chabad Serbia in this year’s Purim celebrations. It was highly satisfying to attend a celebration organized and lead by Rabbi Yehoshua and Miri Kaminetzki. With the traditional reading of the Megilat Esther, masked guests equipped with clappers, pots and pans and various drumming devices generated a terrific racket at each mention of Haman’s name. It being March 8th when the whole world celebrates Women’s Day, Rabbi Kaminetzki took the opportunity to accentuate the contribution and significance of Esther’s role in rescuing Jews from Persia in his welcoming speech. The Ambassador of Israel to Belgrade, Yossef Levy addressing the audience evoked all the adversities the Jewish people had suffered throughout the nation’s history. On the very day when Jews joyfully celebrate their long ago salvation in Persia once again threats are made from the very same region by the new Haman, the current president of Iran.  In introducing the ensemble from Budapest, the “Is… Real Project”, Rabbi Kaminetzki expressed his gratitude to celebration sponsors, Messrs. Aviv Arlon. The music of the loveliest Jewish songs was first and foremost joyfully welcomed by the many children. Under the experienced lead of Rabbi Kaminetzki even some older men joined the hava dancing. The Jewish traditional falafel meal was served at exactly the moment when most needed to restore energy to all, children and elders alike. Naturally the unavoidable “Haman’s ears” were also served together with fruit juice and other refreshing drinks. The fact that everything was complimentary, similar to celebrations organized by the Zemun Jewish Community, is proof more of the community’s spiritual bond with Chabad Serbia.

February 1, 2012 - Tribune on the subject of holidays

Marking the issue of the inter-religion calendar for the year 2012 the Jewish community in Zemun was host to a speaker’s platform on holidays and holiday festivities. The event was opened by the choir “Petaka”, fifth grade student girls who performed two songs of reverent love for God and thy neighbor. The speaker’s mediator was Marijana Ajzenkol, mathematics professor and spiritus muvens of the inter-religion center. Radomir Rakić, Archdeacon and the Pater Vinko Maslać, spoke of the origin and significance of holidays. Archdeacon Rakić delivered an interesting speech on holidays in Judaism. The discourse on holidays observed by the Orthodox congregation was highly inspiring for the assembled guests. Many took an active part in the ensuing discussion, especially when it came to the origin and mode of celebrating the Serbian traditional patron saint’s day. Pater Vinko Maslać spoke of Catholic holidays. He reverted to the fact that by the decision of the Catholic Church some 40 years ago many holidays were graded down to second category and from then on marked in calendars in black ink. Only the four major Catholic calendar holidays have remained in red lettering. As the discourse of speakers and audience came to its close, the honorable president of the Federation of Jewish communities in Serbia, Aleksandar Nećak addressed the audience and among other highlighted the scale of Shabbat celebrations as the most significant holiday for Jews. Since the food for the guests was to follow, Mr. Nećak briefly explained the basic principles of the kosher diet. The spread was entrusted to two former pupils of professor Ajzenkol, presently students of the school for chefs’ study. The host of the platform, Nenad Fogel thanked the many guests for attending the event which, as news reporter Dragan Stojković pointed out, was the only place in Zemun where at this point in time, such a platform could be accommodated and voiced. In accordance with the event’s theme, holidays and their celebration, Nenad Fogel invited all present to join the members of the JC in Zemun in their celebration of the New Year of Trees (Tubishvat) which is to be celebrated on February 8th.

The author of the calendar is Ms. Marijana Ajzenkol, graphic layaout by Sasa Mujic. The issuing of the calendar was supported by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Serbia.

January 31, 2012 - Philharmonics gala event

To commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the renewal of diplomatic relations between Israel and the Republic of Serbia, the Embassy of Israel held a gala event in the building of the Belgrade Philharmonics. Hosting the event, head of the Belgrade philharmonic orchestra, Ivan Tasovac welcomed the assembled guests drawing attention to the close relationship between the Jewish and Serbian people. Special mention was made of the fellowship with the Israeli Philharmonics and its director Zubin Mehta.  Addressing his guests Ambassador of Israel to Belgrade, H.E. Yossef Levy, recollected how diplomatic ties had been severed upon the 1967 Six Day War although true relations had never ceased to exist. The renewal of official affairs came into force in 1992 when Israel opened its embassy in Belgrade. Boris Tadić, President of Serbia spoke next to the audience and stressed once again, as he had done in the days preceding the event, how Serbia, and he personally, will employ all possible measures to maintain and further develop relations between the two countries to the satisfaction of all. He reminded the gathered guests of his promise given at the January 27th ceremony commemorating Holocaust victims that Serbia will undertake every measure to preserve memorials dedicated to the devastation of Jews in Serbia during the Holocaust. Upon his address guests were presented with a video taped message of Israeli President Shimon Peres greetings.
Subsequent to the formal party greetings the ethnic music ensemble Shira u'tfila, led by Stefan Sablić, performed to the gathered guests.
